KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is scheduled to resume recording a statement this Thursday from an individual with the title Tan Sri, as part of investigations into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds for a highway construction project in the Klang Valley.
Its Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, when contacted, confirmed that the statement will be recorded at the individual's residence in the federal capital at 9am. MACC is scheduled to resume recording a statement this Thursday from an individual with the title Tan Sri, as part of investigations into the alleged misappropriation of sukuk funds for a highway construction project in the Klang Valley.
On June 11, the MACC recorded an initial statement from the individual over a six-hour period, which was temporarily halted due to health reasons.
Earlier, media reports stated that the MACC had seized various assets, including handbags, jewellery, luxury vehicles, watches, cash and high-end properties, collectively estimated at RM32 million, believed to belong to a highway concessionaire bearing the Tan Sri title. - BERNAMA

KOTA BHARU, June 21 (Bernama) -- The General Operations Force (GOF) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 19,000 kilogrammes of white rice from Thailand along Jalan Kampung Air Gatal, Tanah Merah, as part of the 'Op Taring Wawasan' operations yesterday. 'The seized rice, along with the trailer, is estimated to be worth RM426,000. The case has been handed over to the Kelantan Paddy and Rice Regulatory Authority for further action,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Paddy and Rice Act 1994. Meanwhile, Nik Ros Azhan said in a separate operation, his team also foiled an attempt to smuggle 11 cows after intercepting a lorry that was being driven suspiciously in Kampung Telaga Bata, Tumpat, last Thursday. 'An inspection found 11 cows in the back of the lorry, and the driver failed to produce any valid documentation for the livestock. The driver, a 28-year-old local man, was arrested,' he said. He added that the total value of the seizure, including the lorry, was estimated at RM151,000. The case has been handed over to the Kelantan Department of Veterinary Services for further action and is being investigated under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953. -- BERNAMA

CSO Platform for Reform: Make MACC fully independent to restore public trust

KUCHING (June 21): The government must establish a fully independent Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to carry out impartial investigations and prosecutions of all corruption cases, including those involving high-ranking officials, said CSO Platform for Reform. In a statement today, the coalition stressed that only a truly autonomous MACC can help restore and strengthen public confidence in Malaysia's anti-corruption efforts. It also called for a clear separation between the roles of the Attorney-General (AG) and the Public Prosecutor (PP), independent from the Prime Minister's Office, to ensure that prosecutorial decisions are made without political influence or interference. 'This essential structural reform will uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is carried out fairly and transparently. By distinctly separating these functions, both the AG and PP can perform their duties with full integrity, thereby strengthening the credibility and impartiality of Malaysia's legal system,' it said in a statement today. The call comes in response to the recent Kuala Lumpur High Court decision to grant former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on three money laundering charges related to SRC International, a former subsidiary of 1MDB. CSO Platform for Reform also called for a strong and unwavering commitment from all levels of government, including both state and federal authorities, to actively combat corruption in all its forms. It emphasised that the government must respect and protect the rights of all groups and individuals who peacefully demand anti-corruption measures through demonstrations and public assemblies. 'Despite his conviction and imprisonment on other related charges, this development reflects the complexities and procedural hurdles that can affect the timely and thorough prosecution of such cases. 'The use of DNAA in this context underscores concerns about the pace and effectiveness of legal proceedings in corruption trials, which can contribute to public skepticism and affect confidence in the justice system,' it explained. According to CSO Platform for Reform, corruption remains a widespread issue affecting all regions of the country, posing a serious threat to the health and stability of Malaysia's democratic system.
