ESPN computer releases new college football FPI rankings. Where is Ohio State?
There are a few things we like to keep tabs on here at Buckeyes Wire, and one of those is the ESPN Football Power Index. If you've followed us at all -- or ESPN for that matter -- the FPI needs no introduction.
However, for those of you that are new to the metric the "worldwide leader" likes to use, or if you simply need a refresher, the FPI, according to ESPN's website is "a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team's performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 20,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily. FPI data from seasons prior to 2019 may not be complete."
In other words, unless you have an advanced mathematics degree, step aside and don't ask how the sausage is made, just consume its savory goodness, or something like that. Of course, no metric is perfect because games and championships thankfully are played on the field, but it's still interesting to get an idea of what these mad scientist formulas spit out.
It's all great timing because ESPN updated the FPI this week, and you're probably wondering where Ohio State landed. After all, that's why you're here, right? If so, we'll spill the Scarlet and Gray beans now and let you know that the Buckeyes checked in at No. 4 with an FPI overall score of 23.8.
If that's a bit of a surprise to you because OSU is the defending College Football Playoff national champion and is seemingly No. 1 or No. 2 in other preseason opinions, then you might have a problem with the three teams ahead of Ohio State. Texas, OSU's first opponent this fall, topped everyone at No. 1 (28.5), followed by Georgia (26.6). and Alabama (24.2). Behind the Buckeyes and rounding out the top ten are Penn State (21.5), Oregon (20.5), Notre Dame 18.1), Texas A&M (17.9), Miami (FL) (17.5), and Tennessee (17.4).
All of this can be taken with a grain of salt because rarely does the No. 1 team win the national championship, but it does speak for which teams have the most talented rosters and could make a run at some pretty special things this fall. And ... as we all know, this formula and the rankings will change drastically when the games begin to come to a high definition television or streaming device near you soon.

The issue is that the late-round steal was far more consistently productive for one team than multiple others on the list. Advertisement Cole recorded 85.5 sacks through his run with the Eagles. It's good for second all-time on the franchise's list. And why she should have included his name. Saquon Barkley Barkley's inclusion on the Quarter Century team may seem premature. The former second-round pick has struggled to stay healthy for most of his career. Things changed last season, though. Barkley's NFL record for rushing yards in a single season, including playoffs, highlighted one of the most impressive seasons for a running back in history. While Barkley's numbers don't jump out, they are more impressive than those of Christian McCaffrey and Priest Holmes, at least. This is a big reason why Barkley was snubbed by this process. Michigan football rolled out the maize and blue carpet for prospects who made their way to Ann Arbor this past weekend, especially with the Wolverines hosting arguably their top overall target. It hasn't been a secret that the run-first Wolverines strongly covet 2026 Mineral (Virginia) Louisa County five-star running back Savion Hiter, who has reciprocated that interest since position coach Tony Alford jumped ship from Ohio State to the maize and blue. Hiter has been on campus several times, but this weekend marked his pivotal official visit. Michigan was able to pull no punches, showing him everything he needs to know should he decide to wear a winged helmet. Advertisement Michigan does a photo shoot with every recruit it brings in. For Hiter, however, the Wolverines had the 2025 No. 1 overall recruit, five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood, pose with Hiter: handing the ball off to him as would be the case if Hiter signs with the Wolverines. They also made a video that emulates what would be posted by the team on signing day if he enters the fray. Hiter posted both on Monday. Hiter is the No. 17 overall prospect on the 247Sports composite. He also is strongly considering Tennessee, Ohio State and Georgia. Ann Arbor was his penultimate visit. A trip to Knoxville takes place this weekend. The Vols are considered the primary competition to Michigan for Hiter's services. Michigan football gets RB commit from same Columbus school as Ryan Day's son
Michigan football fans are waiting with bated breath to find out how top overall 2026 target Savion Hiter's visit to Tennessee has gone this weekend. After all, there is no one that the Wolverines covet more than the Mineral (Va.) Louisa County five-star running back. But, as it turns out, there is another behind the scenes that the maize and blue have been working on — one that is completely off the radar. Advertisement Tailbacks coach Tony Alford spent nearly a decade in Columbus, coaching the same position at Ohio State before defecting to its biggest rival. Much like he got Michigan on Hiter's radar, Alford's radar is perhaps a bit wider than the elite running back. The thought earlier in the cycle is that Hiter would pair with four-star Javian Osborne, but Osborne ended up pledging to Notre Dame. On Sunday morning, just after midnight, Alford got (what he hopes to be one of two tailbacks) a RB commit in 2026 Columbus (Ohio) St. Francis de Sales three-star Jonathan Brown. If that high school sounds familiar, it's the same one that former Michigan linebacker Joey Velazquez—who transferred to rival OSU—originally came from. Even weirder, the quarterback currently at St. Francis de Sales is RJ Day — son of Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. Advertisement As for Brown, he's rated by 247Sports as the No. 44 tailback in the country and the 37th player in the state of Ohio. He is the 12th commitment in the class.
