AARTO road rule adjustments kick in
With the implementation of the new Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (AARTO) regulations on June 5, South African drivers will be subjected to substantial changes.
Some offences have been categorised as critical under the new AARTO regulations due to their impact on traffic safety.
These include speeding excessively, running red lights, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated or under the influence of illicit substances.
Each of these infractions involves demerit points, and your driver's licence may be suspended if you accumulate too many points.
The rules aim to enforce a better adherence to road rules, which will increase driver awareness behind the steering wheel.

Kyalami in pole position for South Africa GP return in 2028

The former South Africa GP host circuit, located just North of Johannesburg, has staged no less than 21 F1 races up until its last in 1993. ADVERTISEMENT Nevertheless, Formula 1 is plainly keen to complete an expanded calendar. By reintegrating the African continent into its 24-race schedule, which has been missing for 32 years, F1 will truly become a 'world championship' once again … RETURN OF THE SOUTH AFRICA GP Government officials and circuit owners have lots to smile about at Kyalami. Image: File However, many names have been linked with a future African GP. In preceding months this has included Cape Town, Rwanda and even Morocco. Nevertheless, Kyalami currently has FIA Grade 2 status. But this week it had its plans for F1-ready 'Grade 1' certification approved by the FIA. In a statement by Kyalami GP Circuit owner, Toby Venter, he announced it has: 'Received confirmation that the FIA has accepted final design proposals. This will upgrade the circuit to Grade 1 status, which is the highest international standard required to host Formula 1. As such, once the capital works are completed and a final inspection conducted, Kyalami will become Africa's only FIA Grade 1 circuit, capable of hosting Formula 1 on the African continent,' said Venter. Thembisa Taxi Association appoints new leadership
Every four years, the Thembisa Local Taxi Association (Telta) appoints a new executive team to build on their predecessors' work and ensure the smooth running of the local taxi industry. The latest leadership changes took place recently, marked by a celebratory handover at the Rabasotho Community Centre. Under the leadership of chairperson Zweli Mnisi, the association committed to a fresh start, focusing on transparency, improved communication and stronger community collaboration. The new executives officially took up their positions, with stakeholders from the Ekurhuleni region, the Department of Transport and other regional committees in attendance. 'As the new PRO under Mnisi's leadership, I am committed to working closely with the community and the business forum. 'Our first step is to rebuild the trust lost over the years. We aim to educate commuters about our services and be more visible and accessible,' said Moleya. He acknowledged that the association's past silence on key community issues damaged public trust. 'We know the community once relied on us, but we stayed silent and failed to show up as we should have. It's time to correct those mistakes. 'We have officially taken up our roles, and I am ready to serve the community through programmes, solutions and open dialogue,' he said. If you lose something or feel mistreated, you can report it to us using the number. It's linked to our database, allowing us to quickly trace the driver and resolve the issue.' The new leadership promised to keep the media updated on changes, progress and initiatives aimed at improving the commuter experience and protecting commuter rights. Dr Mandlakhe Mtshali, representing the Ekurhuleni region and the Department of Transport, praised the leadership transition and the association's dedication to building stronger community ties. 'We aim to build a partnership with the people of Thembisa. We welcome the community's guidance on creating a better, co-operative future.
