CONROE, Texas - A man has been arrested after a fiery car crash in Conroe that killed a 3-year-old girl on Sunday, police say.
According to the Monday release from the Conroe Police Department, the suspect, 55-year-old Donald Carson, caused the crash while driving under the influence. The crash also injured a 26-year-old mother and her 5-year-old daughter.
The backstory
Around 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, Conroe Fire responded to the crash on I-45 North near the San Jacinto River and north of FM 1488.
A blue Honda Civic had broken down on the shoulder, reports said, and was struck by a white Toyota Camry, which Monday's release says was driven by Carson.
Monday's release clarified that Carson had been traveling in the HOV lane when he veered into the inside shoulder and hit the Camry from behind.
Crews arrived to find both cars engulfed in flames, reports said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, and worked to save the four occupants of the two vehicles. Monday's release says bystanders also assisted in the rescue.
The mother and child who survived the crash suffered third-degree burns and other injuries, police say, and were taken to a nearby hospital. The 3-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
What we know
Carson was taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries following the crash, police said.
During an investigation by the vehicular crimes unit from the Mongomery County District Attorney's Office, who responded to the scene, Carson reportedly showed signs of impairment after the crash.
Monday's release says Carson has been charged with intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault. All three charges are classified as felonies.
Carson will be booked into the Montgomery County Jail once he is released from the hospital, the police say.

Family members identified the 3-year-old girl who was killed in the crash as Camiria. Her mother, Shavhon White, and her sister, Chloe, are still in the hospital.

Teen girl killed when boozed up wrong-way driver launches overturned car into tree on Long Island: cops
A boozed-up wrong-way driver flipped his car and slammed into a tree on Long Island Sunday night, killing a 19-year-old woman and injuring six other passengers, authorities said. Luis Gonzalo Barrionuevo-Fuertes, a former East Hampton High School graduate, was allegedly behind the wheel of a Toyota Camry while driving in the wrong direction on Old Stone Highway in East Hampton when he swerved to avoid slamming into another car around 7:30 p.m. The car overturned and struck a tree, killing 19-year-old passenger Scarleth Urgiles, East Hampton police said. The alleged drunk driver was in court Tuesday. NBC New York The East Hampton High School student was pronounced dead at the scene. Another six passengers whose ages ranged between 15 and 19 and were locals were rushed to nearby hospitals with injuries. East Hampton High School principal Sara Smith called the crash a 'profound tragedy' and noted Urgiles and other passengers attended the school. His lawyer, Melissa Aguanno, told The Post she anticipates the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office will go forward with upgraded charges at some point. Man, 46, killed when his motorcycle collided with a car
A 46-year-old motorcyclist was killed on June 16 after his motorcycle collided with a car near Magnolia, Delaware State Police said. Police have not named the Felton-area motorist. The incident occurred about 8 p.m. as the motorcyclist was northbound on Walnut Shade Road approaching Douglas Fir Road. This is not a four-way stop.
