Digital Ministry urges public to trust data protection measures
JOHOR BAHRU: Malaysians need not worry about data breaches as their personal information is protected under the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (Act 709), said Deputy Minister of Digital, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.
He emphasised that the government has taken necessary measures to safeguard personal data and urged the public to trust its commitment to data security.
'Parliament passed Act 709 to ensure users' data is protected. CyberSecurity Malaysia also monitors the system 24/7 to detect and fend off hacking attempts,' he said.
'We must have confidence in the national data security system. Without it, foreign investors may hesitate to invest in Malaysia. With laws like Act 709 in place, we should trust that our data is secure,' he added.
He was speaking at the launch of AIRFEST 2025: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Festival at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in Skudai today.
Recently, the South China Morning Post reported that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had requested telcos to submit mobile call data from January to March.
MCMC clarified that the data collected contained no personal identifiers or any information that could be used to identify individuals.

Investment Scam Syndicate Busted In Puchong, 10 Held
SERDANG, June 23 (Bernama) -- Police have arrested 10 individuals believed to be involved in a foreign currency investment scam that caused losses amounting to RM399,787, in a raid at a premises in Bandar Puteri, Puchong last Friday. Sepang police chief ACP Muhamad Farid Ahmad said the suspects, comprising seven men and three women aged between 21 and 38, were believed to have assumed various roles, including managers, platform developers, customer service agents and administrators handling company documents. He said initial investigations revealed that the syndicate had been operating for the past six months, targeting both local and foreign victims. 'The syndicate allegedly offered lucrative returns on initial investments to gain victims' trust to continue investing through a self-developed app. 'It operated under two unregistered companies, and police are currently investigating another company believed to have been used to facilitate fund transfers from victims,' he told a press conference today. Muhamad Farid said checks on the application revealed a total of 2,597 individuals believed to have fallen victim to the scam, comprising 2,482 Malaysians, 111 Indonesians and one each from India, Mongolia, South Africa and Bhutan. 'During the raid, police seized three computer monitors, two CPUs, six laptops, 14 mobile phones and a Wi-Fi modem, all believed to have been used in the illegal operations, with a total seizure value estimated at RM45,000,' he said. He said none of the suspects had prior criminal records and all tested negative for drugs. 'The suspects were initially remanded for one day and released on police bail, but have since been re-arrested in connection with a report lodged in Taman Melawati,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code and Section 137(1) of the Financial Services Act 2013.

Nurul Izzah puts ministries, police on notice over child sex exploitation
PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar said the child sex offender registry, introduced in 2019, should be made easily accessible to the public. PETALING JAYA : Nurul Izzah Anwar, the PKR deputy president, has put the spotlight on three ministries, the police and the internet regulator following reports of a Facebook group sharing explicit images of schoolchildren. While the authorities had acted swiftly to shut down the group, it was not enough. 'What is urgently needed is a firm, immediate and coordinated response from key agencies,' she said in a statement. Nurul Izzah called for the communications ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to come up with a mechanism to evaluate the effectiveness of the current digital safeguards for children. She also requested the women, family and community development ministry and the police to table a report on current and past cases so that the public could assess the development as well as ensure accountability. Nurul Izzah called for Parliament to be briefed on the effectiveness of the police D11 unit, which handles sexual crime cases, in order to objectively and honestly gauge the department's strengths and weaknesses. She also called for the child sex offender registry, introduced in 2019, to be made easily accessible to the public. 'This is not to shame (the offender), but to protect (the children),' she said, citing the example of the Elipsia network led by Spain against child pornography in Latin America and Europe. Nurul Izzah also urged the education ministry to incorporate online safety elements so that children can identify grooming behaviour and digital threats. According to official data from 2023, child sexual crimes rose by 26.5%, while child pornography cases surged by 139.3%, she said. The 'Group Budak2 Sekolah Rendah' page on Facebook, which is now inaccessible, had over 12,000 members and many explicitly sexual comments and captions on its photos. The images included underage children wearing primary and secondary school uniforms, traditional wear, sports attire, and casual clothing. The issue came to light after rapper Ariz Ramli, better known as Caprice, was notified of the group's existence via an Instagram message. The group was then reported to MCMC as well as the police. Influencer Wee Yun Nee, also known as Mekyun, spoke out about the issue as well after realising that photos from her childhood were circulating on the page.
