As temporary aid expires, gas line fire victims plead for extension

PETALING JAYA : Victims of the Putra Heights gas pipeline fire are hoping that temporary aid like rental homes and vehicles previously provided by various parties can be extended as some of the assistance expired recently.
Two months after the incident on April 1, some victims are in a quandary as they are required to return the temporary homes, cars and motorcycles given to them.
Nasir Ab Hamid, 69, a resident of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, said his family is currently staying in a small house near their original home, with rental support for three months while waiting for their house to be repaired.
'My house was deemed a total loss, with an estimated repair cost of RM150,000, but to this day, the appointed contractor has yet to begin work,' he told Bernama when met at the housing estate today.
Nasir said the temporary vehicle he received was also returned last month after the loan period ended.
'For daily errands, if I need a car, I use my Kancil that I've slowly repaired bit by bit. We're not looking for luxury, just a car that can serve our everyday needs,' said the father of nine.
Nasir said his family is trying to carry on with life as usual for now, understanding that repairs to their home will take time as many other houses were also affected.
His wife, Aliyah Ismail, 55, said she was grateful for the aid given to them but hopes that cash compensation would also be provided to help victims, especially those left homeless.
Previously a catering business operator, she now sells traditional cakes and snacks, earning between RM20 and RM30 a day to help cover daily expenses, in addition to financial support from her children.
'As of now, we haven't heard anything about compensation, only about home repairs. Compensation should be given. We have no money, no income. Rental is expensive.
'Goods are expensive, too, and to restart my catering business, I need to buy a lot of supplies and equipment because everything was destroyed in the fire,' she said.
The gas pipeline fire saw flames soaring over 30m high with temperatures reaching 1,000 degrees Celsius. Firemen took nearly eight hours to fully extinguish the blaze.
Eighty-one homes were destroyed, with structural damage exceeding 40%. Another 81 houses were partially damaged, and 57 homes were affected but not burned.

Ringgit higher at opening amid ongoing geopolitical tensions
KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar and a basket of major currencies on Monday despite a strong US Dollar Index (DXY) as ongoing geopolitical tensions, with the US involvement in the Israel-Iran conflict, in focus, said an analyst. At 8am, the local note rose to 4.2420/4.2655 against the greenback from Friday's close of 4.2505/4.2565. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid said there are fears of a wider conflagration in the region as the US announced 'successful' airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites. 'The focus is clearly on how it might impact crude oil prices and risk sentiment. 'Brent Crude oil prices rallied by 2.49% to US$78.93 per barrel, the highest since January 2025 with concerns over Iranian retaliation and (the possibility that it) might use the Straits of Hormuz choke point as leverage in the prevailing conflict,' he told Bernama. Afzanizam also said the ringgit could depreciate against the US dollar due to the defensive mode among traders. He said there could be a risk-off mode in the currency market,as the US DXY has risen to 98.937 points, while precious commodities, such as spot gold, were up by 0.27% to US$3,377.42 per ounce. At the opening, the ringgit traded higher against a basket of major currencies. It trended higher against the Japanese yen at 2.9023/2.9186 from 2.9245/2.9289 at Friday's close, rose versus the British pound to 5.7000/5.7316 from 5.7356/5.7437, and inched up against the euro to 4.8800/4.9070 from 4.9000/4.9069 previously. The local note also traded firmer against its Asean counterparts. It appreciated against the Singapore dollar to 3.2948/3.3133 from 3.3088/3.3140 at Friday's close, climbed to 12.9243/13.0042 from 12.9727/12.9969 versus the Thai baht, advanced vis-a-vis the Indonesian rupiah to 258.6/260.2 from 259.2/259.7 and gained against the Philippine peso to 7.42/7.46 from 7.43/7.45.

Sarawak tops vape use among youth, state minister calls for urgent action on rising trend
KUCHING, June 23 — Sarawak has the highest vape users among youngsters aged 13 to 17 years in Malaysia, based on the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) undertaken in 2022, which recorded prevalence rate of 20.3 per cent, or 39,608 individuals. To Minister of Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Sarawak Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, this is not something to be proud of. 'This is not good. We're on top of the list, but not for a good reason. 'The prevalence rate of vape use among Sarawakianz aged 15 years and above has also shown an increase. The NHMS report showed an increase in the prevalence rate of vape use from 4.5 per cent in 2019 to 7.3 per cent in 2023,' she said at the state-level 'National Anti-Drugs Day 2025' at Detar Putra of Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) on Saturday evening. In this regard, she said her ministry was ready to bring this issue up at the Sarawak Cabinet meeting in seeking direction on the next step of action. She also pointed out that there had been cases of illegal substance being added to vapes, with police statistics in 2023 reporting nine cases of illegal vape substances in Sarawak. 'We must do something to avoid this issue from becoming out of hand,' she stressed. On another matter, Fatimah said Sarawak recorded a total of 4,602 arrests involving various drug-related offences from January to April this year. 'What is worrying is the increase in relapse cases among drug addicts in Sarawak, where the number of recorded cases jumped by 120 per cent from 319 cases (last year) to 703 cases.' She added out of the 4,602 arrests, 2,804 involved youths – up from 1,392 youths' arrests recorded last year. 'This group (youths) are of the future of the state and the country. 'What's clear now is that prevention efforts must start earlier, at the school level with strong support from the teachers and parents,' she pointed out.
