Jon Jones, a legend in mixed martial arts, has retired and interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall has been elevated to the undisputed titleholder, according to UFC president and chief executive Dana White.
"Jon Jones called us last night and retired," White said during a press conference in Azerbaijan, where UFC Fight Night was held. "Jon Jones is officially retired, Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC."
Jones, who turns 38 on 19 July, compiled a 28-1 record (11 TKOs) in capturing UFC titles at light-heavyweight and heavyweight. He was in line for a highly anticipated unification bout with Aspinall, 32, who became the UFC's interim heavyweight champion in November 2023, when an injured Jones couldn't fight.
Englishman Aspinall (15-3 MMA, 11 TKOs, 1 K0, 8-1 UFC) posted a message on Instagram after White's announcement.
"For you fans. It's time to get this heavyweight division going," wrote Aspinall, 32. "An active undisputed champion."
Jones last fought on 16 November, 2024, winning by a third-round TKO over Stipe Miocic. Jones has won six consecutive bouts since a no contest with Daniel Cormier on 29 July, 2017.
White's announcement countered Jones' own words on Thursday, when he appeared on the 'Full Send' podcast.
"I don't want to say that I'm retired, because fighting's in my blood," Jones said on the podcast, per media reports.
"Right now, I could really care less about fighting. I've been doing it my whole life at a very high level and when the itch comes back - and if it comes back - then I'll do it with my whole heart, do it to the best of my abilities.
"I think I will fight again. Where the future of combat sports is going, it's going to be amazing, when I pop back up."
Jones has had a chequered history out of the Octagon, where he became the youngest UFC titleholder at age 23, with a win over Mauricio Rua for the 205-pound crown.
Jones, who is 16-0 in UFC title bouts, has dealt with legal issues, as well as a year-long suspension in 2016 for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs - a result he disputes.

Boxing: Claressa Shields warns Lani Daniels: 'I'mma lay your ass out!'

Daniels meets the reigning queen in Detroit on July 29 in a bid to make New Zealand history as the first ever fighter to unify the world heavyweight belts. Photo: Photosport If the belt was decided by a war of words, Claressa Shields would barely break a sweat against Lani Daniels. The Kiwi appeared visibly intimidated when trading barbs with the larger than life American, alas it will be fists which determine the true baddest woman on the planet. Daniels meets the reigning queen in Detroit on 29 July in a bid to make New Zealand history as the first ever fighter to unify the world heavyweight belts. But standing in her way is the phenom of the women's boxing world, and Shields was quick to remind Daniels of the monumental task awaiting her when they met at today's press conference. After thanking her ancestors, Daniels shared her gratitude for the opportunity. "One thing my coach has taught me is to respect boxing and it will respect you. So I am planning to come here and win and I've been preparing and I am preparing the best that I can to give a mean fight. And I know it's going to an entertaining one and the only way I'm going home is on a stretcher." But Shields wasn't in a cordial mood, and was vicious with her retort. "I promise you - you said stretcher? You will be going out on one!" she said. "Lani, if you come out there and try to stand there in front of me and brawl with get inside the ring and prove your point, there is no woman in the world that can beat me in a fight, I'mma lay your ass out, and then your coach will have to pick you up, I'm not playing around." Daniels and Shields will fight for the undisputed, unified heavyweight championship, an accolade no Kiwi has achieved in any division. After initially predicting a round seven finish, Shields altered this after hearing Daniels' coach John Conway say they plan to brawl. "I was giving Lani round seven, but from what her coach got there and said today, that done piss me clean off, saying that she gonna stand there and fight or third. I'm gonna make Lani quit. I'm gonna make her throw in the towel." Daniels though, offered her own opinion on when the bout will end. "If we are talking numbers, I think I stop her in round nine." Asked what she has to do in order to finish the champ in the ninth... "I have to make it there." Shields vs Daniels Undisputed world heavyweight title July 29 Detroit

Hooker to host female 'battle royal' in backyard

An earlier event that Dan Hooker hosted in his backyard. Photo: youtube UFC fighter Dan Hooker is bringing back his controversial backyard brawls, inviting 32 women to fight it out for $50,000. In a post on his Facebook page alongside former world middleweight champion Israel Adesanya, Hooker called on female fighters to throwdown in his backyard for his second '1 min scraps' event. "Alright, we are going to let the girls play next, we are going to find out who's the baddest b***h in town," Hooker said. Adesanya added the prize up for grabs. "50k, one minute, or just as long as it takes to finish these b*****s in his backyard." Hooker then implied he would be opening the door for criminals to compete. "So what I need from you ladies is your name, your weight and your record, and maybe send me a little video of you doing something illegal so I know I can trust ya." Israel Adesanya and Dan Hooker announcing the 32 women backyard battle royal. Photo: facebook The UFC lightweight courted controversy in May when he hosted his inaugural 32-man, one-minute fist fight tournament. It saw a senior Mongrel Mob member referred to police, as he was wearing an ankle bracelet. The event prompted New Zealand's Boxing Coaches Association president Billy Meehan to call the event "straight-out thuggery". "What you've got there is just thugs getting in there and going out and they're just like absolutely smashing each other and we're going to see somebody get seriously hurt, if not killed." Following the backlash, Hooker went on the on-line combat sport programme the Ariel Helwani Show last month, and vowed to host more events. "There's a few lefties having a sulk, but once everyone watches the full 45 minutes and sees the respect for the fighters, since when did putting gloves on in the backyard and having a punch up become illegal?" he said. "Since when is that a crime?" -RNZ
