Milner gets Brighton extension for 24th season with a Premier League record in sight
BRIGHTON, England (AP) — James Milner will get another chance to become the player with the most appearances in the Premier League era.
The 39-year-old midfielder, who is 15 appearances short of Gareth Barry's record (653), has signed a one-year contract extension with Brighton.
Milner sustained a serious knee injury that limited him to just four league games last season. He made his 638th appearance on the last day of the season, coming off the bench in a 4-1 victory over Tottenham.
'Last season he wasn't able to help the team on the pitch as much as he would have liked, but around the squad his experience is invaluable, especially for the younger players,' Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler said in the team's announcement Friday.
'He's a great guy to have in our environment, who is always there for me and the team,' said Hurzeler, who is seven years younger than Milner. 'I'm looking forward to working with him again.'
Milner, who will turn 40 in January, made his debut at age 16 for Leeds in November 2002.
He's entering his record-extending 24th season overall and third at Brighton — he made 15 league appearances in the 2023-24 season — after eight years at Liverpool. Milner has also played for Manchester City, Aston Villa and Newcastle.
Milner made 61 international appearances for England from 2009-16.

Minjee Lee has 1st bogey-free round at windy Women's PGA to take 4-shot lead into final day
FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Two-time major champion Minjee Lee took over the lead with the first bogey-free round for anyone during a windy week at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship, a 3-under 69 in the third round Saturday to move four strokes ahead of Jeeno Thitikul. Lee got to 6-under 210 after beginning the round three strokes behind Thitikul, the world's No. 2-ranked player who led alone at the end of each of the first two days. Lee, the Australian who lives in nearby Irving, went in front with a 2-foot par at the 405-yard 12th hole when Thitikul had her second consecutive bogey, and fourth of the day on way to a round of 76. Far from tree-lined Sahalee outside Seattle where the Women's PGA was last year, Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco is much more open and exposed to the ever-present Texas wind that was the strongest it had been all week. There were gusts of more than 30 mph Saturday, with much the same forecast for the final round. Temperatures were again in the mid-90s. Nelly Korda, the world's top-ranked player, described the conditions as 'just brutal' after her round of 72 that began with back-to-back bogeys but ended with two birdies down the stretch. She had five birdies and five bogeys and is tied for sixth at 2-over 218. Lee and Thitikul were the only players still under par. Lexi Thompson (75), after a triple-bogey start, was tied for third at 1 over with Hye Jin Choi (72) and Miyu Yamashita (73). Thitikul had the only birdie Saturday among the 78 players on the 172-yard, par-3 eighth hole, which generally plays downwind and where only 29% of the tee shots all week have stayed on the green. That 13-foot birdie was her first of the day and got her to 5 under, two strokes ahead of Lee. But Thitikul's lead was gone after back-to-back bogeys on the back side. She pushed a 4-foot par chance past the hole at the 383-yard 11th, her first miss inside 5 feet this week. Then her drive at the 417-yard 12th hole went way right into a penalty area, and Lee went ahead to stay. Lee, who won the 2022 U.S. Women's Open and 2021 British Women's Open, was steady Saturday with eight consecutive pars before a 4-foot birdie at the 487-yard ninth hole. Her other birdies were an 18-footer at the 515-yard, par-5 14th and a 1 1/2-foot at the bunker-surrounded 236-yard par 4 15th hole. Thitikul had her third bogey in a four-hole stretch when three-putting from 50 feet at No. 14. Semi-retired Thompson, in the second-to-last group, hit her tee shot into the fairway on the 517-yard par-5 first hole, a 207-yard drive into the wind. But she topped her second shot that went only 117 yards, indicating to her caddie that the wind had her off balance, and then shanked her next shot right, a ball that was never found for a penalty on way to triple bogey. She followed with another bogey on the second hole, but had two birdies and only one bogey the rest of the way. Thompson, playing for only the seventh time in 16 tournaments this season, won her only major in the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship, but her 13 top-five finishes in majors since 2013 are the most by any player and among her 20 top-10 finishes in those events. LPGA rookie Rio Takeda opened with a bogey 6 at the first hole after starting the round tied with with Lee for second place. Takeda later had a pair of double bogeys, including the 315-yard par-4 7th hole where her drive wound up in the upper face of a greenside bunker that left her with an awkward stance and unable to get the ball out on the first try. Acuña reaches base 4 times and Braves beat Marlins 7-0
MIAMI (AP) — Ronald Acuña Jr. had two hits, walked twice and drove in a run as the Atlanta Braves beat the Miami Marlins 7-0 on Saturday. Drake Baldwin homered while Marcell Ozuna hit an RBI double and singled for the Braves, who have won seven of nine after falling to a season-low 10 games under .500 on June 10. Braves starter Grant Holmes (4-6) overcame control problems and pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up five hits while walking five and striking out five. Enyel De Los Santos, Dylan Lee and Rafael Montero completed the shutout. Acuña, the 2023 NL MVP, has reached safely in 25 of 26 games since being reinstated from the injured list on May 23. Atlanta struck quickly against Miami starter Eury Pérez (0-2) with Ozuna's run-scoring double in the first. Fleetwood seizes control after Scheffler blowup and leads Travelers by 3
CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Tommy Fleetwood avoided the blunders by Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas, never missing a fairway Saturday and seizing on the good scoring conditions for a 7-under 63 for a three-shot lead going into the final round of the Travelers Championship. At stake for Fleetwood is a chance to add a PGA Tour title to a resume that includes seven European titles, three Ryder Cup appearances and a regular fixture among the top 25 for the last two years. The immediate challengers at steamy TPC River Highlands are New England's favorite son and Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley (63) and Russell Henley, who had a 61 one day after calling a penalty on himself when he wasn't entirely sure it was one. Missing are Scheffler and Thomas, both tied for the 36-hole lead with Fleetwood. Scheffler had a 29th birthday to forget. Thousands of spectators around the first tee serenaded him. He responded with a triple bogey, the first time he has done that to start a round in his PGA Tour career. The world's No. 1 player never quite recovered, posting a 72, the fifth time in 55 rounds this year he was over par. Scheffler was nine shots behind. Thomas, already a winner at Hilton Head this year, was still in range of Fleetwood when he hit his tee shot onto the railroad tracks left of the par-5 13th, the club slipping out his hand. And then it got worse. He twice watched chips up a slope to a green that ran away from him come up short and roll back down the hill. He missed a 6-foot putt and took a quadruple-bogey 9. Thomas shot 73 and was 10 behind. Without the wind — only extreme heat — the course average was right about 68. The final group of Scheffler and Thomas combined to go 5-over par. Fleetwood was in such control of his game that he didn't realize until after the round that he didn't miss a fairway, key to setting up birdie chances. He also made eagle on the 13th hole for the second day, giving him three eagles for the week. They don't hand out crystal for that at the Travelers, only red umbrellas. But it allowed Fleetwood to get some separation for Henley and Bradley going into Sunday. Fleetwood, a 34-year-old from England, was at 16-under 194. 'I'm on top of a lot of stat lines for people that haven't won on the PGA Tour, so to always be a No. 1 at something is always nice,' he said with a laugh. 'Yeah, of course I would love to win on the PGA Tour. I think it's like an element of your career that everybody wants, and I of course want it. I haven't, this year especially, I don't feel like I've given myself … I've given myself a back-end chance a couple of times this year, but I've not been in contention. So this is like my first real chance, so I'm really excited about that and looking forward to it.' Jason Day ran off three straight birdies on the back nine to salvage a 67 and was five shots back. No one else was closer than eight shots of Fleetwood. Scheffler hasn't finished out of the top 10 since March and remarkably he ended the day with a birdie for a tie eighth. The start was a shocker. He drove left into the 5-inch rough and hit wedge into a front bunker with a decent lie. But he caught all ball and sent it over the green, leaving him a tough pitch up the slope and over a mound toward the hole. The first pitch came up short and rolled back down into the rough. He hit a flop to 15 feet and two-putted for triple bogey, his first on the tour since the BMW Championship last August. Bradley, whose name has not vanished from Ryder Cup consideration as a player, won the Travelers two years ago and cleared a major hurdle trying to perform before New England fans, now chanting, 'U-S-A! U-S-A!' at him at every turn.
