36 detained in Sungai Petani raids on entertainment, retail outlets

SUNGAI PETANI: A total of 36 individuals, aged between 28 and 32, were detained during a raid on three premises around Jalan Kampung Baru near here early this morning.
Kuala Muda police chief ACP Hanyan Ramlan said the raids, conducted between 2am and 5am, focused on an entertainment centre suspected of running prostitution activities involving foreigners, as well as a retail shop and a restaurant.
"Those arrested include 15 men and 21 women, 20 of them from Myanmar and one from India, who is believed to be the owner of the premises.
"None of them possessed valid travel documents, and the entertainment premises were found to be operating without proper licences," he said in a statement today.
He said that during the raid, there was a scramble to escape but all were arrested by the raiding team.
"Also seized were musical equipment, liquor and cigarettes, suspected to be untaxed... all believed to be used during activities at the premises.
"The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act, Sections 55B and 6(3) of the Immigration Act, Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963, and Section 6(2) of the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment.

"Following intelligence gathering and public tip-off, the 35-year-old suspect was arrested in Puchong, Selangor, on June 17. Police also seized a black bag, a silver-black air pistol bearing the inscription Pietro Beretta Gardone V.T., a speed loader, and 30 ball-bearing bullets. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 23 to assist in the investigation under Section 33 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief. Police arrest teacher for allegedly hurting five-year-old pupil

SUNGAI PETANI : Police have arrested a teacher from a private kindergarten in Kota Kuala Muda on suspicion of causing injury to a five-year-old pupil. Kuala Muda district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan, said the 28-year-old suspect was detained this morning following a report lodged by the child's parent yesterday. "We arrested a female teacher from Kota Kuala Muda after receiving a report from the victim's father, who is also a teacher," he said when contacted by the New Straits Times today. "We will apply for a remand order tomorrow and refer the teacher for a preliminary psychiatric evaluation at the hospital." Hanyan confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon. The incident came to light when the child's parents noticed bruising on her arms. It is understood that the teacher had allegedly punished the girl for failing to follow instructions during a netball training session.
