Bayern's Kompany cautious of 'dangerous' Club World Cup rivals Boca

Reuters6 hours ago

June 19 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich strolled to a 10-0 win over Auckland City in their Club World Cup opener but there will be no room for complacency when they face Argentina's Boca Juniors in their second Group C match, the German club's coach Vincent Kompany said on Thursday.
Boca came close to winning their opener against Benfica but let a two-goal lead slip away in a 2-2 draw with the Portuguese side, and Kompany said they presented a real threat on the transition.
"We know the quality of the tournament ... every team taking part here is a winning team," Kompany told reporters ahead of Friday's game, with Bayern looking to win their third Club World Cup title.
"Boca are a very dangerous team in the transition game. They believe in their moments. The team spirit is good. We have respect for Boca. But we're looking at ourselves and want to bring our qualities to the game."
Kompany said they were familiar with the Argentine style of play with many of the country's players plying their trade in Europe.
"We know a lot of Argentinian players from the European leagues. It's a football we understand very well," he added. "It might feel a bit like an away game. But we want to be Bayern Munich. We have to show the right emotion."
Kompany was happy to welcome attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala and centre back Dayot Upamecano back into the side after missing over two months with injuries.
Germany's Musiala, who scored 12 goals as Bayern secured their 34th German top-flight title, came off the bench to score a hat-trick against Auckland on Sunday.
"Jamal Musiala and Dayot Upamecano haven't played for a long time. We're very happy that they're back and fit. Integration is an important issue and we have to look at it. Otherwise, everyone's 100% fit," Kompany said.

Martin expects Souttar to be fit for Panathinaikos tie

Rangers manager Russell Martin expects John Souttar to be fit for the Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos after the defender had a "minor operation".Souttar reportedly delayed the hernia surgery, external so he could feature for Scotland in their end-of-season friendly double-header. The 28-year-old started the defeat by against Iceland and was an unused substitute in the win over host Panathinaikos in a second-round qualifier on 22-23 July, with the return leg in Greece the following week."John made a decision. He had a bit of minor injury, he wanted to go and play because he's desperate to play for his country which I admire," Martin told Sky Sports."So the plan was here, and everyone was aware of it, to get sorted after that so he has had a minor operation."We expect him to be fit for the Panathinaikos game so it hasn't really affected preparations."Rangers open the league season with a trip to face Motherwell and Martin said: "It's [a win] really important for us, for the supporters, for the club, but also it's not going to define our season."So we have to make sure that we are ready to perform in the European game before that, we have to make sure we're then ready again to go."We have a lot of work to do physically and tactically. The players haven't even been in the building yet, they come back on Monday which I'm really excited about, but now we have something to really work towards and it's going to be great."Motherwell's new boss Jens Berthel Askou is a former Norwich City team-mate of Martin."We've exchanged messages this morning," said Martin."Knowing Jens and how intense he was about his work as a player and how he is as a person, seriously professional, intelligent, he'll have them very well organised and prepared so we have to make sure we are ready for any challenge."

Ruben Amorim growing impatient and wants Man Utd transfers completed urgently

Man Utd's only signing of the summer so far is Matheus Cunha, with boss Ruben Amorim wanting new arrivals on board in time for the summer tour of the US in four weeks' time Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim wants his new signings on board for the club's pre-season tour of the USA in four weeks' time. United have been slow to recruit this summer, with £62.5million winger Matheus Cunha from Wolves their only signing so far, despite the need for a radical overhaul of Amorim's squad. Targets for United include Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike and Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres, who played under Amorim there. ‌ Amorim is impatient for the new signings to be on the plane for United's three-game tour of the States, which sees them face West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton in the Premier Leahue Summer Series. ‌ The United boss sees the tour as the ideal environment in which new signings can fully integrate with the squad, as well as enabling them to adapt to the team's system, so they can hit the ground running when the new season starts. Amorim also wants United to offload players he does not want as quickly as possible, chiefly Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. None feature in Amorim's future plans and must be sold to help raise funds to reinvest in new signings. But United are finding it difficult to attract buyers for their outcasts, primarily because of the high wage demands of the players concerned, as well as their poor form last season, which has left clubs unwilling to meet their market valuations. Rashford wants a move to Barcelona, but there has been little progress on that front, while Napoli have expressed interest in Sancho and Garnacho, but want to pay significantly less that United are demanding. The transfer window opened from June 1 to 10, to allow teams to recruit in time for the Club World Cup, and reopened on Monday, closing on September 1. ‌ Despite United enduring their worst-ever Premier League campaign last season, finishing in 15 th place, Bruno Fernandes has been shortlisted for the PFA Players' Player of the Year award. Fernandes is up against Liverpool duo Mo Salah and Alexis MacAllister, as well as Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice and Chelsea forward Cole Palmer. United skipper Fernandes scored eight goals in 36 league appearances last season and 19 in all competitions. The award will be presented at a ceremony in Manchester on August 19. The last time a United player won the accolade was Wayne Rooney in 2010, with Manchester City and England forward Phil Foden the current holder.

Martin Zubimendi 'touches down in London' ahead of £51m Arsenal move as Mikel Arteta closes in on his first summer signing

Martin Zubimendi has reportedly touched down in London as he edges closer to sealing a summer switch to Arsenal. According to The Athletic, the Real Sociedad midfielder is on the verge of completing his move to the Emirates, with the player set to meet club officials and finalise the remaining formalities. Arsenal have been long-time admirers of the Spain international, who has a £51million release clause in his contract, and Mail Sport revealed earlier this season that the Gunners had moved ahead of their rivals in the race for his signature. Zubimendi is now poised to become Mikel Arteta 's first signing of the summer as the Arsenal boss looks to strengthen his midfield ahead of the new campaign. Reports from Spain earlier this month suggested Real Madrid had made contact with the 26-year-old's camp as they considered an attempt to hijack the Gunners move A product of Real Sociedad's youth system, Zubimendi has gone on to play 236 times for the club, while he has scored ten goals. Zubimendi won the Copa del Rey with Sociedad, while he has enjoyed success on the international stage with Spain, winning Euro 2024 and the 2022-23 edition of the Nations League. He previously played with current Arsenal stars Martin Odegaard and Mikel Merino at Sociedad and is international team-mates with David Raya. Last year Zubimendi turned down the opportunity to join Liverpool but he will now get the chance to test himself in the Premier League. The Spaniard's arrival will come as a relief to the Gunners, with Thomas Partey reportedly set to depart at the end of this month. According to reports, Partey, whose contract expires at the end of June, is not expected to reach an agreement over a new deal. Meanwhile, the Gunners remain keen to bolster their attack as they seek to mount another title challenge next season. Sporting Lisbon striker Victor Gyokeres and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko are among leading strikers Arsenal are keen on.
