'Moving Great Wall:' China unleash towering teen basketball star

China look set to unleash their 2.26m (7ft 5in) "moving Great Wall" at the Women's Asia Cup after teenager Zhang Ziyu put in another towering display days after her debut. The 18-year-old centre scored 18 points as China beat great rivals Japan 101-92 on Wednesday in Xi'an in a warm-up for the regional tournament next month on home soil. It was her third appearance for the senior Chinese squad, having helped them to blowout victories over Bosnia and Herzegovina over the weekend. Chinese state media dubbed her and gangly centre Han Xu the "Twin Towers." Zhang's looming presence on court — footage showed her barely needing to jump to make a basket — seemed to stump Japan head coach Corey Gaines. Asked if he had figured out a way "to deal" with the teenager, the American ex-NBA guard told reporters: "We'll just say: Interesting. Very interesting." Zhang Ziyu (#28) shoots as Japan's Azusa Asahina (#14/R) blocks during a warm-up game in Xian. AFP Zhang hails from northern China's Shandong province and had reached 2.10m by the end of primary school. She has been likened by Chinese fans to Houston Rockets great Yao Ming. Yao, who at 2.29m was one of the tallest NBA players in history, was known as the "moving Great Wall" before retiring from basketball in 2011 and Zhang has now taken on the nickname. Both of Zhang's parents played professional basketball. Her father, Zhang Lei, turned out for the Chinese Basketball Association's Jinan Military Region while her mother Yu Ying played as a centre for Shandong, according to local media. Zhang Ziyu (#28) shoots as Japan's Miwa Kuribayashi (#77) and Nanako Todo (#75) try to block during a warm-up game. AFP The teenager may have a distinct height advantage but she has been told she needs to sharpen up. Experienced centre Yang Liwei said after Wednesday's win that Zhang "could have been tougher on some shots". "I think she played at her normal level," added Yang, who helped China win the Asian title in 2023. China meet Japan again on Friday at home for another warm-up. Both will play at the Women's Asia Cup in Shenzhen from July 13. Agence France-Presse

Basketball major LA Lakers to be sold for a record 10bn

Image courtesy: Los Angeles Lakers/ X Tthe Los Angeles Lakers (LA Lakers) are set to change hands in a landmark deal, with minority owner Mark Walter reportedly acquiring the family's majority stake for $10bn, according to ESPN and multiple reports, making it the most expensive sale of a US professional sports franchise ever. The Buss family, owners since 1979 when Jerry Buss purchased the team for $67.5m, agreed to the sale in a move approved by the NBA's board of governors. Post-sale, Jeanie Buss is expected to remain as team governor and the family will retain just over 15 per cent of shares for a period. Walter, already a 27 per cent stakeholder since a 2021 investment, will take majority control, it is reported. Walter is CEO and chairman of His purchase follows earlier buys of a 26–27 per cent stake in the LA Lakers for approximately $1.35bn, secured with first refusal rights on the majority share. Celebratory reaction at the sale Magic Johnson, former Lakers star and Dodgers co-owner, posted on X: 'Laker fans should be ecstatic. A few things I can tell you about Mark … he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way.' He added Walter will 'put in the resources needed to win,' praising Jeanie Buss for choosing a successor aligned with the Lakers legacy. LA Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also tweeted that Walter is competitive and prepared to build a championship-calibre Lakers team. The valuation eclipses recent high-profile NBA team sales: Mavericks (circa$3.5 bn), Celtics ($6.1 bn), and Suns/Mercury ($4bn). It also tops other major US sports deals. What comes next for the LA Lakers The NBA's board of governors is expected to review the transaction. The LA Lakers have not yet issued an official statement. Walter's track record with the Dodgers and Sparks suggests continued emphasis on investment in player talent, facilities, and franchise growth.

Guggenheim Partners' Mark Walter to buy LA Lakers for world record $10bn

The Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most successful and iconic franchises in basketball history, will create yet another record when it gets sold for US$10 billion – the highest price ever paid for a sports franchise. The Buss family, which has owned LA Lakers since 1979, has agreed to sell the team to financier Mark Walter, the CEO of investment firm Guggenheim Partners, which has more than US$345 billion in assets under management. Walter is also the owner of LA Dodgers in Major League Baseball (MLB), a team that he purchased for US$2.2 billion in 2012. Walter's $10bn Lakers takeover Lakers are one of the most storied teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and have had a roster of superstars through the years – starting from LeBron James in the current squad to Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Magic Johnson and Wilt Chamberlain. According to The Athletic, a source close to the negotiations said the sale has not been finalised yet and could eventually value the team at US$12 billion. That would be almost double that of the US$6.1 billion valuation for the Boston Celtics, when the team got sold to Bill Chisholm in March this year. Before Celtics, the record was the $6.05 billion sale of the National Football League (NFL) team Washington Commanders to the Harris Group in July 2023. The Celtics' sale is also not yet finalised, and is pending final approval by the NBA's board of governors, who are scheduled to meet in Las Vegas next month. Jeanie Buss, whose father Jerry bought the team in 1979 for US$67.5 million, is expected to remain as team governor. Walter is already part of a group that acquired 27 per cent of the Lakers in 2021. Jeanie, if she remains the team governor, will still own at least 15 per cent as part of an NBA rule that stipulates a governor must have at least that much of an ownership stake. Magic Johnson, who has co-owned teams along with Walter, said the deal will be magical for Lakers fans, who can expect similar results that have seen the Dodgers become two-time World Series champions after being on the brink of bankruptcy when Walter took over in 2012. 'Mark Walter is the best choice and will be the best caretaker of the Laker brand,' said Johnson on social media. 'The proof is in the pudding on what he's been able to accomplish with the LA Dodgers. Mark has been nothing short of a winner, notching 2 World Series and 11 NL (National League) West divisional titles in the last 12 years! 'Laker fans should be (ecstatic). A few things I can tell you about Mark – he is driven by winning, excellence, and doing everything the right way. AND he will put in the resources needed to win! I can understand why Jeanie sold the team to Mark Walter because they are just alike – they are competitive people, have big hearts, love to give back, and both prefer to be behind the scenes. This makes all the sense in the world.'
