Baghdad Airport Development progresses with Public-Private Partnership
By John Lee.
Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani has reaffirmed his government's commitment to upgrading Baghdad International Airport (BIAP), chairing a high-level meeting to advance a public-private partnership (PPP) project aimed at overhauling Iraq's main aviation hub.
Attended by representatives from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Prime Minister's advisors, and the Head of the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA), the meeting focused on finalising the bidding documents and launching the Request for Proposals (RFP) for qualified investors.
The Prime Minister emphasised that the project must reflect Baghdad's status and meet rising passenger demand, in line with international standards. He called for guarantees to protect current employees and enhance their skills, while ensuring commercial management to improve state revenues.
Plans include a new terminal with an annual capacity of 8.5 million passengers-expected to rise to 15 million by 2040-along with runway upgrades, VIP terminal unification, and investment in commercial activities around the airport.
The IFC, which has supported similar airport projects in 11 airports across nine countries, is advising the government on feasibility, technical scope, and private sector engagement. While security and core sovereign functions will remain under government control, private investors will manage passenger services, ground handling, and air cargo within the terminals.

Baghdad rocked by explosions: Iranian missiles traverse Iraqi skies
Shafaq News/ The loud explosions that rattled Baghdad early Saturday were caused by Iranian missiles crossing Iraqi airspace, a security source confirmed. The source told Shafaq News that one missile's fuel tank crashed between Abu Ghraib and Al-Radwaniyah, west of the capital, with no casualties recorded. The incident unfolded as Iran and Israel entered their second week of direct strikes, with both sides exchanging missile and drone attacks across multiple fronts. Meanwhile, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani renewed his rejection of Israel 's use of Iraqi airspace in strikes against Iran. In a meeting with UK Ambassador Irfan Siddiq, al-Sudani condemned the overflights as a 'violation of sovereignty' and a threat to both regional and global security. He called on the UN Security Council's permanent members to intervene—demanding a halt to Israeli strikes on Iran and Gaza, and pressing for immediate humanitarian access to the besieged Palestinian enclave.

UK-Iraq Solar Energy Partnership Advances with 3,000MW Project
By John Lee. Iraq's Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadhil, met with UK Ambassador Irfan Siddiq and a high-level delegation to discuss British companies' role in implementing solar energy projects and reaffirm Iraq's commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement. The delegation included Lara Hampshire, UK Director of Trade in Iraq, and Yasmin Khan, Director of Operations and Energy Trade Adviser. Talks focused on the memorandum of understanding signed last month with the UGT Renewables, a UK-US company, to develop an integrated 3,000MW solar energy project in Iraq. The project includes battery storage systems with a capacity of up to 500MW and the construction of 1,000km of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission lines to enhance grid efficiency and stability. Minister Fadhil emphasised the importance of this initiative for Iraq's national power system and praised the strong collaboration with the UK and reputable international firms. The executing company will also implement a two-year training programme and provide maintenance services using advanced D-EPC methods. Fadhil reaffirmed the government's goal of reducing carbon emissions from the energy sector, targeting 12,000MW of solar capacity by 2030 as part of its broader renewable energy strategy. The British delegation expressed their commitment to deepening the energy partnership with Iraq and contributing technical expertise to support sustainable development in the electricity sector.
