Google Canada (NASDAQ: GOOGL) has unveiled an ambitious plan to deepen the talent pool for emerging technologies in Canada, investing $13 million in various initiatives.
According to a report, the Canadian arm of the Big Tech company will deploy the funds to support organizations spearheading the upskilling of Canadians. Dubbed the AI Opportunity Fund, Google Canada says it will focus on artificial intelligence (AI) skills acquisition projects nationwide.
While Canadian enterprises are embracing AI integration into their existing processes, the AI talent pool does not match the pace of adoption. Google is turning to mass upskilling with emerging technologies to provide a steady stream of talent and prevent redundancy for the current workforce.
'Canada is uniquely positioned to capture the immense AI opportunity by putting this technology to work,' said Sabrina Geremia, Country Managing Director for Google Canada. 'The AI Opportunity Fund will help upskill Canadians nationwide, strengthen our workforce, and prepare Canadians for an AI-powered economy.'
Google's $13 million fund will support the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII) and will directly impact post-secondary school students with the prerequisite foundational AI skills. Furthermore, a chunk of the fund will be deployed toward training indigenous students via the First Nations Technology Council.
Google Canada will provide AI skills training to individuals from communities with high unemployment rates through an endowment in Skills For Change. The Toronto Public Library will receive funding from Google Canada to democratize access to AI training for residents in the megacity.
Google's plan is intended to support a raft of initiatives from the Canadian government to ramp up AI adoption. The City of Manitoba has recently invested $2 million to train small and medium-sized businesses on AI adoption to lower barriers to adoption.
Currently, the generative AI is forecast to add $230 billion to the Canadian economy before the end of the decade, saving thousands of man-hours annually.
AI in workplaces threatens job security
Several reports have highlighted the risks of increasing AI adoption in the workplace. As companies leverage emerging technologies to improve productivity and efficiency, entry-level roles are in danger of being replaced by AI.
Furthermore, using AI-based recruiters in the hiring process brings fear of discrimination to job seekers. One study revealed that the training data employed by one AI recruiter failed to cater to a wide demographic, making it unsuitable for global application. Meanwhile, researchers at Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Western Australia have made significant strides in developing an AI system capable of understanding human emotions.
The researchers have reached a new milestone in developing an advanced AI-based chatbot with heightened emotional awareness. The latest development brings AI one step closer to improving 'human-machine interactions' while expanding the potential use cases.
The team achieved the feat by ditching conventional training methods using single facial pictures. ECU researchers trained the AI model on several related facial expressions, providing greater context and allowing the model to judge emotions like humans.
'Just like we don't judge how someone feels from one glance, our method uses multiple expressions to make more informed predictions,' said lead researcher Sharjeel Tahir.
The lead researcher notes that the new training system pushes the frontier for AI interactions with humans, allowing them to show greater empathy. Furthermore, a wide dataset within the same group is tipped to improve the model's accuracy from different angles and lighting conditions.
The researchers say the new model can be deployed in diverse industries, including education, customer support, mental health, and AI-based therapy sessions.
For now, the ECU researchers confirm that the next milestone in the research is to achieve artificial empathy. Going forward, the team will explore solutions around supporting AI models to provide empathetic responses to human queries beyond routine machine-generated answers.
However, the team must navigate challenges, including the ambiguity of human facial expressions across individuals and cultures. Furthermore, there is the risk of manipulation from bad actors using emotionally persuasive bots for nefarious reasons.
AI research increasing
AI research is progressing, matching the speed of global adoption and new use cases. One study has highlighted the use case of AI recruiters in hiring, identifying the upsides and the risks of discrimination to job seekers.
Another study is probing the use of AI, distributed ledger technology (DLT), and Big Data in advancing planetary health amid global ecological challenges. Several countries, including the U.K., are investing large sums to support AI research to provide consumer guardrails ahead of mainstream adoption.

First, we had the usual Galaxy S25 launches at the start of the year - and then there were some great budget-friendly models too. 6 6 And now we're back to the Galaxy S25 again with a new category. This time it's all about thin, thin, thin. All the tech packed inside ever-powerful phones make it tricky business to stop them from becoming almighty hunks of metal. What with chunky batteries, all that processing power needed for AI tools, the list goes on. But Samsung is determined to give it a go with the new Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge - even if there are some sacrifices. As The Sun's main Android smartphone reviewer I get hands-on with all sorts of devices all the time. Here's why you might want to consider the Galaxy S25 Edge if you're fed up with chunky mobiles weighing down your pocket. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: Look and feel How the Galaxy S25 Edge looks and feels is arguably the most important first bit of information you want. And the good news is, it's immense. I can't remember the last time I held a phone of this size and power that felt this light, at only 163g. Samsung insider reveals top tricks every user needs to know about to save battery and storage A website on the weight of items tells me that's about as heavy as an average hockey puck. The Galaxy S25+ and iPhone 15 Plus are the fairest comparisons to note, because they both have a 6.7inch display like the S25 Edge. A Galaxy S25+ weighs 190g, while the iPhone 15 Plus is 201g. But it's not just the weight, the Edge is super thin at 5.8mm - Samsung's thinnest ever phone. Looking for objects around the house, the nearest item I could compare it to is a tiny bit thicker than my passport. Again, the Galaxy S25+ is 7.3mm thick and the iPhone 15 Plus is 7.8mm. This makes the iPhone - and just about every other smartphone, even Samsung's other models - look and feel like a brick. Despite all this, the titanium body and hardened glass on the S25 Edge feel pretty tough, though I'd worry it might bend if I accidentally sat on it a few times too many. 6 Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: Performance and software From a software and performance perspective, the Galaxy S25 Edge feels just like the other phones in the series. It runs on Samsung 's own version of Android, One UI. One UI has a consistent, clean and easy look that I like. All the S25 devices run on Android 15, One UI 7, which is the very latest version of both, straight out of the box. And once again, Samsung offers a whooping seven years of security and software updates. Look after the handset it could last you quite sometime thereby saving you money on upgrades. Who offers free updates longest? The longer you receive updates, the longer you can safely continue using your smartphone - with the latest features thrown in too for free. Samsung For the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung said it would provide at least seven generations of OS updates and seven years of security updates. OnePlus At the launch of the OnePlus 13, OnePlus committed to at least four years of Android updates and six years of security updates. Xiaomi Xiaomi offers four years off Android updates and five years security updates. Google For the Pixel 9 series, Google said that devices would receive at least seven years of support. Like the other S25 devices, the Edge version uses the same powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chip on the inside to keep things running super smooth. As such, apps, games and anything else you throw at it glides through without any issue or lag. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: Features The Galaxy S25 Edge carries all the same great features as the other models too, with a large focus on AI tools this year. Samsung moved closer to Google and its Gemini digital assistant. Though not exclusive to Samsung, it's worth mentioning that Gemini is really handy - I was using it to identify problems with my plant the other day. As for Samsung's own newer features there's Now Brief, an AI companion that acts as a central hub for everything going on in your day. This keeps you in check with not only your calendar and weather but learns about your habits so will warn you about things such as traffic. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: Battery Now battery is the big one I was most curious about given that it's the part that takes up a lot of physical space in phones. Sticking to its nearest comparable sibling, the S25+, the battery on the Edge is smaller. The Edge has a 3,900 mAh, compared to the S25+'s 4,900 mAh. And seeing as I mentioned the iPhone 15 Plus before, it's worth noting that the battery there is 4,383 mAh. The battery and camera sacrifices are bold to say the least So, physically speaking the Edge is much lower. Samsung has done some performance optimising to get around this but there's still only so much they can do. With general on and off usage throughout my day - using apps like WhatsApp, checking emails, watching the odd video and going on social media - I could get a day out of it. But constant power users watching loads of videos probably won't make it through the day without help. What's more, the Galaxy S25 Edge doesn't charge as fast as it's sister handsets either. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: Camera The other big difference is on camera with only two on the back of the S25 Edge. There's no telephoto sensor to take clear photos from a distance - which is something you would expect from a phone that costs upward of a grand. But the 200-megapixel main camera and 12-megapixel ultrawide camera do manage to take some detailed pics popping with colour. 6 6 6 Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: Pricing The Galaxy S25 Edge starts from £1,099 / $1,099. But there is a new way to keep the cost of expensive phones down in the form of Samsung Club. For a lower monthly cost, you can get the latest Galaxy every year rather than buying outright each time, plus other perks. The Galaxy S25 Edge is the first phone being offered as part of the scheme from £33.31 per month. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge: Verdict Final thoughts by Jamie Harris, Assistant Technology and Science Editor at The Sun The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is a slick looking phone there is no questioning that, it oozes sexy. You get a gorgeous display, as well as the tried and trusted Samsung experience on the phone as well. The battery and camera sacrifices are bold to say the least. While I love not being weighed down by a phone in my pocket, it's hard to overlook these two drawbacks when the price tag tops a grand. HOUSTON, June 22 (Reuters) - The Shell-led (SHEL.L), opens new tab LNG Canada project has produced the first liquefied natural gas for export from its facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, two people familiar with the startup of the plant told Reuters on Sunday. "At 4 a.m. local time LNG Canada started producing its first LNG," one of the sources told Reuters. The facility is the first large-scale Canadian LNG project to begin production and also the first major facility in North America with direct access to the Pacific coast, significantly reducing sail time to Asian markets. When fully operational it will have a capacity to export 14 million metric tonnes per annum (mtpa), according to company statements. LNG Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The super-chilled gas is being produced from the facility's Train 1, which has capacity of 5.6 mtpa, and the first LNG cargo is expected to be shipped by the beginning of July, the two sources said. Only a portion of the processing plant is operating, according to the two people. Train 1 has had difficulties with one of its lines and will only produce at half its capacity until the problem is solved, one of the sources said. LNG tanker Gaslog Glasgow is approaching LNG Canada's Kitimat port, according to LSEG ship tracking data. The vessel is expected to arrive on June 29 and will be loaded with LNG, the sources said. The LNG Canada project is a joint venture between Shell Plc (SHEL.L), opens new tab, Petronas ( opens new tab, PetroChina ( opens new tab, Mitsubishi Corporation (8058.T), opens new tab and Kogas ( opens new tab. Once the facility enters service, Canadian gas exports to the U.S. will likely decline, traders said, as Canadian energy firms will have another outlet for their fuel. For now, the U.S. is the only outlet for Canadian gas. Canada exported about 8.6 billion cubic feet per day of gas via pipelines to the U.S. in 2024, up from 8.0 bcfd in 2023 and an average of 7.5 bcfd over the prior five years (2018-2022), according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That compares with a record 10.4 bcfd in 2002.
