DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado Department of Education presented a total of 695 performance awards to 71 districts and 346 schools during an event on Friday.
The event celebrated schools and districts that received awards for the 2023 and 2024 school years, in categories recognizing academic achievement and student growth, among other things.

'Behind every one of these awards is a story of hard work, heart, and hope,' State Board of Education Chair Rebecca McClellan said in a statement. 'These schools and districts are shining examples of what's possible when educators, students, and families come together with a shared purpose—to help every child thrive.
The awards were presented by McClellan, Vice Chair Yazmin Navarro, Board member Lisa Escárcega, Board member Kathy Gebhardt and Colorado Education Commissioner Susana Córdova.

The awards seem to follow a positive trend of upward growth for education in Colorado, with data released in January from the 2023-2024 school year showing the state's four-year high school graduation rate and student drop-out rates improved.
CDE noted at the time that the growth was not equal among all student groups, with students experiencing homelessness, students from migrant families, students with disabilities, multilingual students, students in foster care and male students not reaching the statewide graduation rate of 84.2%.

Four schools from Colorado were also designated as 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education last September, including DSST: Cedar High School in Denver, Mesa View Elementary School in Grand Junction, Skyview Middle School in Pueblo West and Zach Elementary School in Fort Collins. The schools were also presented with awards at Friday's event.

National parks will be free to enter on Thursday: Here's why

DENVER (KDVR) — Entrance fees to all 63 of the nation's national parks will be waived on Thursday as the National Park Service commemorates Juneteenth. The day is known by many names — Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day, Jubilee Day — but the reason to celebrate it remains the same throughout: Commemoration of the day that the last African Americans learned they were no longer enslaved people. President Abraham Lincoln had already signed the Emancipation Proclamation, which became official as of Jan. 1, 1863, but African-descended people in Galveston, Texas, learned of the proclamation years later on June 19, 1865 — when a Union general led soldiers into town with the news that the Civil War was over and enslaved people were free. In light of the holiday, fees to enter all national parks in the U.S. will be waived. Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 with legislation signed by former President Biden. 'All Americans can feel the power of this day, and learn from our history,' said at the time. It was the first new national holiday in nearly 40 years, the New York Times reported, since Martin Luther King's birthday became a holiday in 1983.

When is Son's Day? When is Daughter's Day? Here's when to celebrate family 2025

Mother's and Father's days have passed officially, and the children are ready to be celebrated too. While both holidays have a month of their own to celebrate, Daughter's and Son's days are both celebrated in September. These holidays, although not traditionally observed to the same level as the spring holidays, are still great days to celebrate with your family. In addition to days for daughters and sons, the year has not passed on Sister's Day – sorry bros, going to have to wait until May 24 – which will arrive in August. However, parents don't need to be discouraged either, as Parents' Day is just over a month away. Here are the upcoming family holidays for the rest of the year. Parents' Day occurs annually on the fourth Sunday of July, making this year's holiday on Sunday, July 27, 2025. According to the National Day Archives, former President Bill Clinton got some headway on the holiday after signing a bill in 1994 that emphasized the significance of parents in family life. Sister's Day is celebrated annually on the first Sunday of August, making this year's holiday on Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025. The day has an unknown origin, according to National Day Archives. The website suggests that appropriate ways to celebrate include spending time with your sister, whether that be a relative or someone with whom you share a sense of sisterhood. Before we get to separate holidays for sons and daughters, they have one joint holiday on Aug. 11, 2025. The holiday is celebrated annually on Aug. 11. Daughter's Day is celebrated on Sept. 25 annually, making this year's holiday on Thursday, September 25, 2025. National Daughter's Day celebrates daughters around the world. According to the National Day Archives, the holiday was created to 'erase the stigma in some countries attached to having a girl instead of a boy child,' and now is celebrated to cherish the gift of daughters. Son's Day has two days to celebrate. The first is annually on March 4 and the second on Sept. 28. The second occurrence falls on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025. It's unclear why there are two days to celebrate sons. Both holidays came about in the age of the internet, and some choose to blame social media for causing the double day. RiNo rhino name unveiled after community voting ends

DENVER (KDVR) — The two-week-long voting process to name the River North neighborhood rhino has finished, and the final name has been selected by popular vote from the Denver public. The 30-foot-tall, 22,000-pound, climbable statue will no longer be known as the RiNo rhino and will officially be known as Rhingo the rhino. Did you feel it? 2.9 magnitude earthquake recorded in Colorado The statue was unveiled for the first time on Thursday, alongside the announcement of the new name by Denver City Councilman Darrell Watson. At the end of voting, nearly 1,500 people in the community voted on the name of the rhino. The vote was put on by joint venture partners Golub & Company and FORMATIV. 'Before full buildout of the entire 17-acre site, we want people to feel like Denargo Market is a destination worth visiting,' said Sean Campbell, CEO of FORMATIV. 'The rhino is our first big step in prioritizing public elements for locals and visitors to interact with. Whether you're climbing its sides, snapping a photo, or exploring our new parks and river activation, the rhino will welcome you to Denargo Market as a landmark that will be enjoyed for generations to come.' Why RiNo and LoDo aren't listed in Denver's neighborhoods The public will not be able to climb on Rhingo yet as more than four acres of public parks, plazas and recreational spaces open at Denargo Market. For more information on the project and Rhingo, visit the Denargo Market website. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
