Tech fails to fill silence for the elderly; Report shows how digital age has spawned new challenges

Time of India14-06-2025

NEW DELHI: Neelam Maini is 70 and did not own a mobile phone till she retired from a govt job in 2015. The smartphone came into her life as a gift from her children, who also became her mentors, introducing her to internet banking and the world of social media and WhatsApp.
Ten years on, as vice-president of Sant Nagar Senior Citizens' Welfare Association that has 400 members on a WhatsApp group, Maini has found that even as the mobile phone has opened a world of communication, helping bridge the generational digital divide, it has also created a deeper problem for many urban elderly people.
With the younger generation mostly hooked to their devices — laptops and phones— and social media, more and more elderly people are feeling lonely as their children and grandchildren have little time for deeper engagement with them.
This clearly comes through in a survey by HelpAge India released on Friday, ahead of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. It reveals that a large number of senior citizens already struggling with loneliness and challenges of ageing now also have to contend with problems of the digital age.
The survey, which focused on 'intergenerational dynamics and perceptions on ageing', draws on the experiences of 5,798 respondents that included youth and elderly people from 10 cities — Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Kanpur, Nagpur and Madurai.

'Everyone is on the phone these days, even at the dining table, including elders. But parents feel hurt when they cannot have a meaningful conversation with children and grandchildren. At times, their family members have time to chat with them only on phone while on the way to work,'
Maini told TOI , sharing this as one of the experiences of seniors, who yearn for face-to-face conversations with their kin.
'Children don't sit and talk anymore.
They are always on their phones,' complained a senior citizen from Kolkata. 'They don't always listen, but when do they talk to us, it makes the day go better,' said an elderly person from Kanpur. 'I just stay silent these days. If we speak, they say we're complaining again,' bemoaned a senior from Madurai.
The problem is not just inter-generational. 'We used to gossip with friends in the past. Now we scroll silently. Even loneliness has gone digital,' said another senior from Kolkata.
The findings gain significance against the backdrop of India's population profile: as of 2025, approximately 12% of the Indian population is aged 60 and above, with the figure projected to rise to 19% by 2050. At the same time, India is home to the world's largest youth population, with over 365 million individuals aged 15–29 years.

Govt forms empowered panel to set standards, certification for ropeways

NEW DELHI: THE Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has constituted an empowered committee to develop standards and certification systems for ropeways and allied components. The 'national framework for technical codes, certifications, commissioning and safety audits' of ropeways to be devised by the committee aims to provide a structured approach to managing risks, verifying adherence to standards and reglations, and preventing untoward incidents or failures. With the ropeway sector growing rapidly, officials said it is essential to create an institutional framework to coordinate technical standards and collaboration between state and Union territory governments; focusing primarily on ensuring public safety. The panel – Empowered Committee for Ropeways Technical Evaluation, Certification and Safety (EC-Rope-TECS) – will be headed by Director General (Road Development and Special Secretary) and comprise Chief Engineer, MoRTH, head of the department of the bureau of Indian standards dealing with ropeway systems and allied infrastructure, and technical representatives from states or UTs with significant experience in implementation of ropeway systems, as members.

Horoscope Today for Rabbit Zodiac (1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, 2023) Today, do not react right away. The immediate reaction will only bring you pain later on. At work, give yourself some time before responding. In love, breathe deeply before you say anything driven by emotion. When dealing with money, think twice before acting on impulse. As far as health goes, calm your mind before proceeding. Gentle pausing will lead to better clarity, and one does not have to respond right away-the stillness will protect the soul better than any word ever could. For work, don't take on what drains you. In love, set some gentle boundaries. Financially, say no to anything that doesn't sit well with you. For health, say yes to rest and no to pressure. You do not really need to please everyone. Saying 'No' is not rejection; it's just redirection. Guard your time energy now. The right opportunities will come, when there is room. Horoscope Today for Snake Zodiac (1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013) You're very determined, but today try to notice where persistence turns to pressure. For work, step back when your effort feels forced. In love, do not seek to force connection; allow it to breathe. Financially, pause before strongly insisting on results. For health, diminish tension by easing off a little. Knowing when to stop is power. Flow over force. What is meant for you with less struggle will be eased. Trust in time. Horoscope Today for Horse Zodiac (1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014) Choose humility today by treading on a quiet path to success. Let someone else work the show in the glare of limelight while you stay back in comfort, for work. Admit it with your loved ones when you are wrong; this builds a solid trust bond. The simple, steady way is your financial choice today. From a health point of view, choose rest over proving you can go the distance. This little step back today will lead to great rewards in the future. Genuine confidence knows when it should lead and when it should listen. Be grounded. Horoscope Today for Goat Zodiac (1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015) You've been listening to many voices; your own is the most important. Work will persuade you to trust your own instinct before anything else. In love, listen to your feelings. Financially, go with what feels balanced to you. For health, listen to what your body is quietly suggesting. Advice is something good to have, but is not always right for you. You know more than you realize. Self-trust will clearly guide you today. Horoscope Today for Monkey Zodiac (1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004, 2016) Today, let your softness stand as your strength. Speak with calm honesty for respect at work. Show love with care, not afraid of it being too soft. With finance, keep clear and quiet. Nurture your body in health and don't push. Being soft does not mean being weak. It means you know when to flow and when to stop. Your softness can dislodge what force cannot. Trust in it. Horoscope Today for Rooster Zodiac (1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005, 2017) Your feelings are signals—not orders. At work, notice how you feel, but keep your balance. In love feel, but don't come too quickly to conclusions. Financially eff emotion before spending. In health, emotions should guide you, not rule you: Emotions are like weather; they pass, but they tell you something. Use them to understand, not to decide. Let the heart speak, but gently guide it with the mind. Horoscope Today for Dog Zodiac (1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018) You are still learning, and that makes all the difference. Be gentle on yourself today. In work, let mistakes be your growth. In love, forgive yourself for not knowing all. Financially, learn through every small step. In health, forgive yourself if you stray from your routine. Progress is messy. There is no need to rush your healing or path. Gentle is what you need for doing your best. Horoscope Today for Pig Zodiac (1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019) If the present feels slow or stuck, end your worries there because a breakthrough is near. At work, pauses will lead to new ideas. In love, quiet time unveils emotional clarity. In finance, slow pace keeps you from making mistakes. Concerning health, rest revitalizes. Most often the still moments bring transformations in life. Don't fear the slow pace; it's that pace that is birthed with insight, growth, and magic into the world. Air India crash aftermath: Broken hearts & empty homes; a husband who hasn't cried, an elderly who won't go home

AHMEDABAD: Eleven days after the London-bound AI 171 crashed in Ahmedabad, victims' families continue to struggle with overwhelming grief, with many displaying unexpected reactions to trauma that has left counsellors concerned. One of the most heartbreaking cases is a 27-year-old man who lost his wife and has been unable to cry even once. The couple had married in 2024, and he had flown ahead to set up their new home in London. "I should have been with her," the guilt-ridden man has been telling himself repeatedly, too traumatised to come to terms with the loss. During their last conversation, his wife had told him repeatedly not to get delayed and keep her waiting at London's Gatwick airport. "So, when he received news of the crash, he took the first available flight and reached Ahmedabad, rebuking himself for getting late. He visited the (hospital) campus for three days to complete procedures and take home her remains for last rites. He did not cry, could not cry rather, even once," said a counsellor at Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad. Hospital authorities have appointed 10 counsellors - primarily experienced psychiatrists - to help families cope with the deaths of loved ones. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Urvika Parekh, one of the counsellors, recounted breaking the news to a seven-year-old girl. "She had come to give DNA samples for identification of remains. The family could not break the news to her. Some families have lost multiple family members. The void is hard to fill," Parekh said. The counsellors have encountered several instances of families unable to return to normal lives. A senior citizen who lost four family members has not gone back home. "The emptiness of the house is too overwhelming for him, so he has been staying with a close relative for the time being. The same is true for several families as they have just held the last rites of their dear ones and are now finding it difficult to envision life without them," she said. Parekh explained the seven stages of grief - shock and denial, pain and guilt, anger and bargaining, depression, the upward turn, reconstruction, and acceptance. Disha Vasavada, another psychiatrist and counsellor said, "It is tougher to cope with the loss of a child than a parent. In many instances, it may take days or weeks to process the trauma." The counsellors will stay in touch with families. "Some relatives gained composure initially but could not hold themselves back when the coffins were handed over. The first few days were spent making arrangements, but when reality sets in, hand-holding is necessary," she said. The psychiatrists drew parallels with early Covid deaths, where relatives were not allowed to see the deceased one last time, causing dissonance for those seeking closure.
