Five killed, two missing in Vietnam typhoon floods
HANOI: Typhoon winds and rains that lashed central Vietnam killed five people and left two more missing, according to an official toll, with huge tracts of farmland flooded by the deluge.
Typhoon Wutip made landfall in southern China on Saturday with winds gusting up to 128 kilometres per hour (80 miles per hour) and was downgraded to a tropical storm after swooping up the Gulf of Tonkin on Vietnam's flank.
Vietnam's agriculture ministry said on Saturday evening that three people had been killed in central Quang Tri province, with two more fatalities and two people missing in Quang Binh province.

More than 70,000 hectares (172,000 acres) of cropland were flooded, the ministry said.
Chinese authorities on the southern island of Hainan evacuated thousands of people, closed schools and halted rail services on Friday ahead of the storm's landfall.

Natural disasters are becoming more severe and more frequent as a result of climate change. They claimed 514 lives in Vietnam last year, three times more than in 2023, according to the agriculture ministry.
In September, northern Vietnam was devastated by Typhoon Yagi, which killed 345 people and caused an estimated economic loss of $3.3 billion.

SINGAPORE: Japanese rubber futures traded in a thin range on Monday as investors weighed weakening demand for the tyre-making material in top consumer China against rain in production areas, which sparked supply concerns. Rainfall in key domestic production areas of Hainan and Yunnan has disrupted rubber tapping, said broker Everbright Futures. Tropical storm Wutip slammed into southern China on Friday, pounding coastal regions with gales and heavy rain, the National Meteorological Centre said.

Japanese rubber futures log fourth straight weekly gain on worsening weather
SINGAPORE: Japanese rubber futures ended the week in the green on Friday on worsening weather in top producer Thailand, though gains were capped by the upcoming harvesting season and softer oil prices. The Osaka Exchange (OSE) rubber contract for October delivery fell 1.9 yen, or 0.59%, to close at 320 yen ($2.23) per kg. However, the contract climbed 2.11% for the week. The rubber contract on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for September delivery lost 350 yuan, or 2.35%, to 14,535 yuan ($2,019.03) per metric ton. Thailand's meteorological agency warned farmers of possible crop damage, adding that heavy rains and accumulations may cause flash floods from May 23-27. The current raw material output is temporarily low as May and June mark the transition periods for main production areas to start harvesting, said China International Capital Corp (CICC) Futures. While raw material prices remain stable in the short term, the current supply-side pressure is gradually increasing, said Chinese rubber sales portal Natural Rubber Network.
