‘The Boys' never pulls punches. But its creator fears a ‘cooling effect' on political TV
'The Boys' is known for chest-bursting tentacles, shape-shifters who bed your boyfriend and merciless satire of capitalist excess and corporate-controlled media.
But last year, Season 4 of the Prime Video series set its sights on a new target in its evolution from comic-book adaptation to hot-button must-see: politics. Set during a presidential election cycle that eerily reflected the one going on in the real world, the show's metaphorical relevance soared to an all-time high.
'Despite all the sex and violence and madness, we take a lot of pride in, maybe, being the most current show on TV right now,' showrunner Eric Kripke says on a Zoom call from Toronto, where 'The Boys'' fifth and final season is in production. 'You're not really expecting a superhero show to have the vibe of 'Veep.' It's just another way that we try to be unexpected.'
Unexpected yet strangely prescient. As an election that will determine the fate of democracy looms, the season details the megalomaniacal Homelander's schemes to gain political power to match his Superman-like abilities. There's something Elon Musk-like about how the most powerful man on Earth wants to make himself — and Vought International, the media/chemical/defense corporation he heads — America's governing oligarch.
There are other elements we might associate with the current administration sprinkled throughout the season too. A Vought network tries to turn a 'Sesame Street'-style show into fascist propaganda. Collectible Homelander NFTs are proposed. Masked agents grab dissidents off the streets.
All coincidental, considering scripts are written long before the final product debuts.
'Sometimes we joke, a little unsettlingly, that we're Satan's Writers' Room,' Kripke says with a laugh. 'But because we're writing about what we view as societal problems, the unfortunate truth is these things were problems two years ago when we wrote them and they'll be ongoing until we really figure out how to get a handle on a lot of this and maybe stop trusting the people in power quite so blindly.'
The mightiest of Vought's ultra-marketed superstars, Homelander, played by Antony Starr, is believed by many in the world of 'The Boys' to be America's greatest hero; in reality, he's an oversensitive, egotistical demagogue. Seemingly invincible, he tends to win despite setbacks that might destroy a lesser being. But Starr insists he doesn't model the character on President Trump. Much.
'Not specifically,' the blond, square-jawed New Zealander says during the same Zoom interview. 'I'm an equal-opportunity poacher. I've taken from a lot of different people. Last season, the idea was really teased about Homelander being like a Caesar. If you dip not far back into history, there are just so many people to choose from.
'What I have found about using one specific person for any character — especially with someone like this — is it doesn't work,' Starr continues. 'You get a two-dimensional portrayal. So, Homelander is a conglomerate of tyrants.'
After all, Homelander, unlike the president, craves breast milk, collects his gray hairs and tears people's torsos apart. Although Kripke has described him as analogous to Trump in the past, he notes that Starr brings out aspects of the character that make him his own man.
'I don't think Homelander is sympathetic, but you can empathize with him,' the showrunner says. 'That's the magic trick that Antony pulls off. Homelander sees himself as so much better and bigger than human, and yet he's inescapably human. That conflict, I think, is driving him slowly insane.
'But he's authoritarian in general,' Kripke admits. 'Obviously, things are happening in the particular country I live in that I respond to. This is a reflection of the things we see and the writers are scared of. What we found early on about the superheroes in this world is there's this interesting intersection of fascism and celebrity. It's a unique yet very current notion — not just in the States but all over the world — how people are using the power of celebrity to advance authoritarian ideas.'
With studios backtracking on diversity initiatives and media magnates like Jeff Bezos — who owns the Washington Post as well as Amazon — reticent to find themselves on the wrong end of the president's bully pulpit, concerns that there may be pressure to ease off on 'The Boys'' scathing satire seem appropriate.
Kripke says no.
'There's been a total of zero notes about pulling our punches or about making things less political or less savage,' he reveals. 'The various powers that be have been really great about it. I think they know that we'd just do it anyway, so why bother?
'Look, not about this particular show, but I'm certainly worried about a cooling effect when, now more than ever, you need people in the back of the classroom throwing spitballs,' Kripke cautions. 'That's not just healthy, that's vital. It's really important that people who can thumb their nose at it don't get scared.'
And though he leaves the politics to the writers' room, the man who plays Homelander understands that 'The Boys'' bold perspective is what's made it so compelling.
'I think actors are some of the worst people to listen to for political advice, especially ones from New Zealand,' Starr says. 'But I will say the passion that our writers clearly put into what they're doing, the care and the love that they have for their country, for what's happening socially and politically, has a broad impact. We all feel like we're part of a machine that has something to say.
'It's a big show in every way and its message is bigger: Never pull punches. Regardless [of] whether you agree or disagree, at least we are part of a show that's putting its neck on the line and taking risks across the board, from performance to thematics to commentary.'

Destin Daniel Cretton is directing the feature, which will shoot in England this summer and has a July 31, 2026, release date. Much of the movie remains shrouded in mystery. Movie rumor websites have listed upwards of a dozen possible villains, from crime bosses to alien symbiotes, who could appear in the feature, as well as a couple of different versions of the Hulk. The only thing clear at this stage is that Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are reprising their roles as MJ and best friend Ned, although how substantial those roles will be remains unclear. And Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is the big new addition so far. The story takes place after the events of the previous movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which the entire world knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man and then had that knowledge erased. Having Bernthal as the Punisher seems to point to a slightly more grounded angle on the story as the character hails from the gritty street corner of Marvel's universe and, in the comics at least, uses fists, knives and guns to tussle with bad guys, rather than spells or fancy tech. But hey, having him square off against a rampaging Hulk could be fun, too. Bernthal first showed up as vigilante Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, in Marvel's Daredevil Netflix series, then starred in his own series that ran for two seasons. He recently returned for a few episodes in Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. Marvel is betting on more Punisher and Bernthal in the months and years to come. The character is set to return for season two of Born Again and Marvel is bringing Bernthal back for a Punisher stand-alone feature for Disney+. Bernthal is co-writing the latter. Curiously, one nonnegotiable he had for his return to Daredevil was maintaining the character's violent, R-rated feel. It will be interesting to see how that translates into the more kid-friendly tone of the Spider-Man movies. Bernthal and Holland have a charmed history together when it comes to Marvel. The duo were working on the 2017 feature Pilgrimage when prepping to audition for their Marvel roles. The actors helped each other with their audition tapes. This year, Bernthal's big-screen output has included starring opposite Ben Affleck in The Accountant 2 for Amazon and appearing in the Rami Malek thriller The Amateur for 20th Century Fox. 'The Boys' Jensen Ackles Excited for Reunion With ‘Supernatural' Co-Star in Season 5
When the 15-season run of the popular series Supernatural came to a close, many fans were disappointed for several reasons. One was that the duo of Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) and Jared Padalecki (Sam) would be no more. However, Supernatural creator Eric Kripke, who also leads the way in the hit Amazon Prime Video series The Boys, ensured that wouldn't be the case. Padalecki was cast in the upcoming Season 5 of The Boys, and previously revealed to TV Insider that he would be featured in the same storyline, frame and interacting with Ackles, along with another Supernatural co-star, Misha Collins. 'It's a blast," Kripke said. "We already shot it. I will confirm that Jared, Jensen, and Misha are all in the same frame together, and in the same storyline, and interacting with each other.' While speaking with Collider about his new series, Countdown, Ackles addressed the reunion with his former co-star, Padalecki, on The Boys, and the excitement about working together again was obvious. 'There's a reason he and I did that show for 15 years because we truly got along, we truly enjoy working together, and we're effectively brothers in real life, too," Ackles said. "So anytime we get a chance to mix it up and do stuff, it's always a blast. He's the best. You can put us two in front of anything; we'll get the job done.' ‘Superman' Soars Into Theaters Soon: Release Date, Cast, How to Get Tickets and More
It's been 12 years and more than 20 DC movies since a Superman solo adventure came to theaters. Now, in what DC and Warner Bros. have dubbed the 'Summer of Superman,' the Man of Steel is set to once again have his day in the sun. With new trailers, posters, behind-the-scenes videos and real-life advertisements appearing daily, the 'Superman' marketing drive is in full swing. This July will mark the release of 'Superman,' the first film in a rebooted DC universe with a new cast taking on a slew of iconic heroes and villains. While you wait for the last son of Krypton to fly back to the big screen, here's everything you need to know about 2025's 'Superman.' 'Superman' releases nationwide on July 11, 2025. The film marks David Corenswet's first time in the capes, boots, and — yes — trunks as Superman. Rounding out the movie's central trio are Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. But these three are far from the only characters joining Clark Kent/Kal-El in Metropolis. Daily Planet staffers like Jimmy Olsen and Perry White and fellow heroes such as Green Lantern, Hawkgirl and Mister Terrific will officially join the DCU in the film. With 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' set to hit theaters next summer, don't be shocked if Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) makes a surprise cameo in her cousin's big outing. Disney and Marvel Studios temporarily fired Gunn between the second and third 'Guardians of the Galaxy' films, allowing him to write and direct 'The Suicide Squad' for DC. He then became co-CEO of DC Studios after returning to Marvel, endeavoring to relaunch the DC movie universe. Much of the marketing campaign for 'Superman' highlights Krypto, a super-powered dog and companion to Superman. Debuting in 1955's 'Adventure Comics #210,' Krypto generally arrives on Earth as a survivor of Krypton, much like Kal-El himself. Krypto first appeared on the big screen in 2022's animated 'DC League of Super-Pets' voiced by Dwayne Johnson. Gunn debuted his version of Krypto — a fully CGI character — back in October during Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Krypto was revealed in a motion poster sitting alongside Superman on the moon — a reference to an iconic panel from Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's 'All-Star Superman.' In a Tweet, Gunn said Krypto was partially based on Ozu, a dog he rescued from a hoarding situation and who 'was problematic to say the least.' 'I remember thinking, 'Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?' – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life.' Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer. Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. 'Creature Commandos,' an animated series Gunn created for Max, became the first official project of the DCU when it released in late 2024 and early 2025. The series, which features the first appearance of Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr., has already been renewed for a second season. After 'Superman,' the next DCU project will be the second season of 'Peacemaker,' which premieres Aug. 21. Because 'Peacemaker' began as part of the previous DC franchise (featuring cameos from 2017's Justice League lineup), the second season will serve as both a continuation and a soft reboot of the series to integrate it into the new universe. It seems Gunn has fully adopted the messiness of comic book canon. A number of other projects have been announced and slated for the DCU, including the aforementioned 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' in June 2026. Other entries include a solo Clayface feature in Sept. 2026, a 'Swamp Thing' movie directed by James Mangold and a TV series focused on the Amazons of Themyscira. Both Batman and Wonder Woman, among other heroes, additionally have new films on the way. Though 'Superman' does not directly adapt any one storyline, Gunn stated on Threads that he drew inspiration from a number of specific comics and adaptations. Superman's logo in the film reflects a costume worn by the character in Mark Waid and Alex Ross' 'Kingdom Come.' Released in 1996, the story features an older Superman returning to heroics after becoming disillusioned by a new generation of violent vigilantes. The use of this logo may signal a thematic connection to 'Kingdom Come' in the film, as trailers hint at Superman grappling with his place in a world of political agendas and corporate-backed heroes. 'Kingdom Come' appears in a 'Superman' tie-in box set releasing in August. Also included are Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's 'Superman for All Seasons,' Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's 'All-Star Superman,' and Alan Moore and Curt Swan's 'Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?' — three classic Superman adventures featuring the early and final days of the Man of Steel. It is likely Gunn's movie will draw at least tonal inspiration from each. DC Comics released a reprint facsimile of Krypto's first appearance, 'Adventure Comics #210,' on June 18.
