Call to teach four more Sabah ethnic languages in schools gains traction

KOTA KINABALU: A proposal to expand the teaching of the Kadazandusun language in schools to include four other major ethnic languages in Sabah has been submitted to the Federal Government.
Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said the proposal came following engagements with various ethnic associations and teachers who called for broader representation of Sabah's linguistic diversity in schools.
"Currently, Kadazandusun taught in schools is based solely on the Bunduliwan dialect, as per the agreement between the Kadazandusun Cultural Association and the United Sabah Dusun Association.
"After I joined the Federal Cabinet, I received requests from ethnic associations and Kadazandusun language teachers in Penampang, Tuaran, Kuala Penyu and Tenom. I later led a Sabah delegation to meet Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek last year,' he said.
Ewon, who is also United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) president, said the delegation proposed that four additional ethnic languages — Tatana in Kuala Penyu, Kadazan Tangaa in Penampang, Murut Timugon in Tenom, and Dusun Lotud in Tuaran — be included in the school curriculum.
'YB Fadhlina agreed to the idea, and a special committee under the Education Ministry has since been formed to study the proposal. I will continue to follow through to make this a reality,' he said.
Ewon made the remarks yesterday during the Odou do Kaamatan celebration in Kg Mahandoi, hosted by Upko Beaufort and attended by the Kuala Penyu community living and working in Kota Kinabalu.
He said his ministry had channelled special allocations to four ethnic language associations — Tatana, Murut Timugon, Lotud Tuaran, and Kadazan Penampang — to support the development of curriculum modules, workbooks, and textbooks.
Ewon stressed that it was his responsibility to be part of the effort to empower ethnic languages in schools, and that was why he had ensured the necessary funding was provided last year to kickstart the development of teaching materials.
He also suggested that the teaching of these languages could begin as pilot programmes in selected schools within the relevant districts.
In the case of Kuala Penyu, he said it would be more appropriate to teach the Tatana language instead of the Bunduliwan dialect, as most parents and teachers in the district belong to the Tatana community.
Ewon said Sabah could learn from Sarawak's model, where Bahasa Iban is already taught in schools and Bidayuh was recently introduced as a pilot programme.
"A delegation from Sabah has even visited schools in Sarawak to observe how Bidayuh is being taught as an addition to Iban,' he said.
He also stressed the importance of preserving cultural celebrations like Kaamatan, which he said has become a symbol of unity not only among the Momogun community but across ethnic and religious lines, even abroad.

Hajiji stated that one of the initiatives for the agriculture sector was the establishment of the Sabah Paddy and Rice Board and the introduction of the Rice Crop Takaful Scheme. He further said that human capital development was being achieved through youth-focused programmes covering skills training, education, entrepreneurship, leadership and sports. The state government had also approved the formation of the Sabah State TVET (Technical, Vocational Education and Training) Council. It would serve as a coordinating and monitoring platform for technical and vocational education and training. 'We want to ensure Sabah's youth are equipped with relevant knowledge and skills,' he added. Hajiji also said that the state is committed to maintaining ties and cooperation with the Federal Government. He thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the Federal Government for their ongoing support in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security, as well as for their efforts in defending Sabah's sovereignty on the international stage. 'The success in repelling foreign claims over Sabah affirms our sovereignty within the Federation of Malaysia, giving the people of Sabah greater confidence and reassurance,' he said.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the SMJ initiative has yielded significant impact since its introduction, particularly in economic recovery, investment growth, agriculture, human capital development and social welfare. 'Alhamdulillah, we are witnessing a surge in investment activity and an increase in state revenue over the past few years. This is a testament to the effectiveness of the government's strategic approach,' he said. Hajiji said this in his speech during the 74th official birthday celebration of the Head of State, Tun (Dr) Musa Aman, held at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Saturday. He emphasised that agriculture remains a key focus area for the State Government, as it plays a crucial role in strengthening food security in Sabah. Among the notable initiatives, he said, is the establishment of the Sabah Paddy and Rice Board (LPBS) and the launch of the Paddy Crop Takaful Scheme (STTP), which aims to raise the state's rice self-sufficiency level from the current 24 per cent in 2025 to 60 per cent by 2030. 'This is a strategic move to enhance Sabah's self-reliance in food production while reducing dependency on imports,' he stressed. In line with developing future-ready talent, Hajiji said human capital development, particularly among youth, remains high on the government's agenda through various empowerment programmes involving skills training, education, entrepreneurship, leadership and sports. The State Government, he added, has also approved the establishment of the Sabah State TVET Council as a coordinating and monitoring platform for technical and vocational education and training in line with industry demands. 'We want to ensure that Sabah's youth are equipped with relevant knowledge and skills to meaningfully contribute to the development of the state and the nation,' he said. On federal-state ties, Hajiji reiterated that the close cooperation and good relations with the Federal Government will continue to be upheld to ensure Sabah is not left behind in the national development agenda. He expressed appreciation for the Federal Government's various forms of assistance and initiatives, especially in areas such as infrastructure, health, education and security. Hajiji also thanked the Prime Minister for his firm stance in safeguarding Sabah's rights and sovereignty, including the recent success in fending off foreign claims against the state at the international level. 'Malaysia's success in defending Sabah from external claims affirms the state's sovereign status under the Malaysian Federation and provides reassurance and confidence to the people of Sabah,' he said. Trump ordered the deployment of thousands of National Guard troops and hundreds of Marines into Los Angeles this month in response to protests over federal immigration sweeps — a move opposed by city leaders and Newsom. A lower court judge had last week ordered Trump to return control of the California National Guard to Newsom, saying the president's decision to deploy them to protest-hit Los Angeles was 'illegal.' But a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals unanimously ruled that Trump was within his rights when he ordered 4,000 members of the National Guard into service for 60 days to 'protect federal personnel performing federal functions and to protect federal property.' 'Affording appropriate deference to the President's determination, we conclude that he likely acted within his authority in federalising the National Guard,' they said in their 38-page ruling.
