EBRD backs Egypt's first solar and battery storage project

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is supporting Egypt's renewable-energy sector by providing a US$ 30 million equity bridge to Obelisk Solar Power, a special purpose vehicle owned by Scatec ASA, a leading global renewable energy developer and a key strategic client for the EBRD.
The funds will contribute to the equity commitments required for the construction of a 1 gigawatt-alternating current (GWac) photovoltaic solar plant and a 200 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Nagaa Hammadi. It will be one of the first hybrid renewable energy projects in Egypt and is expected to serve as a pilot for uptake of the technology in the country.
The project will support the green energy transition in Egypt while helping keep the grid stable and reliable in the face of growing electricity demand. It is being developed under the EBRD-led energy pillar of Egypt's Nexus on Water, Food, Energy, which was launched at COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh with the aim of unlocking the country's potential to become the leading renewable energy hub in the region. The project is expected to reduce Egypt's CO 2 emissions by 1,357,000 tonnes per year.
Egypt is a founding member of the EBRD. Since the start of the Bank's operations in the country in 2012, it has invested more than €13.8 billion in 201 projects across the country. Turkey has stopped short of condemning the US strikes on Iran, despite many of the Islamic Republic's major allies, as well as several regional states, criticising the escalation and viewing it as a risky gambit. US President Donald Trump said in a televised address late on Saturday that Washington had struck three of Iran's nuclear sites in an effort to disable the Islamic Republic's nuclear enrichment capabilities. "I can report to the world that the strikes were a spectacular military success. Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated," Trump said, adding that Tehran needed to "make peace" as he threatened more intense attacks if it did not. "There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days," he added. Several hours after the attacks took place, Turkey's foreign ministry warned that the strikes risked further destabilising the region's security environment. This measured tone stood in stark contrast to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's remarks a day earlier, in which he described the weeks-long Israeli strikes as "banditry". Although Ankara has long opposed Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, it has also consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions. Notably, in 2010, Turkey and Brazil brokered a nuclear fuel swap deal in an effort to defuse tensions. "Iran's pursuit of so-called nuclear deterrence, justified by its leaders as a necessary defence, is viewed in Turkiye as a dangerous gamble that could trigger a regional arms race," wrote Murat Yesiltas, a security expert at the Seta think tank and a member of the Turkish Presidency's Council on Foreign Relations, on Sunday. "Turkey's opposition to Israeli aggression does not imply tacit support for Iran's nuclear ambitions." Long-term political considerations Ankara has characterised Israel's recent attacks on Iran's facilities as unprovoked, particularly in light of reports that neither US intelligence nor the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) believes Tehran is actively pursuing a nuclear weapon. "Turkey is ready to fulfill its responsibilities and make constructive contributions." Despite his fiery rhetoric, Erdogan often walks a fine line in regional conflicts, seeking to avoid taking sides in order to position Turkey advantageously. Turkey's Nato membership and its ongoing close relationship with Washington give it leverage with both adversaries and allies in pursuit of its strategic goals. "Turkey's stance on the Israel-Iran conflict is not based on short-term political considerations," Yesiltas said. "The risks are not abstract. They include direct threats to [Turkey's] territorial security, energy security, economic goals and demographic stability."

Cairo — For the first time ever, Egypt has officially assumed the position of Vice President of the International Gas Union (IGU) through the Egyptian Gas & Energy Association. This step paves the way for Egypt's upcoming presidency of the next triennium (2028-2031). This role reflects increasing international confidence in Egypt's capabilities to effectively contribute to shaping the future of global energy, marking it as the first country from Africa and the Middle East to hold this prestigious position. Eng. Khaled AbuBakr, Chairman of the Egyptian Gas & Energy Association (EGEA), has taken up the role of IGU Vice President. In this capacity, he participates in all meetings and activities of the IGU and the Executive Committee. He also represents the IGU in the ongoing gas debates, such as the G7, G20, and UN Climate Change Conferences, in addition to the major international conferences, to advance its strategic vision and enhance its global influence. Eng.
