Day after rapping Tamil Nadu, Supreme Court says ADGP's suspension is in order
Representative Image NEW DELHI: A day after intensely questioning Tamil Nadu's decision to suspend additional DGP H M Jayaram being probed for his role in an alleged kidnapping of a youth, Supreme Court Thursday found M K Stalin govt's administrative step well couched in All-India Service Rules that governs IPS officers. On behalf of TN, senior advocate Siddharth Dave told a bench of Justices Ujjal Bhuyan & Manmohan that Jayaram's suspension was not influenced by Madras HC's order to arrest him in the alleged kidnapping case, in which it was alleged that his vehicle was used to whisk away the teen from his home after his brother married a woman of another caste and her parents lodged a complaint. Dave said AIS empowers a state govt to place an IAS or IPS officer under suspension if he is being investigated or facing trial in a criminal case. "We did not want to give the impression that the law will be applied differently to high-ranked officers. Once the probe is complete, and depending on its outcome, a decision will be taken on whether to continue the suspension or revoke it," he said. On nudging of the bench, Dave took instructions from state govt and told the court that TN would have no objection if the probe into the case is transferred from local police to CB-CID. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo The bench also ordered for transfer of investigation to CB-CID. While staying the HC order for action against Jayaram, the bench said though it would not interfere with the suspension order, it was open to the IPS officer to challenge its legality in an appropriate forum. It also requested the Madras HC chief justice to assign hearing of the cases related to the kidnapping incident to a judge other than the one who had passed orders for action against Jayaram. On Monday, HC's Justice P Velmurugan directed police to arrest Jayaram saying "a strong message should go to public that no one is above law". This order was passed during the hearing of an anticipatory bail plea of MLA K V Kuppam, who is also an accused in the case. HC had refused relief to the MLA and ordered him to cooperate with the investigation into the kidnapping case.

ASI transfers officer, DMK and Tamil Nadu parties cry foul
CHENNAI: Archaeologist K Amarnath Ramakrishna, who first excavated Keezhadi in Madurai and whose findings triggered a war of words between the BJP-led centre and the Tamil Nadu government, faced his 12th transfer in his 21 years of service as the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) relieved him from his post of Director (Antiquity) on Tuesday. Ramakrishna, who was serving as the Director (Antiquity) and as Director of the National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities (NMMA), will henceforth be the director of only the NMMA. While TN parties have been asserting that the Keezhadi report provides evidence to indicate that the Sangam Age — which shows the antiquity of Tamil — could be pushed back to 800 BCE, making it around 300-500 years older than what was earlier thought, the union government had demanded more data, evidence and proof to acknowledge that claim. Reacting to Ramakrishna's transfer on Tuesday, the ruling DMK has alleged that 'it is a ploy to withdraw the (Keezhadi) report and dilute the findings'. The senior archaeologist, who is facing his third transfer since being promoted to the rank of a director, will have to shift from his office at the ASI's headquarters in New Delhi to the office of NMMA located in Greater Noida, sources said. Interestingly, H A Naik, the officer who had directed Ramakrishna to rework his report on the first two phases of excavation in Keezhadi (located in Sivaganga district near Madurai) with additional information regarding the dating, has been given additional charge as director (Antiquity). It was Naik's letter that kicked up a controversy last month as the DMK and other TN parties opposed to BJP had alleged this letter, which was sent around two-and-a-half years after Ramakrishna submitted his report, is a delaying tactic by the centre from bringing out the excavation results to the public domain.

Promising pacer Deepesh breaks into Indian under-19 squad
Having come close last year, Tamil Nadu's D. Deepesh finally made it to the India under-19 squad on Monday when he was announced as one of the injury replacements for the tour of England later this month. The 17-year-old pacer is a chip off the old block, the son of former Tamil Nadu player V. Devendran. An opener, Devendran was the third-highest run-getter alongside S. Anirudha in the inaugural Syed Musthaq Ali T20 (2007) and was instrumental in the team's triumph before he joined the now-defunct Indian Cricket League. Speaking about his son, a proud Devendran said, 'We were disappointed when he couldn't be a part of the (u-19) Asia Cup last year (Deepesh was one of the standbys), because he didn't receive his visa on time. But I am glad he got a break now and want to thank H. Shankar (Secretary of Chengalpattu district team) for his unflinching support.' The 47-year-old, who has been Deepesh's coach, added: 'He is a good batter, but I told him to become a fast bowler because he has pace. Even if he was a bit wayward, I told him not to compromise pace because control can be learnt.' It is something Deepesh, who clocks above 130kph, says he has realised and also credited Sandeep Warrier for guiding him when he was part of TN's Vijay Hazare squad last year. 'I was dropped from the u-19 team last year after a poor performance in the semis. Sandy anna found out what I was trying and asked me not to slow my run-up or pace. He felt I could play at a higher level if I continued to back my strengths. That gave me a lot of confidence.' 'I am thrilled to have finally got the chance. I want to do well in every opportunity I get,' added Deepesh.

Marginal dip in TN NEET show; MBBS cut-off may fall
CHENNAI: The number of students who had qualified in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET)-UG in Tamil Nadu recorded a marginal dip of 2.2 percentage points in the results declared by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on Saturday. Of the 1.36 lakh TN students who had appeared for the test this year, 76,181 have qualified (56.1%), a tad lower than the last year's 58.3%. Since there is a drop in score across the country, with the top mark being 686, the lowest since 2019, the cut-off for MBBS admission may drop by 60 to 70 marks. The drop in number of qualifying candidates and failure of Tamil Nadu students to make it to the top 25 ranks, may set tongues wagging as all the TN political parties, except the BJP, have opposed the test saying that it puts poor, rural students at a disadvantage and the centre must give exemption to TN students from the topper from Tamil Nadu, S Soorya Narayanan of Tirunelveli district, secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 27. Last year, P Rajaneesh from the state was among the 17 students who secured first rank by scoring a perfect 720 out of 720. In 2023, J Prabanjan from TN shared AIR 1 with another student from Andhra Pradesh by scoring five students from Tamil Nadu secured a spot among the top 25 in 2023. Besides Soorya Narayanan, five more students made it to the top 100 AIR this year, compared to 10 students in 2024. In a first in past five years, TN sees drop in number of state students appearing for NEET The other five are Abhineet Nagaraj (AIR 50), GS Pugazhendhi (AIR 61), KS Hruthik Vijaya Raja (AIR 63), AJ Rakesh (AIR 78), and G Prajan Srivari (AIR 88). Experts attributed the dip in scores to the increased difficulty of this year's question paper. 'While many students scored perfect marks (nationwide) last year, the top score this year was just 686. Although the decline was seen across the country, the impact is more pronounced in TN,' said a NEET coaching expert.
