‘GPT-5 is arriving this summer': Sam Altman reveals OpenAI's roadmap

Sam Altman seems to be giving interviews one after the other. On Thursday, June 19, the CEO of OpenAI appeared on the company's podcast featuring an extended conversation with host Andrew Mayne. In the pilot episode, which lasted for about 40 minutes, Altman laid out a roadmap focused on offering a unified experience with the release of GPT-5, which is slated for this summer. When it comes to GPT-5, OpenAI seems to be working on a solution to unify its array of model offerings. Based on Altman's interaction, the AI powerhouse is working towards fixing the company's confusing product line-up with GPT-5. Reportedly, the latest generation of GPT will be essentially a simplification of ChatGPT's diverse models into one streamlined user interface. Talking about OpenAI's next frontier AI model, Altman said that it will probably arrive this summer. The CEO also admitted that the current state of the model choice is a 'whole mess'. He stated that the goal is to get back to a simple progression (GPT-5, GPT-6) and do away with the complex variants inferring to models, that is, GPT-4, GPT-4o, etc. Altman explained that the future goal is to develop a unified model that can handle everything seamlessly, from instant questions to complex, multi-step tasks using reasoning and agent-like tools such as Deep Research. This would essentially eliminate the need for switching modes within the ChatGPT interface. Altman also said that there is an internal debate going on over the naming strategy for the upcoming model to convey clarity. He even briefly mentioned Elon Musk, and how the SpaceX chief tried using his influence in the government to unfairly compete. Altman said that a shift towards delivering a unified user experience was taking place because AI has evolved from being a bot that gives instant answers. He said that he is surprised to find that for hard problems, users are willing to wait for a 'great answer'. According to him, this insight is driving the development of more thoughtful reasoning models that could perform like a human expert, essentially taking its own time before answering. This is Altman's second podcast interview this week. On the Uncapped podcast that was uploaded to YouTube on June 17, Altman said that Meta offered his employees $100 million bonuses to recruit them as a part of the social media giant's recent efforts to ramp up its AI strategy.

How to generate images with ChatGPT on WhatsApp

You can easily add ChatGPT as a new contact on WhatsApp. — AFP For several months, all WhatsApp users have been able to communicate directly with ChatGPT via a dedicated phone number. It's now also possible to use this hotline to generate images, then share them with contacts. OpenAI has announced that all WhatsApp users can now generate images directly via ChatGPT, whether or not they have an account with the service. Simply add the US phone number 1-800 CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to your WhatsApp contacts to start a conversation directly with the AI service. From then on, a simple prompt, ie, a request written in natural language, can be used to generate an image. Note that it is also possible to send a photo and ask the AI to change it in various ways, such as applying a cartoon style, for example. These AI-generated images can then be easily shared in WhatsApp chats or groups, just like any other photo. This feature, directly integrated into WhatsApp, is based on GPT-4o, a model capable of processing text and images. All WhatsApp users can generate one image per day, free of charge. This quota increases if you link up your ChatGPT account, whether free or paid. For OpenAI, this is another step towards making its AI tools accessible to as many people as possible, the idea being to democratize AI-assisted image generation. In this sense, WhatsApp, with over two billion users worldwide, is a prime channel. But OpenAI is also stepping on the toes of WhatsApp's owner, Meta, which has already integrated its own AI tool into the application. It can answer a multitude of questions, but cannot yet generate images. – AFP Relaxnews

Will AI Replace All Jobs? ‘Godfather Of AI' Geoffrey Hinton Weighs In On Future Of Work

Geoffrey Hinton AI: In today's tech-driven world, artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve and reshape industries across the globe. As a result, concerns about its impact on employment have become increasingly common. Young people preparing for their careers are being advised to take a closer look at job roles that are likely to thrive in an AI-dominated future. Apart from this, one question pops up in my mind: Can AI really replace all jobs? The ever-growing concerns about AI displacing jobs raise important questions about the technology's adaptability. Recently, Geoffrey Hinton, known as the "Godfather of AI," voiced stark warnings about AI—predicting massive job losses, the rise of digital immortality, and issuing a significant cautionary statement regarding the potential for widespread employment displacement among white-collar professionals. AI Cannot Replace All Jobs In a recent interview on the Diary of a CEO podcast, Geoffrey Hinton addressed concerns about AI-driven job losses. He noted that historically, new technologies haven't always caused widespread unemployment. Instead, they often led to the creation of new types of jobs. As an example, he mentioned the introduction of ATMs—rather than eliminating the roles of bank tellers, the machines allowed them to transition into more engaging and meaningful tasks. AI Will Replace Humans In Cognitive Tasks Dickson Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton further explained that AI will replace humans in routine cognitive tasks. While this may not lead to full automation right away, he warned that it will likely result in fewer people doing the same amount of work, supported by AI assistants. Adding further, Geoffrey Hinton said that AI is already better than humans in many areas and believes it is 'vastly superior.' He explained that models like GPT-4o know thousands of times more than most people. What makes AI even more powerful, according to Hinton, is that it can instantly share knowledge almost instantly across clones, something humans cannot do. This, he says, is what makes AI both immortal and fast at learning. The 77-year-old also pointed out that AI is already starting to replace entry-level jobs. However, he mentioned that fields like healthcare, which require a lot of human interaction and expertise, may be better at adapting to AI without losing the human touch. However, the many roles still require human creativity, emotional intelligence, ethical judgment, and complex problem-solving—traits that machines are yet to master. Rather than viewing artificial intelligence as a universal substitute, it should be seen as a tool that complements human capabilities.

OpenAI awarded $200 million US defense contract for the use of its AI models

OpenAI has just launched an initiative called OpenAI For Government starting with a modest new contract. The company was awarded $200 million by the US Department of Defense (DoD) to develop "prototype frontier AI capabilities to address critical national security challenges in both warfighting and enterprise domains," according to the DoD's website. The contract is the DoD's first with OpenAI. It will last a year and take place largely in an area that includes Washington, DC and nearby counties in Maryland and Virginia. The company said its new program will provide federal, state and local governments access to its latest models through ChatGPT Enterprise and ChatGPT Gov, along with custom models for national security on a limited basis. "This contract, with a $200 million ceiling, will bring OpenAI's industry-leading expertise to help the Defense Department identify and prototype how frontier AI can transform its administrative operations, from improving how service members and their families get health care, to streamlining how they look at program and acquisition data, to supporting proactive cyber defense,' the company said. Last last year, OpenAI announced that it was partnering with Palmer Lucky's defense startup Anduril Industries to develop AI for the Pentagon. The companies said they aimed to combine OpenAI's models, including GPT-4o, with Anduril's systems and software to improve the US military's defenses against unpiloted aerial attacks. However, OpenAI and the DoD didn't reference Anduril or drone defense in their announcements today. The contract opens up a new source of revenue for OpenAI. The company recently said that it will increase sales from around $10 billion currently all the way to $125 billion in just four years, without providing many details on how it plans to do that. Currently, OpenAI makes money from ChatGPT for consumers, along with business products and its application programming interface (API). It spends a lot more than it makes, having lost $5 billion in 2024 on around $4 billion in revenue. In January, OpenAI announced the $500 billion Stargate program to develop additional computing power in the US. The company completed a $40 billion financing round that values it currently at over $300 billion. However, critics have argued that that despite burning enormous amounts of cash on cloud infrastructure, it still has no clear path to profitability. Relations are also reportedly tense with the company's close partner Microsoft at the moment.

OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT's image generation on WhatsApp

OpenAI is rolling out ChatGPT's image generation feature on WhatsApp now. The AI chatbot's image generation gained popularity earlier this year after GPT-4o launched updated text-to-image capabilities leading to a viral trend of Ghibli-style images. The feature has been launched globally in all regions and will be free for all users, OpenAI said in a statement. ChatGPT announced an integration into WhatsApp last year in December. Users can text on 1-800-ChatGPT to chat with the bot directly on the platform. ChatGPT will request users to verify their identity and link their free, Pro or Plus accounts. Initially, ChatGPT on WhatsApp was just limited to texts and added image and voice capabilities later in February this year.
