How Does Team Sheikh Hasina Work In Exile? Inside The IT Cell Of Awami League
Last Updated:
The primary job of the IT Cell is to run five social media platforms of Awami League—Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Telegram
This week, in London's Chatham House, Chief Adviser to the interim Bangladesh government, Md Yunus, recounted how he almost pleaded with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to restrain former Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina from communicating with her support base in Bangladesh or across the world.
'I said to PM Modi: 'You want to host her? I can't force you to abandon that policy, but please help us in making sure she doesn't speak to Bangladeshi people the way she is doing as the whole of Bangladesh gets very angry.' India is not doing what I asked. Modi's answer was: 'It is social media, we can't control it.' What can you say? It's an explosive situation. You can't just walk away by saying it's social media," Yunus recounted as he desperately tries to dry up any information on Awami League—the party of the now-exiled Hasina.
But how does a party, whose entire cadre base are either too intimidated in the country to react or the leadership in exile, function? Most importantly, how does the communication work when the party itself has been banned in Bangladesh recently? 'Though there was just 40 per cent voter turnout in the last election, Awami League won 224 out of 300 contested parliamentary seats. You cannot dismiss such a prevalent political discourse of Bangladesh, all of a sudden," argues Bangladeshi journalist Sahidul Hasan Khokon.
So, how does the Awami League stay afloat while its top leadership is in exile? Sources within the party say that soon after August 5, 2024, when Hasina had to flee to Ghaziabad's Hindon Airport, the Awami League fell back to what it calls the 'Covid-19 era set-ups'. The backbone of the set-up was former minister of state for information and broadcasting, Mohammad A Arafat, who is now based out of Kolkata. He set up Awami League's busiest nerve centre in the outskirts of Kolkata in Newtown area.
The primary job of the IT Cell is to run five social media platforms of Awami League—Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Telegram. Facebook remains its biggest mass-connect platform, where it has 3.9 million followers. On Twitter, it has seen a sudden spike ever since last year, say sources and the follower count has crossed 6,58,000. On YouTube, it has 4,66,000 followers, while a nascent effort on Instagram has garnered just 12,000 followers.
However, what remains the medium of choice for Hasina to communicate is Telegram. Though a Telegram channel is also open for general cadres and supporters, which has more than 93,000 subscribers and counting, content is pushed like the latest one highlighting the arrest of ISKCON's Chinmoy Prabhu calling it 'deeper crisis in minority rights", appealing to the Hindu voters of Bangladesh who have been traditionally loyal with Hasina.
'Every day, Sheikh Hasina meets the support base of Awami League that is left behind in Bangladesh. She interacts for three to five hours every day on average. So far, she has been interacting with the district committees. Apart from the few days of Eid, she hasn't taken a break as such. We record the entire conversation and extract the operative portion that can inspire our cadres, using it as content on different social media handles. We then push them on the social," explains Arafat.
A person who is aware of how the whole ecosystem of Awami League IT Cell works, adds that Hasina has completed 63 out of 64 district committees so far.
The break Arafat was referring to was when Hasina managed to spend six days with her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy. Sources say he came on a US passport after the Bangladesh interim government cancelled his passport. While Arafat holds the fort in Kolkata, Joy holds the fort in Washington DC. Sources say six to seven individuals work in the Kolkata team while three to four work in the Washington DC team under Joy.

'We have teams in London, Brussels and the Middle East as well. But they are not necessarily party workers. Many of them are also from the diaspora who feel strongly about their country and the party's ideological standings. So, they extend their helping hand," adds Arafat.
But the inevitable question—How is Sheikh Hasina doing? Smiles Arafat. 'She is reading a lot. She believes we will triumph (over Yunus)."

Special Flight With 290 Indian Students Evacuated From Iran Under Operation Sindhu Lands In Delhi
This specific flight, an Iranian airline charter coordinated by Indian authorities, arrived at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport at around 11.30 pm on Friday In the thick of intensifying hostilities between Israel and Iran, the Indian government has initiated Operation Sindhu, a crucial mission to evacuate its nationals from West Asia. A significant milestone in this operation was achieved late on Friday, June 20, when a special flight from Mashhad, Iran, carrying 290 Indian students, primarily from Jammu and Kashmir, safely landed at the Delhi airport. This specific flight, an Iranian airline charter coordinated by Indian authorities, arrived at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport at around 11.30 pm IST. The successful arrival provided immense relief to the students and their worried families, who had been stranded amid the worsening security situation in Iran due to recent large-scale aerial bombings and retaliatory missile attacks between Iran and Israel. The overarching goal of Operation Sindhu is to repatriate approximately 1,000 Indian nationals from Iran, including many students pursuing professional courses and religious pilgrims. In a notable display of cooperation, Iran made an exception to its airspace closure—imposed due to the ongoing conflict—allowing India's evacuation flights. This facilitated the direct flight from Mashhad to Delhi. Earlier in the week, students were relocated from Tehran to safer cities like Qom and then to Mashhad to facilitate their departure. This flight was not the first under Operation Sindhu. On Thursday, June 19, an initial group of 110 Indian students, predominantly from Urmia University, had already arrived in Delhi. These students were evacuated via a land route to Armenia, then flown from Yerevan to New Delhi. Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah had been actively monitoring the situation, confirming that more students, primarily from his state, were being evacuated via land routes to Armenia before being airlifted. The ministry of external affairs has stressed that the Indian government prioritises the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad. They continue to monitor the situation closely and maintain constant communication with the Indian community in Iran. Additional flights are scheduled for Saturday, including one from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, and another from Mashhad, to bring back more Indian nationals under Operation Sindhu. Modi's speech neither fills stomach nor provides employment: Tejaswi
Patna, June 20 (UNI) "Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speech neither fills the stomach nor provides employment", taunted leader of opposition in Bihar assembly Tejaswi Prasad Yadav, alleging that the BJP was misusing hard earned money of the people of Bihar for its publicity. Taking pot shots at the official programme and public meeting of Modi in Siwan, Yadav told news persons here on Saturday that the "PM's speech was devoid of content" and alleged that the manner in which the official function was organised, it appeared more like a function of the BJP. The expenditure on the event was incurred by the Bihar government, he said, adding that over Rs 100 crore was spent on a single such function. The amount spent was actually the hard-earned money of the people of Bihar, he alleged, adding that the people of the state do not get the benefit of their money. The BJP, which boasts of being the richest party in the world, misused the public funds of Bihar where salary payment is not on time, the dues of MNREGA workers were pending for six months, scholarships were not given to students but the government's fund was being drained out on glorifying a particular party. The common people of Bihar were upset with the expenses incurred in the rally, he alleged. The entire government machinery was pressed into service to bring the crowd for the PM's event but people did not turn up, which indicates that they were no more interested to hear the "jumlas" of the Prime Minister. Accusing the government of not checking corruption, Yadav said it was rampant at every level in Bihar where the corrupt people were being patronised. Tejaswi said that the railway engines manufactured in Bihar were now being exported but the rail factory was the contribution of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav who as the railway minister, worked to make the railways profitable along with setting up a railway engine factory, wheel factory, coach factory in Bihar and provided convenience to the common passenger by reducing the railway fares every year, but contrary to it PM Modi has introduced expensive trains like Vande Bharat. He asked Modi to tell the people about any factories he set up in Bihar, revived sugar mills and created employment opportunities or provided jobs. The RJD leader boasted of reviving the Riga sugar mill during his 17-month tenure and provided means of employment to the people of Sitamarhi. The PM also did not tell about the migration which took place during the last 20 years of the NDA rule in Bihar, Yadav said, and alleged that instead of speaking about the issues of Bihar including migration, unemployment, establishing industries, IT park, textile park, education and health Modi made all tall promises. Speaking about Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Yadav said Bihar now does not need an "unconscious chief minister who is only interested in protecting his power and chair". Exasperated at the law and order situation of the state, Yadav alleged that crime was at its peak and the morale of criminals has gone up to such an extent that they do not even hesitate in firing bullets in the protected areas. He said that PM Modi did not utter even a single word on the deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar during his deliberations. Venting his ire on the recent row over the alleged insult to BR Ambedkar's photo by Lalu Yadav, the RJD leader blamed the PM of remaining silent to the insult of Ambedkar by none other than Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Yadav accused the PM of misleading the people of the state by repeating the ostentatious foundation stone laying, inauguration and commencement of work announcements that have been made continuously since 2015. He asked Modi to explain why Bihar was the worst state in the country in terms of poverty, unemployment, per capita income, investment, literacy rate and industrialization in the reports of Niti Aayog and many standard agencies of the central government "despite the double engine powered NDA government ruling for the last 20 years in Bihar and for 11 years at the Centre". The RJD leader said Modi should also answer "why Dalits were unsafe in Bihar, farmers worried, women were oppressed and people were dying in hooch tragedies". UNI RS RN
