Odisha beach gangrape: 4 accused minors undergo test to ascertain exact age
Bhubaneswar, Four minor boys, who were among the 10 people arrested for their alleged involvement in the gangrape of a college student at Odisha's Gopalpur sea beach, on Thursday underwent a medical test to ascertain their exact age, police said.
The ossification test was conducted after the police urged the Juvenile Justice Board to treat the four minors – who claim to be 17 years old – as 'adults' for the trial.
The police took them to the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology at the MHCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur for the test.
'We have conducted the ossification test, a medical procedure that uses X-rays to assess the age of a person,' said Prof Sudeepa Das, the head of the FMT department.
Das said they have also collected blood samples of all the 10 accused and the 20-year-old woman for the DNA test.
"Considering the gravity and heinous nature of the crime, the police prayed to the JJB to prosecute the four minors as adults under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015," Berhampur SP Saravana Vivek M had said after the arrest of all the accused on Tuesday.
While the six other accused were forwarded to jail after their bail plea was rejected by the JMFC , Berhampur, the four minors were sent to correctional homes as per law, police said.
'The woman was brought for medical and FMT tests on June 16 within hours of the incident, and all the required samples could be collected,' Das added.
The June 15 gangrape case, which sparked nationwide outrage, is currently being investigated by the CID.
The police had earlier said that all 10 arrested accused were between 17 to 24 years of age, and the prime accused is a B.Tech dropout having criminal records.

Dimapur: Dimapur commissioner of police Kevithuto Sophie on Friday reminded everyone and organisations, including media, civil society, and institutions, of their legal and ethical duty to uphold the privacy of children in conflict with law. In a release, police commissioner Sophie said Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, strictly prohibits the disclosure of the name, photograph, school, family, address, or any other detail that may reveal the identity of a child involved in criminal or protective legal matters. The police commissioner said legal consequences entails punishment of imprisonment upto six months, fine upto Rs 2 lakh or both. "Such violations not only attract legal consequences but also cause deep psychological and social harm to the child and their family," the release said. The police commissioner urged the media houses, content creators, and citizens to refrain from sharing, reposting, or publishing such details in any form. "Together, let us strive to protect the rights and dignity of every child," Sophie said. The police commissioner issued the reminder following a letter to him by the Juvenile Justice Board Dimapur on June 18, stating that apprehension of a child in conflict with law, along with name, had been published in local newspaper(s), which is a clear violation of Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice Act that prohibits the disclosure of identity of a child in conflict with law. The Juvenile Justice Board sought the police commissioner's prompt attention and intervention in the matter, considering the legal safeguards provided to children under the juvenile justice framework.

Faridabad : A 19-year-old Dalit youth was subjected to brutal torture and humiliation by his former friends in Ballabgarh. The victim was not only beaten with sticks but also forced to drink urine and sexually assaulted during the ordeal that took place on June 16. According to police, the teenager was lured from his house in Subhash Colony by Piyush, a former friend, who took him to a room near a local dispensary. There, Piyush and his accomplices allegedly tied him up and unleashed a series of brutal acts — beating him with sticks, forcibly shaving his head, eyebrows, and moustache, and hurling casteist slurs. The assailants allegedly stole Rs 3,000 from his pocket and sexually assaulted him as well. "The victim had recently started hanging out with a different group of youths. This angered Piyush and the others, leading to the eventual assault on him," said a police officer familiar with the case. The teenager had allegedly been assaulted by the same group just a day before the incident. "Three teams are working to apprehend the remaining culprits," said Nafe Singh, the SHO of Adarsh Nagar police station. The victim's cousin, who lodged a police complaint, alleged that the accused were known troublemakers in the area with previous criminal records. Piyush, who had known the teenager for 7-8 years, was presented before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody. The two minors were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board. Following SHRC raid, police register FIRs against rehab centres in Bengaluru for illegal detention, physical abuse, and harassment
Following a series of raids carried out by the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on five rehab centres allegedly involved in serious violations, as many as three FIRS have been filed against the accused charging them under wrongful confinement and harassment to the inmates under the garb of treatment. One of the victims who was rescued, identified as Krishne Gowda, 50, alleged that his wife Asha, her father Anand, and a relative Kiran forcibly admitted him to the centre on false grounds to stop him from attending court hearings related to a long-standing property dispute. He alleged that he has been confined at the centre since December 2023 despite being mentally fit and never addicted to substances. In another statement recorded on Thursday evening, a youth told police that he was sent to the same rehab centre by his mother in the first week of June due to addiction of mobile games and behavioural issues. Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case of illegal confinement under the Juvenile Justice Act for further investigation. .Officials said many of the detainees were non-addicted individuals, held without proper medical oversight or legal process.
