PGA Tour Announces Unfortunate Zach Johnson News Before Charles Schwab Challenge

Yahoo22-05-2025

The PGA Championship concluded this Sunday, with Scottie lifting the Wanamaker Trophy at 11-under. Up next, he's set to tee off at the Charles Schwab Challenge beginning May 22. Before that, PGA Tour announced unfortunate news about a fellow golfer.
Zach Johnson has decided to withdraw from the upcoming tournament; the PGA Tour announced on Monday that the $49.8 million golfer will be replaced by Camilo Villegas.

Will Zalatoris has also chosen to forego his spot and will be replaced by Dylan Wu. Meanwhile, brothers Rasmus and Nicolai Højgaard have withdrawn and will be replaced by Akshay Bhatia and William Mouw, respectively.

Matt Wallace, a two-time DP World Tour winner and recent Corales Puntacana champion on the PGA Tour, has been granted an unrestricted sponsor exemption into the tournament.
Colonial Country Club's tree-lined, narrow fairways and 29 strategically placed bunkers reward technical precision and penalize errant tee shots, making it one of the Tour's purest ball-striking tests. Winners here receive 500 FedExCup points.

Strong performances at Colonial often lead to improved priority ranking, as top-10 finishers not only earn substantial points but also qualify for the Aon Next 10, granting access to premier events like the Memorial Tournament.
Recent renovations, including a $20 million restoration to recapture Perry Maxwell's classic design, have preserved the course's strategic challenges while modernizing greens and bunker complexes.
Besides the World No. 1, defending champion Davis Riley, major winner Hideki Matsuyama, long hitter Maverick McNealy, crafty shotmaker Tommy Fleetwood, and former Masters champ Jordan Spieth will also be participating in the challenge.

Rory McIlroy Sends Five-Word Message About His Game at Travelers Championship

Rory McIlroy Sends Five-Word Message About His Game at Travelers Championship originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After struggling to build on the high of his Masters win that completed the career Grand Slam, Rory McIlroy produced some encouraging signs in the first round of the Travelers Championship on Thursday. Advertisement McIlroy shot a six-under-par 64 at TPC at River Highlands, a number that sees him trail Scottie Scheffler and Austin Eckroat by two strokes after the opening 18 holes. The Northern Irishman has regularly skipped press conferences in recent weeks while conceding he has struggled for motivation in the wake of his victory at Augusta. But, after finishing the US Open with a three-under-par final round at Oakmont, McIlroy looked much more at ease as he put himself in a strong position to challenge for a 30th PGA Tour title. Rory McIlroy plays his shot from the first tee during the first round of the Travelers Championship golf Streicher-Imagn Images Speaking to NBC Sports after his round, McIlroy was asked how far away he is from the player who won The Players Championship and The Masters. McIlroy replied: "Not far away at all. Advertisement "I've always said when your game does feel far away, it's probably never that far away. I found a good feeling with my swing and with the driver that weekend before US Open. And that's sort of the thought that I'm going with into these next few months.I definitely have seen a little bit of an uptick in form and quality of shots since then. On what worked for him in the first round of the Travelers, McIlroy said: "I feel like I played well on Sunday at Oakmont. I felt like I was a little bit of a confidence builder coming into this week. Today was just a continuation of that. "Felt like I hit the ball well off the tee for the most part. And when you do that around this course, you're gonna give yourself plenty of opportunities. "Oakmont was a tough week. Canadian Open before that was a tough week. I think for me finding something that works off the tee, that when that happens in my game, I think it sort of just bleeds through everything else and I feel a lot more comfortable with where my game is. That's what sort of happened. Advertisement "I feel like I honestly turned the corner that weekend off Canada when I went home to Florida, did a couple of good practice sessions. And certainly went to Oakmont with a better idea of where my game was. "Unfortunately it just took a few days to get to where I wanted it to be. But it was nice to see some improvements on Sunday. And as I said, it's good to see a carry through into this week." With The Open Championship around the corner at Royal Portrush, McIlroy's words should be ominous ones for his rivals as he seeks to win the final major of the year next month. Weather Catches PGA Tour Golfers 'Off Guard' at Travelers Championship on Friday

Weather Catches PGA Tour Golfers 'Off Guard' at Travelers Championship on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 Travelers Championship, the final signature event of this PGA Tour season, is well underway at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. With defending champion and current World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler still in contention after Thursday's opening round, all eyes are on the leaderboard heading into a critical Friday. Big names like Rory McIlroy, Viktor Hovland, and Collin Morikawa are all scheduled to tee off throughout the day, hoping to make a move in the second round. Advertisement But as the action picks up on Friday, so has the wind, throwing a surprise element into the mix. The course, typically known for low scores, is battling nature's interference. Gusty northwest winds have taken over TPC River Highlands, with sustained speeds around 15 mph and gusts reaching up to 40 mph. Justin Thomas chips onto the tenth green during the first round of the Travelers Championship golf Streicher-Imagn Images The breezy conditions are a result of a storm system that passed through the region Thursday night and are expected to continue throughout the day. Even the pros weren't prepared. Justin Thomas, who teed off at 10:15 a.m. alongside Hideki Matsuyama, was taken aback by the severity. 'Wow … I saw Akshay on TV and his divots were flying all over the place,' he said, reacting to Akshay Bhatia's early-round battle with the gusts. What was expected to be another low-scoring Friday now looks uncertain. The wind has already caught both players and caddies off guard, making club selection and course management trickier than usual. Advertisement With big names like Cantlay, Homa, Day, and Fleetwood lined up for later tee times, the rest of the field will need to adjust quickly or risk falling behind in one of the year's most pivotal events.
