Penang's RFP for water taxi cancelled as company fails to comply with LOI
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has agreed to cancel the Request for Proposal (RFP) for the water taxi service following the failure of the company involved to comply with the Letter of Intent (LoI) by securing all necessary approvals from the Transport Ministry.
State infrastructure, transport and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the MBPP Procurement Board had issued a cancellation letter to the company on April 17.
"At present, the state government is in discussions with the Transport Ministry to review the terms and feasibility of this project in greater detail.
"If the RFP is reopened in the future, the state government hopes that interested companies will be truly prepared and capable of fulfilling all the required conditions,' he said in a written reply to Teh Lai Heng (PH-Komtar) regarding the latest status of the water taxi service during the Penang state assembly sitting here on Monday (May 19).
Zairil said two companies had submitted proposals through the RFP and several presentation sessions were held before the RFP Technical Evaluation Committee, after which MBPP issued a Letter of Intent to the selected company.
However, he said, the company must first obtain further approvals from relevant agencies such as the Marine Department of Malaysia, the Penang Port Commission (SPPP), the District and Land Office, the Maritime Department, and other related agencies before a letter of acceptance can be issued.
In 2021, MBPP, in collaboration with the state government and other relevant agencies, conducted a preliminary study and identified suitable jetty locations to be used as pick-up and drop-off points, with four locations proposed for the water taxi service.- Bernama

KLIA Aerotrain to resume service for travellers on July 1, Transport Ministry announces
SEPANG, June 21 — The new Aerotrain service at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) will officially begin operations come July 1. Confirming service resumption next month, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said he is hopeful the latest development would allow a greater comfort for travelling passengers transiting between the main terminal and the satellite building. 'I am happy to announce that we are entering the final phase of testings in the coming days. 'If all goes smoothly, we have decided to reopen the train service at 10am on July 1,' he told a press conference after attending a trial-run at the KLIA Terminal 1 building here. The Aerotrain, a key component of KLIA's internal transport system since 1998, was suspended in March 2023 following a breakdown. The new Aerotrain system is expected to improve the passenger experience, reduce operational disruptions, and support the anticipated increase in air passenger traffic in the coming years. Batu Ferringhi coastal erosion project nears completion
GEORGE TOWN: The coastal erosion mitigation project at Batu Ferringhi has made significant progress, with sandbag installation works now 95 per cent completed. State Infrastructure, Transport and Utility Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the initiative, which started in April, was funded through an emergency allocation of RM250,000. "The project, covering a 130m stretch from Rasa Sayang Hotel to Golden Sands Hotel, is now in its final stages, with contractors focusing on finishing works," he said in his latest Facebook entry. He also showed several photos of the work done. Zairil said, in addition to the immediate response, a long-term solution was underway under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), with an estimated cost of RM61 million. He said the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) is currently in the process of appointing surveyor for hydrographic survey of the coastline, which spans from Batu Ferringhi to Tanjung Bunga. "Physical works for the long-term solution are expected to begin next year or 2027," he added. During a visit here in April, Deputy Energy Transition and Water Transformation (Petra) Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the federal government had approved a RM61 million budget for vital restoration works for Batu Ferringhi following erosion issue. He said the project would focus on both immediate protection and long-term preservation, with particular details to maintaining the beach's attractiveness as a tourist destination. The design, to be finalised this year, would incorporate a combination of solutions such as breakwaters, sand nourishment, and other mitigation measures to stabilise the area and protect the 7km beachfront, stretching from Batu Ferringhi to Tanjung Bunga. The Batu Ferringhi beach, one of Penang's most iconic tourist destinations, has experienced considerable degradation over the past few years due to shifting sand and constant wave action.

Singapore eyes driverless buses in HDB estates to cut commute times, ease manpower crunch over next five years
SINGAPORE, June 17 – Singapore plans to expand its use of self-driving vehicles islandwide over the next five years, aiming to enhance public transport efficiency and reduce commuting times, particularly for residents in Housing Development Board (HDB) estates located further from the city. The Straits Times (ST) wrote citing Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow saying autonomous vehicles could ease manpower pressures and offer more transport options in neighbourhoods, forming a key part of efforts to make public transport more appealing. 'It relieves our public transport system of one key constraint, which is manpower. And it will add to the range of options that people have in HDB estates,' Siow was quoted saying. Siow also outlined plans to deploy smaller, driverless vehicles on flexible fixed routes within HDB areas, serving key nodes during peak hours and locations like clinics or community centres at other times. 'I think that will be a significant addition to our public transport network and the technology is already here,' he added, citing examples in San Francisco and Guangzhou, which he plans to visit later this month. Siow said his priority is to cut travel times to the city for areas like Tengah, Punggol, Jurong West and Pasir Ris, through more walkable towns and denser bus networks — though he noted challenges such as the time and resources needed to recruit drivers and expand bus infrastructure. Autonomous vehicles, instead, could address these issues by efficiently handling the 'first and last mile' of commutes to MRT stations and bus interchanges, which currently account for significant inefficiencies. Calling self-driving technology a 'game changer', he said it could fundamentally alter car ownership trends and potentially impact the certificate of entitlement (COE) system in the long run. According to ST, Singapore began exploring autonomous transport in 2014, but progress has been limited. However, recent technological advancements have reignited interest, with the Land Transport Authority closing a proposal call for autonomous bus trials set to begin in mid-2026. Asked about the goal of achieving a '45-minute city' and '20-minute towns', Siow acknowledged these were stretch targets. However, he affirmed that Singapore was nearing its aim of having 80 per cent of households within a 10-minute walk of an MRT station, aided by upcoming lines like the Jurong Region Line and Cross Island Line.
