Big Rock Blue Marlin boaters share their superstitions for luck
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. (WNCT) — Some boaters in the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament have their own superstitions to ensure good sailing.
Some boaters rules for good luck are:
Wearing the same shirt or pair of socks
'Each boat has its own little, little superstition, so to speak. You know, everybody wears colored socks and they may wear white socks and black socks,' weight master Randy Gregory said. 'Who knows? It's just crazy superstition. Yeah. Sometimes they make them bite, sometimes it doesn't.'
'My favorite one is I have a red big blue marlin sure that I love, and I have called striped marlin on the fly in Cabo San Lucas,' Big Rock board member Tommy Bennett said. 'I've called Blue Marlin on the floor in Guatemala wearing that shirt. And it is my my lucky fishing shirt.'
Throwing Oreo cookies and beer over the bow of the boat to feed the fish
'You take Oreo cookies over the bar You take them and you present them to the Billfish gods and you come in there like that and then, you know, you shake up some beers and you spray it off the stern,' weight master Randy Gregory said. 'You know, it kind of attracts the fish.'
Never bring bananas on the boat
'It's a really old wives tale. Bananas are not really easy, and they cause other fruit around them to rot. I think it dates back to colonial days,' research assistant at NC State Paul Rudershausen said. 'So you should definitely not take bananas on a boat. Especially on Friday the 13th.'

Texas A&M Star WR Boosts NIL Valuation in 2025
Texas A&M Star WR Boosts NIL Valuation in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Texas A&M's biggest offseason win for 2025 is the addition of former NC State wide receiver KC Concepcion, a dynamic playmaker expected to immediately become the Aggies' top offensive threat. With the departure of Ainais Smith to the NFL, Texas A&M lacked a true No. 1 receiver until Concepcion stepped in. Advertisement Known for his explosiveness after the catch, he averaged over 11 yards per reception during his standout 2023 season. Though his production dipped in 2024, the arrival of new offensive coordinator Collin Klein could reignite his performance in College Station. Former NC State Wolfpack wide receiver KC Concepcion.© Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports Concepcion brings more than just on-field value. According to On3's Pete Nakos, he has already secured $2.5 million in Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals, which bring to light both his talent and market appeal. His transfer also comes at a pivotal time, following the House v. NCAA settlement that allows Power Five programs to share over $20 million annually with athletes. Over two seasons at NC State, Concepcion tallied 1,299 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns, plus 356 rushing yards and two scores, showcasing his versatility. His presence gives starting quarterback Marcel Reed a reliable and electric target, significantly elevating Texas A&M's offensive potential for the 2025 season. NFL Draft Summer Scouting Report: Justin Joly, TE, NC State
Summer is here, and it is everyone's favorite time of the year, scouting time. Every year, we do Summer Scouting to preview college football for Vikings fans, but also give them an idea of names to follow and watch in the fall as needs pop up for Minnesota. Are we going to write about quarterbacks? You know it, but why? Because other NFL teams will draft them, just as they will draft every other position. It all matters whether these players end up on the Vikings, the Bears, or the Steelers. We write these so Vikings fans can be the most informed fans. So if you are still with us, enjoy our latest Summer Scouting report as we prepare you for the Fall. Player Information Player: Justin Joly School: NC State Height/Weight: 6-3/235 lbs. Player Background - 2-Star Recruit - Transfer from UConn - 2024 Preseason Mackey Award Watchlist Career Stats Heading into the 2025 Season - 117 Receptions - 1,489 Receiving Yards - 12.7 Yards Per Reception - 8 Touchdowns Notable PFF Numbers Heading into the 2025 Season - 73.5 PFF Receiving Grade - 62.4 PFF Blocking Grade - 6.2 Yards per Reception After Contact - 1.79 Yards Per Route Run - Average Depth of Target 8.6 Yards - 26 Contested Catches Player Traits - Good release off the line - Tracks the ball well in the air - Makes contested catches - Good burst and ball carrier vision - Footwork and hips allow separation Player Summary Justin Joly does not have the typical appearance of a tight end when you see him on film or on screen. He lines up both in-line and out, and NC State gets the most out of him that way. He demonstrates good movement abilities with and without the ball in his hands due to his footwork and hip speed. On top of that, the way he attacks the ball in the air and makes contested catches will make him a fun watch this fall and beyond. He may not be a top-end tight end prospect when the draft rolls around, but do not doubt his playmaking ability for a second.
