Keshav Mittal, 17, from Tapa town in Punjab's Barnala district secured all-India rank (AIR) 7 in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) UG, scoring 680 marks out of a total of 720, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced on Saturday.
This was his first attempt at the medical entrance exam that the NTA conducts every year and he has emerged as the highest scorer from Punjab.
Keshav, who studied at DM Public Senior Secondary School, Karar Wala, Bathinda district, undertook coaching at a private institute in Chandigarh, where he maintained a study routine of eight to nine hours daily.
His father, Dr Prabodh Mittal, is a homeopathic doctor in Tapa, while his mother, Sunita, is a homemaker.
'We were expecting he would be in the first 100, but Keshav has scored beyond our expectations to make it to the top 10. He will study in one of the best institutes in the country. He ensured adequate sleep and limited smartphone use to about 30 minutes a day,' his father said.
Consistency and focus mantra for my success: Sameer
Mohammad Sameer, who wants to study at AIIMS and specialise in neurology said he balanced his NEET preparation with 8–10 hours of intensive study daily.
Apart from NEET, Sameer also secured 98.15 percentile in JEE (Main). He scored 662 marks out of 720.
A student of Delhi Public School, Patiala, Sameer credits his success to staying optimistic and consistently following the guidance of his teachers. 'Family has been my biggest inspiration,' he said. His father, Sabar Mohammad, runs a chemist shop in Malerkotla and his mother, Seema, is a homemaker.
'My goal was always clear. I wanted to study at AIIMS, and that dream kept me going,' he said.
IPL helped me relax during study breaks: Samana's Naveen
A student of Delhi Public School, Patiala, Naveen secured 49th rank scoring 655 marks out of 720.
'My focused and disciplined approach helped me achieve this rank,' Naveen said adding that during his 8-10 hours daily study routine, he focused on 'quality over quantity.' His mother is a government school teacher in Samana, and his father, Dalip Mittal, works in the treasury department.
Naveen shared that cricket was his favourite pastime and watching IPL matches helped him relax during study breaks.
Rajasthan's Mahesh Kumar topped the exam, while Madhya Pradesh's Utkarsh Awadhiya bagged the second rank. More than 12.36 lakh candidates out of 22.09 lakh test takers qualified the exam. The number is down from last year's 13.15 lakh qualifying candidates. However, the number of test takers was also higher last year at over 23.33 lakh. The maximum qualifying candidates are from Uttar Pradesh (over 1.7 lakh), followed by Maharashtra (over 1.25 lakh) and Rajasthan (over 1.19 lakh). The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Undergraduate (NEET-UG) is the largest entrance exam in the country in terms of the number of candidates appearing for the test.
A total of 1,08,000 seats are available for the MBSS course — approximately 56,000 in government hospitals and about 52,000 in private colleges. Admissions to undergraduate courses in dentistry, Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha also utilise NEET results for admission. (WITH INPUTS FROM HTC, PATIALA)

‘Inappropriate to claim man intentionally hid disease': Insurance firm ordered to pay

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission directed an insurance firm backed by a nationalised bank to pay Rs 50 lakh to Savitri Salam, whose husband's insurance claim was initially rejected. The commission found that the insurer failed to conclusively prove concealment of pre-existing diseases by the deceased. Savitri Salam, a resident of Surdongar village in Keshkal tehsil, filed a complaint after her husband's health deteriorated, leading to his demise on 16 June 2021. She sought a claim under a policy taken by her husband, but the insurance firm rejected it, alleging that he provided incorrect information about his pre-existing medical conditions and treatment in the proposal form. The insurance company argued before the district consumer commission that the insured suffered from diabetes and heart disease prior to taking the policy, and this was noted in his medical records from AIIMS, Raipur, as part of his medical history. Based on this, the claim was rejected due to misrepresentation of health information in the proposal form. The District Consumer Commission, Kanker, accepted Savitri Salam's complaint and directed the insurance company to pay the full claim amount within one month. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The insurance company then challenged this order before the Chhattisgarh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission. During the appeal hearing, the bench of Justice Gautam Chourdiya, president, and Pramod Kumar Varma, member, determined that the claim was rejected solely based on a note in the AIIMS, Raipur, medical record. No other medical records were presented to conclusively prove that the insured suffered from diabetes and heart disease before applying for the policy, underwent any prior treatment, or was on continuous medication. The commission observed there was no evidence to suggest that the insured was aware of these conditions when he submitted the proposal. The state commission concluded that it was not appropriate to claim the insured intentionally concealed important facts about his pre-existing diseases in the proposal. The appeal was rejected, and the insurance company has been directed to pay Rs 50 lakh from the life insurance claim, after deducting the Rs 56,621 premium amount already refunded to Savitri Salam by the insurance company. This amount will also include 7% annual simple interest from the date the complaint was filed (27 Dec 2023).

Yoga should guide the world from conflict to cooperation, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that the whole world is going through unrest of some kind or the other and 'Yoga is the pause button' that humanity needs to breathe, balance and to become whole again. He was obviously referring to the growing stress and unrest and conflicts in different parts of the world. The Prime Minister led the celebrations at the 11th International Day of Yoga – 2025 (IDY-2025) on the Beach Road, in Visakhapatnam, on Saturday (June 21, 2025). Addressing the huge gathering, Mr. Modi remarked that in such times, yoga offers a pathway to peace. He appealed to the global community on the occasion of IDY-2025, to let the day mark the beginning for Yoga of humanity, where the inner peace becomes global policy. He called upon every nation to integrate yoga into their lifestyle and public policy. Yoga should guide the world from conflict to cooperation, and from stress to solutions. International Yoga Day LIVE updates The theme of this year's IDY: 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' reflects the truth that the health of every entity on the earth is interconnected. Human well-being depends on the health of the soil that produces our food, the rivers that supply water, and the animals that share our ecosystems and the plants that nourish us. He explained: 'Yoga teaches us that we are not isolated individuals but integral parts of nature. Initially, we learn to care for ourselves but gradually this care expands to our environment, society and the plant. In other words, yoga transitions individuals from me to we. This spirit of 'me to we' encapsulates the spirit of India, which forms the foundation of service, dedication and co-existence.' Highlighting the research efforts on the science of yoga going on across the world, the Prime Minister had a word of praise for the evidence-based research going on at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. Yoga has shown significant impact in the treatment of cardiac and neurological disorders, as well as improving women's health and mental well-being. He said that through the National Ayush Mission, the message of yoga and wellness was being advanced across the country. Digital technology has played a significant role in this regard. Yoga awareness and its popularity was growing all over the country. The global popularity of the 'Heal in India' mantra, highlighting India's emergence as a leading destination for healing, was also growing. The Common Yoga Protocol has been brought out, and the Yoga Certification Board has trained over 6.5 lakh volunteers, and recognised over 130 institutions. The Prime Minister said that a 10-day yoga module was included in medical colleges as part of developing a holistic wellness ecosystem. Trained yoga teachers were being deployed across Ayushman Arogya Mandirs nationwide. Referring growing challenge of obesity across the world, Mr. Modi recalled that he had discussed the issue in the Mann Ki Baat programme, and had launched a challenge to reduced oil consumption by 10% in the daily diet. Reduction of oil usage, avoiding unhealthy diet and practising yoga should be the fitness mantra. He called upon all people to accept the challenge. 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health' should become a global resolution, he concluded. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu commended the people's overwhelming response. He said that 22,122 tribal students set a Guinness World Record by performing mass Surya Namaskar in Vizag yesterday. Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan also spoke.

Pro-poor schemes made healthcare affordable: Shah

Bengaluru: Union home minister Amit Shah on Friday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for its "holistic" approach in addressing health issues faced by the public. He was speaking after inaugurating the Adichunchanagiri University (ACU) Bengaluru campus. "Our leader and PM Modi had said several years ago in Gujarat that poverty's biggest issue is illness, and the cost of treatment; the administration has to provide for the treatment of illness for the poor. I can say with pride today that Modi, when he became the PM , has fulfilled it by providing 60 crore poor with free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh," Shah said. The Modi government has addressed the problem of health with a holistic view, with initiatives like building toilets in about 12 crore houses, through Fit India movement , Yoga Day, Mission Indradanush and Poshan Abhiyaan, Ayushman Bharat , and Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, he added. "In a way, it is being ensured that a citizen doesn't fall ill from the time he/she is in the mother's womb until the person becomes a complete citizen, and in case the person is ill, he takes treatment without paying a higher price for it," he added. Major efforts were taken to increase the number of doctors in the country, Shah said. In 2014, the country had 7 AIIMS, and today there are 23 AIIMS, and the number of medical colleges has increased from 387 to 780. "There were 51,000 MBBS seats then (2014), today it is 1,18,000, and the number of PG seats was 31,000, today it is 74,000.," he added.
