Man accused of causing wrong-way crash on I-75 was driving without valid license, court records say
A man, accused of driving the wrong way on Interstate 75 and causing a crash, appeared in court Tuesday.

As reported on News Center 7 at 6, court records reveal that 46-year-old James Collins was driving without a valid driver's license on June 5, the day of the chase and crash.

Perry Township Police attempted to pull Collins over in a white GMC Sierra with no visible registration. Instead of stopping, police say Collins fled.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol's aviation unit followed the GMC Sierra as it drove all over Montgomery County as if he was being chased.
Law enforcement tried to deploy stop sticks to disable the vehicle, but they were unsuccessful. Then a passenger that was in the bed of the truck, identified as 49-year-old Thomas Downey, began throwing wood from the bed of the truck.
'We have officers flying past this vehicle while wood is being thrown at them, to get in front and start breaking down and locking down intersections,' Major Jeremy Roy said in a press conference Monday.
Collins then, according to law enforcement, began driving east in the westbound lanes of Route 35 before following a ramp the wrong way and driving south on northbound I-75.
'I believe some of these suspects are doing this intentionally to think that we're going to back off and we're just not going to do that anymore,' Roy said.
The wrong-way crash happened before law enforcement could stop Collins.
Collins is now in jail after entering a 'not guilty' plea in court, facing charges of vehicular assault, obstructing official business and failure to comply with an officer. All while driving without a valid driver's license.
Collins appeared in court from jail by video. The judge set his bond at $20,000 without the ability to pay 10% of the bond as bail, meaning he would have to pay the full amount in cash to be released and placed on electronic monitoring as his case moves forward.
Downey has not yet appeared in court and is not in police custody.

Shedeur Sanders' speeding ticket Tuesday for allegedly driving more than 100 mph wasn't his first since joining the Cleveland Browns. Police say that he was driving 101 mph in a 60 mph zone in his Dodge pickup truck on Highway 71 in the Cleveland suburb. Police released bodycam footage of the traffic stop that appeared to take place without notable incident. Per Sanders has a July 3 court date scheduled in Strongsville's Mayor's Court related to the second speeding infraction. Browns spokesman Peter John-Baptiste told that the team has addressed the infractions with Sanders. The Browns selected Sanders in the fifth round of April's NFL Draft out of Colorado. Man accused of raping woman in Kettering pleads guilty, gets 3 years in prison
Jun. 18—A man who was accused of raping a woman in a Kettering apartment building's laundry room has entered an Alford plea of guilty to some of his charges and was sentenced to prison. Tyre Otey, 29, entered an Alford plea of guilty to charges of gross sexual imposition and disrupting public services, both felonies, according to plea documents filed in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court. He was sentenced to an agreed-upon three years in prison, with a year and a half in prison for each charge. An Alford plea is a guilty plea where a defendant maintains that they are innocent but still accepts the consequences of the crime, often made as part of a plea agreement. Otey was also designated a Tier I sex offender, and will have to register his address every year for 15 years. One count of rape was dismissed as part of the agreement. Otey was charged after Kettering police responded to a 911 hang-up call on Oct. 9, 2024 at an apartment building in the 1700 block of East Dorothy Lane. While checking the building, officers found two people in the shared laundry room engaged in sexual conduct, a Kettering police blotter said. "Through further investigation, it was discovered that the involved female had dialed 911 for help while being raped," the blotter read. Otey allegedly took the cellphone from her when she tried to call 911 and threw it into a trash can, according to an affidavit filed in Kettering in Municipal Court. He was arrested and booked in the Montgomery County Jail, where remains at the time of writing.

Newark motorcyclist killed in early-morning crash on Brownsville Road in Hanover Township
A Newark man was killed in an early-morning motorcycle crash June 18 in Hanover Township, in southeastern Licking County, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Dylan Lee McPherson, 22, of Newark, was driving a 2016 Harley Davidson Street Glide motorcycle on Brownsville Road Southeast near Staddens Bridge Road Southeast, when he traveled off the right side road, hit a guardrail and overturned just after 6 a.m. June 18, according to a Highway Patrol news release. McPherson was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene, according to the Highway Patrol. The crash remains under investigation.
