Gerik crash: JPJ to open IP to take legal action against bus operator

GERIK - The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is opening an investigation paper (IP) to take legal action against the operator of the bus involved in the crash on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway (JRTB) last Monday, which claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students.

"There have been past cases where we brought bus operators to court. Even though they were not the drivers, as the owners of the bus company, they too hold responsibilities.
"In this case, I think it is appropriate for JPJ to open an investigation paper and after that it will be referred to the Attorney-General's Chambers for further action," he said during a visit to the site of the tragedy here today.
According to Loke, the bus company failed to comply with the mandatory components of the JPJ Inspection and Safety Audit (JISA).
He said among the seven mandatory components of JISA include the need for a safety supervisor in the company and the installation of GPS to monitor vehicle speed.
"The GPS was not activated. Also, the maximum eight-hour driving limit must be adhered to by the driver, but this was not monitored by the company.
"Another is the requirement for a 30-minute break after every four hours of driving for the driver, GPS installed in all vehicles, having an emergency action plan and the company hotline...all of these components failed to be complied with," he said.
Earlier, Acting Gerik police chief DSP Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah said the owner of the bus company was at the Gerik District Police Headquarters (IPD) at 10.30 pm yesterday to give his statement. - BERNAMA

"Following intelligence gathering and public tip-off, the 35-year-old suspect was arrested in Puchong, Selangor, on June 17. Police also seized a black bag, a silver-black air pistol bearing the inscription Pietro Beretta Gardone V.T., a speed loader, and 30 ball-bearing bullets. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 23 to assist in the investigation under Section 33 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief. GOF Foils Attempt To Smuggle 19,000 Kg Of White Rice From Thailand

KOTA BHARU, June 21 (Bernama) -- The General Operations Force (GOF) has foiled an attempt to smuggle 19,000 kilogrammes of white rice from Thailand along Jalan Kampung Air Gatal, Tanah Merah, as part of the 'Op Taring Wawasan' operations yesterday. GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said the seizure was made after a GOF's 9th Battalion team spotted several men loading white sacks into the back of a trailer. 'However, all the suspects fled into nearby bushes upon realising the presence of the police,' he said in a statement today. He said an inspection of the trailer found 19,000 kilogrammes of white rice, believed to have been smuggled from Thailand and intended for sale on the local market. 'The seized rice, along with the trailer, is estimated to be worth RM426,000. The case has been handed over to the Kelantan Paddy and Rice Regulatory Authority for further action,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 20 of the Control of Paddy and Rice Act 1994. Meanwhile, Nik Ros Azhan said in a separate operation, his team also foiled an attempt to smuggle 11 cows after intercepting a lorry that was being driven suspiciously in Kampung Telaga Bata, Tumpat, last Thursday. 'An inspection found 11 cows in the back of the lorry, and the driver failed to produce any valid documentation for the livestock. The driver, a 28-year-old local man, was arrested,' he said. He added that the total value of the seizure, including the lorry, was estimated at RM151,000.
