Yorkshire teens win in BAFTA Young Game Designer Competition
Two teenagers from Yorkshire have scooped prizes at a national competition for young video game designers.13-year-old Thiago, from Sheffield, and 14-year-old Tanisi, from Leeds, were crowned winners in the BAFTA Young Game Designer Competition.They were selected from 52 finalists aged between 10 and 18, who each created a game or a game concept.Their work will be showcased at the Power Up video game exhibition in London, Manchester, and Bradford, as well as at a BAFTA showcase event.
Thiago won in the age 10-14 Game Making Award category.He created a game called Sir Floofington, where the player controls a knight who wields a broom whilst hunting for the Golden Floof.He said he had been inspired by other dungeon crawlers where the player fights enemies and hunts for treasure, but had wanted to put his own spin on them.He added he had also been inspired by his dad, who is a game producer."I've always wanted to get the ideas that I have in my head out into code, that way other people can enjoy them as much as I do," he said."I might see a game on YouTube and think it's great, then have a long train of thought about how I can make it better and different."He said it feels "really, really wonderful" to have won."I've seen everyone else's games and they're really good, so I feel really humbled."
Tanisi won in the age 10-14 Game Concept Award category, for her idea for a psychological horror game.Called The Undead, the game which would let the player control a character trying to find their missing family in a post-apocalyptic world filled with zombies.She said she "loves storytelling", but had not written a story for a video game before now.She said she was "so grateful" that someone else had seen the vision she had been trying to convey in her proposal."I didn't know if it was going to be seen in the way I saw it," she said.
Inel Tomlinson, host of the competition's online prize ceremony, said: "It's refreshing to see such real, thought provoking, human ideas from these young game designers, and I'm truly excited to see what they'll create in the future."Judge and game producer Dan Ayoub said: "As someone who's been making games for many years, this experience left me deeply inspired—and incredibly optimistic about the future of our industry.""It was an absolute honour to serve on the judging panel, and beyond the joy of working alongside brilliant developers, I was genuinely humbled by the level of talent, creativity, and ambition these young creators brought."

Legendary BBC and ITV commentator retires after glittering 48-year career as sporting icons say goodbye
ICONIC broadcaster Steve Ryder is hanging up his mic after 48 years. The 75-year-old worked at both ITV and the BBC during his nearly five-decade career. 3 3 3 Ryder signed off for the final time on Sunday at the British Touring Car Championship from Oulton Park. He bid farewell to broadcasting after the race weekend, which was shown live on ITV4. A host of drivers from the past and present recorded messages for Ryder. The two-minute montage featured a host of famous names from the world of F1. Lando Norris, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Jenson Button and David Coulthard all contributed to the emotional goodbye. Ryder is best known for hosting the BBC sports show Grandstand. He also fronted coverage of rugby, golf, motorsports and rowing for the Beeb, as well as Sports Personality of the Year. Ryder left the BBC in 2005 to join ITV, where he has since taken charge of their F1 coverage and World Cup broadcasts. Speaking about his decision to retire, he told The Mail: "The biggest emotion as you get into the last two minutes of something like that is, 'For God's sake, don't c**k it up!' "Because you'd be thinking about that for the next 20 years. I've been hugely lucky with the places that the career has taken me. "But it's close to 50 years now, so the cracks are showing." Ryder was diagnosed with prostate cancer in October 2023. We did Brands Hatch for ITV on the Sunday and I had the operation on the Thursday. "So it slotted into the schedule quite nicely!"

Girls enjoy unexpected Grave Encounter with Hollywood actress Jenna Ortega
Her role in Addams Family spin-off Wednesday has seen her shoot all manner of graveyard scenes with her on-screen mother Catherine Zeta Jones. And it seems actress Jenna Ortega is equally at home in cemetries during her time off after she was spotted walking her dog in Glasgow 's Victorian city of the dead. The 22 year old Netflix star, who is in Scotland to film scenes for Star Wars director JJ Abrams latest movie, took time out of her day for a stroll in Glasgow's necropolis. During the outing, the friendly star stopped to pose for a photo with a group of young women, including another famous face - Dave Grohl 's daughter Harper, 16. It's not clear if Grohl, who has been sharing photos of the city's tourist attractions on social media this week, was there with Ortega or if it was a chance celebrity encounter. The Wednesday star looked relaxed in her all black ensemble as she posed for pictures with the group at the Necropolis - with the images showing her laughing during the exchange. Meanwhile, Dave Grohl's second eldest daughter Harper is an accomplished drummer who has joined her father onstage at gigs before. Ortega told the Scots she met that she was exploring the city during her break before shooting scenes for the Abrams film at 10pm. One of the group who spoke to Ortega, took to social media to share details of the encounter. She wrote: 'She's shooting a film here. We met her on her break.' She addded: 'She said we all looked so cool and she complimented my friends shirt!' Inspired by the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, Glasgow's necropolis opened in May 1833 and is the final resting place for some 50,000 souls from the 19th century. Ortega was also spotted taking a stroll around the city centre, circling Blytheswood Square, Pitt Street and West George Street with her beloved dog. The American star, who has been acting since 2012, became a household name thanks to her part as the central character in Netflix comedy series Wednesday based on The Addams Family character of the same name. Fellow co-stars include 55-year-old Zeta Jones, who plays Wednesday's mother Morticia, and former Bond girl Joanna Lumley, 79, who is a new edition for season two as Moriticia's mother Hester Frump. And it isn't the only spooky production Ortega's been involved in, having starred in Beetlejuice 2 alongside Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder. Abrams' latest movie is rumoured to be a sci-fi adventure called Ghostwriter and also stars Hollywood actors Glen Powell and Samuel L Jackson. The Warner Bros production was in Edinburgh and has now been filming long shoots into the early hours of the morning in Glasgow. Sets include dystopian Asian style restaurants with futuristic vehicles and although Jackson has not yet been seen, Powell has been spotted running up hills and walking along pavements in character. Director Abrams told fans who met him this week that he was enjoying his time shooting in Glasgow after being here secretly in February to check out locations during Glasgow Film Festival.
