Ernesto ‘Tito' Bessone returns to motorsport at the age of 67

Indian Express03-05-2025

Argentine driver Ernesto 'Tito' Bessone is the only driver in the country's history to win atleast one title in all four of the to categories of the country. He won Turismo Carretera (2003), TC2000 (1996), Top Race (2004), and Turismo Nacional (Class 3, 2003).
However, at the age of 67, Bessone is returning back to compete making another record. He becomes the oldest driver to compete in a top-level national competition, surpassing the age of 66 at which, coincidentally, his father retired from racing in 1989, four years after becoming the oldest champion by winning the Class 2 of the TN.
'It's a huge emotion to return to TC2000. In 1985 I had the chance to witness the change from the Renault 18 to the Renault Fuego and the Ford Taunus to the Ford Sierra and it produced a great phenomenon in the category. Now, after 40 years, I have the chance to experience again this radical change in car models with the arrival of the SUVs and it's an honour to be part of it,' said Tito while talking to Clarin.
He will be part of the El Halcón Motorsport and had tested the Next Gen Nivus of the TC2000.
'I'm going to do it with great commitment, I'm going to give everything I have to be at the best level on a track that I really like like Oberá. I want to thank the category for making this project possible and the sponsors for trusting me,' added 'Tito' ahead of the debut of the new 500-horsepower SUVs designed especially for the category with models from brands such as Chevrolet, Honda, Toyota, Fiat, Nissan and the aforementioned Volkswagen.
Bessone's last race in the TC2000 was on August 21, 2011 , as a guest of Leandro Carducci in the 8th Edition of the 200 km of Buenos Aires. This time, he will be the protagonist, the 1996 champion with a Ford Escort, host of 263 races (among which he achieved 28 victories, 25 pole positions and 31 lap records) and who has just restored the historic Renault Fuego Coupé that he made win for the first time in 1985, the same year in which he won on his debut day in the TC (on December 22 in Buenos Aires).
Who is Ernesto 'Tito' Bessone?
One of the most revered names of the Argentine motorsports, Bessone was born on 3rd April,1958. He made his motorsport debut in the Turismo Nacional in 1979, driving a Peugeot. He won his first title in 1983 in the now-defunct Club Argentino de Pilotos (Argentine Drivers' Club), driving a Datsun 280 ZX, and repeated the feat the following year. He also won the championship in that category in 1988, driving a Nissan 300 ZX.
In 1995, driving a Ford, he won the Supercart title, a category that used the same vehicles as Turismo Carretera, but adapted for racing on racetracks. And in 1996, he won the 2000 Turismo Competición championship driving a Ford Escort. In TC2000, he totaled 263 races and 28 victories.

'I want to tell you something, so since he arrived (in January), the (last) three or four months with the lads, at the end of the training session, he was practising the free-kicks alone, with the 'keeper, with the wall,' Guardiola told reporters. 'The others, they didn't practise, he was practising and practising, and work pays off. 'So at the end, he had the courage, the quality. When you practise, you know, it's like golf or like basketball, as much you practise free shots, the more chances you have.' More from Football 'A really good performance,' said Gundogan. 'I think we had our moments in the first half, and then also the second part of the second half. 'I think the result speaks for itself, and in the end, fully deserved.' Man City underlines squad depth in win over Al-Ain City manager Pep Guardiola illustrated the depth of his squad by making 11 changes, and Gundogan made the most of his start by opening the scoring with a chipped cross that floated over the head of Al-Ain keeper Khalid Eisa and into the net. Al-Ain were showing more ambition than they had in their 5-0 loss to Juventus and winger Nassim Chadli had a chance to equalise in the 15th minute but City keeper Stefan Ortega Moreno managed to push it wide. Etcheverri, making his first start for City, doubled the lead in the 27th minute when he bent a free kick around a poorly-placed defensive wall and past the hapless Eisa. Haaland almost immediately created a chance for himself by dispossessing the final defender but he took the ball too wide to get around Eisa and his shot went across the goal. The big Norwegian went through on goal again in the 41st minute before again angling his shot wide of the far post but made no mistake from the spot with his third chance to score in first-half stoppage time. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Egyptian Ramy Rabia wrestled Manuel Akanji to the ground from a corner and after VAR informed the referee of the offence, Haaland sent Eisa to the left and banged the ball into the right-hand corner for his 32nd goal of the season. City kept up the pressure in the second half and forward Matheus Nunes turned and volleyed the ball past the post just after the hour mark before Eisa finally showed his quality by twice denying Haaland from close range. Chadli had another chance in the 69th minute but fired his shot high over the bar and Gundogan soon ended any hopes of a comeback with his second goal. Bernardo Silva drifted across the edge of the box before drilling a pass towards the penalty spot and Gundogan got a great first touch to take him past the defence before lifting the ball over Eisa. Bobb cut inside the box onto his left foot to beat Eisa at his near post eight minutes from time before his fellow winger Cherki sealed the rout with a clinical finish from the edge of the box. Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola lauded teenage attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri's commitment to training after he scored a remarkable free-kick in the Club World Cup victory over Al Ain on Sunday. The 19-year-old netted City's second goal in a 6-0 thrashing of the UAE team in Atlanta, propelling the Premier League club into the last 16 of FIFA's expanded competition. Echeverri, nicknamed the 'Little Devil', joined from Argentine giants River Plate and made his City debut in May during the FA Cup final defeat by Crystal Palace. Guardiola substituted him at half-time for Phil Foden, later explaining the playmaker had sustained a minor knock. 'It was a fantastic goal, he's an incredible player in small spaces," continued the City coach. 'Unfortunately, he couldn't continue to half-time because of a problem with the ankle, but yeah, he was truly good in the first minutes, and… he made a fantastic goal, the free kick was really, really, really good." With two late goals from Oscar Bobb and Rayan Cherki, City nearly overtook Juventus at the top of Group G. They are level on points with the Old Lady but trail in terms of goals scored. To secure the top spot and potentially avoid Real Madrid in the last 16, City must beat Juve on Thursday in Orlando. 'With one more goal, we'd have two options. Now we have just one, maybe it's better," said Guardiola. 'What's important is that we are in the next phase… we will face top, top teams sooner or later, so it doesn't matter. 'We will eventually see the Brazilian teams, European top-class teams, so it's not a big concern." (With AFP Inputs)
