A court in Paris on Tuesday found French actor Gerard Depardieu guilty of sexually assaulting two women on a film set in 2021 and handed him an 18-month suspended prison sentence.
His lawyer said Depardieu would be appealing the court decision.
In one of the highest-profile #MeToo cases to come before judges in France, Depardieu, a towering figure of French cinema, had repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.
But judge Thierry Donard said Depardieu's explanation of events had been unconvincing.
One of the two plaintiffs, Amelie K, a set decorator, had told the court the actor had groped her all over her body as he trapped her between his legs and made explicit sexual comments.
"He touched everything, including my breasts," she told the court.
"I was terrified, he was laughing."
The presiding judge said two witnesses corroborated her account whilst Depardieu had been contradictory in his own accounts.
The #MeToo protest movement over sexual violence has struggled to gain the same traction in France as in the United States, though there are signs that social attitudes towards sexual assault may be changing. (Reuters)

Twenty killed in suicide bombing at Damascus church
Twenty killed in suicide bombing at Damascus church Civil defence members inspect the damage after a blast rocked the Mar Elias Church. Photo: Reuters At least 20 people were killed and dozens injured in a suicide bombing at the Mar Elias Church in Syria's capital Damascus on Sunday, health authorities and security sources said. It was the first suicide bombing in Damascus since Bashar al-Assad was toppled by an Islamist-led rebel insurgency in December. Syria's interior ministry said the suicide bomber was a member of Islamic State. He entered the church, opened fire and then detonated his explosive vest, a ministry statement added. A security source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said two men were involved in the attack, including the one who blew himself up. A priest at the church said the congregation had heard shooting outside before two people entered with explosive belts and detonated them during the Sunday Mass. Islamic State has been behind several attempted attacks on churches in Syria since Assad's fall, but this was the first to succeed, another security source told Reuters. Syria's state news agency cited the health ministry as saying that 52 people were also injured in the blast. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who led the offensive against Assad before taking over in January for a transitional phase, has repeatedly said he will protect minorities. (Reuters)
