Govt school in Ropar becomes hub for national-level shooters
ROPAR: A father's quest to support his son's dream transformed a modest govt school in Ropar into a breeding ground for national-level rifle shooting talent.
Narinder Singh Banga, a Punjabi teacher at Government Senior Secondary School, Jhallian Kalan village in Ropar district, took the first step to set up a small shooting range at his own expense in 2011-12.
Motivated by his son Arshdeep Banga's passion for shooting, Banga shifted to Ropar from Bhauwal village (Nurpur Bedi) and initially set up a makeshift range at Shivalik Club, later moving it to Shivalik Public School, where Arshdeep studied.
Within two years, the initiative found a more permanent home at the govt school in Jhallian Kalan, where Banga was posted. Arshdeep was soon enrolled there, and under his father's guidance, began winning medals at state and national level competitions.
Today, Arshdeep serves as a coach at the Sahibzada Ajit Singh Academy in Ropar, which houses three shooting ranges, and is the general secretary of the Ropar Rifle Shooting Association (RRSA).
He credits his inspiration to Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra.
Later, fellow teachers Avtar Singh Dhanoa, lecturer in economics at the same school, and Ranjit Singh, now a retired Punjabi teacher from Shantpur village, joined hands with Banga.

The trio sought donations to build the infrastructure-air conditioning units, basic facilities, and equipment-and laid the foundation of what would become an international-standard range.
"Our dream was to provide rural students access to a sport that was earlier considered elite," said Dhanoa, whose twins also passed out from the school after winning gold medals in shooting competitions.
The efforts received official recognition and support when the Ropar deputy commissioner provided two international-standard shooting targets in 2022-23.
This was followed by a state govt grant of Rs 5.4 lakh.
Today, the school has emerged as a hub for aspiring shooters, attracting students not only from Ropar city but also from distant districts like Gurdaspur. Two students from Batala, Jasleen Kaur and Jaideep Singh, have enrolled at Jhallian Kalan School solely to pursue rifle shooting.
"Several of our students clinched gold and silver medals at both state and national school championships in 10mt rifle shooting.
Two students passed out from our school, including my son Arshdeep and another, Arshdeep Kaur, clinched national gold in the 25 meters shooting range. Currently, there is no shooting range with 25 mt and 50 mt in our district, but only 10 mt rifle shooting. It's rewarding to see our grassroots initiative producing results at such a high level," said Banga, who also served on Punjab's technical team for shooting competitions since 2018.
He revealed that one player hailing from Nangal of Ropar district clinched a bronze medal each at the national championship and in Khelo India, in 50 mt rifle shooting, although he didn't take training from Sahibzada Academy or Jhallian village school.
Ropar district sports officer Jagjiwan Singh said, "More than 40 students from Ropar district have won state level gold and around 25 have won gold at national level championships in 10 mt rifle shooting."

Horoscope Today, June 22, 2025: Saturn's Transit Impact on Your Zodiac Sign & Remedies
Saturn is the planet of our karmas. It teaches us valuable lessons by encouraging us to learn from our mistakes. Saturn wants us to grow, evolve, and continuously improve as we move forward in our life journey. It also wants us to introspect about our actions to avoid repeating the same mistakes. Currently, Saturn is transiting into the sign of Pisces, and from this position, it will be casting its influence on the lives of all zodiac signs. Let us discover Saturn's cosmic guidelines for you today and how you can seek his blessings in this Daily Shani Horoscope . Saturn Horoscope Today for Aries Today, Saturn teaches you that slowing down is not weakness; it is a sign of wisdom. The karmic lesson to learn is to pause before pushing ahead. Instead of rushing into action, take a deep breath and feel what needs to be focused on. Calm beginnings lead to stronger results. Consider how a moment's pause can actually quicken the clarity within. There is peace within that pause, and today it has something to offer you. Saturn Remedy: Regular yoga practice to maintain physical and mental health. Saturn Horoscope Today for Taurus Today, Saturn asks you to be rooted in your own truth. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure Your Child's Future with Strong English Fluency Planet Spark Learn More Undo The karmic lesson is to trust in your choices even if others cannot understand them. Do what your body and spirit tell you to do. Let peace be the guide for your steps, not outside opinions. Think of self-trust as your strongest foundation. What is right for you may not make sense to others, and that, after all, is perfectly okay. Saturn Remedy: Use a black wallet or purse to attract Shani's favor. Saturn Horoscope Today for Gemini Saturn comes to teach you about routine and patience. The karmic truth today is that what may be seen as boring acts as a silent strength builder; keep at that healthy habit, get that unfinished business over with, and witness it becoming part of your confidence. Even repetition in the smallest amounts constitutes structure for your rapid thoughts. Contemplate how consistency can support your freedom; embrace repetition because it fortifies you and steadies the grounds from under your energy. Saturn Remedy: Keep your home and workplace tidy and organized. Saturn Horoscope Today for Cancer Saturn urges you gently to watch your thoughts rather than drown in them. The karmic lesson is to separate reflection from overthinking. Let the past teach you without binding you backward. Going for a walk or journaling might be helpful to clear the emotional fog. Think how clarity arises from stillness, not from pressure. Reflect instead of ruminate, and your inner voice will calmly and steadily guide you. Saturn Remedy: Engage in charity walks, especially on Saturdays. Saturn Horoscope Today for Leo This day will weigh heavy with darkness as Saturn reminds a Leo that growth is often born in discomfort. The karmic lesson, however, is not to shun away from change simply because it makes you uneasy. One is to take the more difficult path, but one that is truthful. The adjustments in any of your routines or relationships seem tense right now, but in time, they will pay you well. Just think of your courage today shaping your peaceful tomorrow. The discomfort brought about by change is only temporary; the reward is forever. Saturn Remedy: Play or listen to meditative music to soothe the mind. Saturn Horoscope Today for Virgo Today, Saturn asks you to slow down and listen into your deeper self. The karmic lesson is to leave some room where quiet can dwell, so that clarity may arise. There must be no forcing of productivity-rest is as valid and can as well serve as productivity. Maybe a sudden break from routine can open your mind to new revelations. Balance your time for stillness with renewed determination. Inspiration comes when you give yourself the permission to remain still and allow your thoughts to flow. Saturn Remedy: Be cautious with your words, especially with elders and superiors. Saturn Horoscope Today for Libra Saturn accompanies your evolution toward emotional balance. The karmic lesson is learning to set limits without apology. Saying "no" gives back time and heart. Be kind yet very firm with your choices today; the serenity that follows from firm choices will teach more than people-pleasing ever could. Believe your strength shines within your limits. No with grace and without guilt is the act of honouring self, not the act of rejecting another. Saturn Remedy: Work on maintaining a calm and composed mindset. Saturn Horoscope Today for Scorpio Saturn aids you in transforming ancient wounds into wisdom today. The karmic lesson is to refuse to bear your past. Let memories channel you, not construct you. Journal, reflect, and move forward consciously. Think of the origins-where you have been for so long and how free you feel when you stop narrating your own tragic story: Your past serves as a glorious birthplace for your future, not a final refuge-allow space for newer chapters. Saturn Remedy: Be mindful of others' boundaries and respect them. Saturn Horoscope Today for Sagittarius Saturn suggests a softer reminder that small changes govern larger outcomes, "The karmic lesson today is that the choice between long-term wellness and short-term comfort must be made." Today, try to swap a single habit: Wake up earlier, do some exercises, or minimize distractions. That lone act will trigger the initiation of a new chain of events. How do you think discipline can be equated with self-love? Today's little change in habits will silently, but powerfully, alter your future. Saturn Remedy: Limit your usage of electronic devices on Saturdays. Saturn Horoscope Today for Capricorn Saturn urges action, not overthought. The karmic lesson states that clarity is usually attainable only after you've done something. Don't wait for perfect conditions: Instead, take that one small step toward what matters to you. Your own efforts will generate the direction you seek. Even short tasks, when pursued with intent, have grounding effects. Then think of that relief given by structure, when thoughts fly around! You find clarity by doing, not by waiting, hence your peace is an offspring of your action. Saturn Remedy: Develop and follow a disciplined daily routine. Saturn Horoscope Today for Aquarius Saturn tells you to pause and make sure your priorities are in order. The karmic lesson is learning the difference between urgent and truly important. In a rush, mistakes will be made or someone will burn out. Lower down the pace and realign. Do what matters in the long term. Think of how your time moulds your energy. Do not mix urgency with importance- Saturn rewards what is done by wisdom and not just speed. Saturn Remedy: Allocate time for self-reflection and introspection. Saturn Horoscope Today for Pisces Today Saturn offers forgiveness and gentle correction instead of punishment. You have given incessantly; perhaps too much, and now the moment has come to restore a balance. Select ease without guilt: say no, take rest, or turn aside; even a brief pause will restore your inner flow. Think of it as how your boundaries guard your spirit: where balance is invited into places you've pushed too far, you'll feel strength return through gentleness rather than struggle. Saturn Remedy: Particularly avoid eating meat on Saturdays. If Cost of death escalates, will the State invest in keeping its citizens alive?
The tragic air accident in Ahmedabad involving the Air India flight has shocked the world. Air travel is one of the safest modes of transport, and when such a tragedy occurs, it is heartbreaking. Although nothing can compensate for the loss of life of the dear ones, Air India's parent company, Tata, has announced a compensation of `1 crore for the families of the victims. Though this may appear generous, under the international Montreal Convention, the airline is liable to pay a compensation amounting to 1,51,880 Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) per deceased passenger. This translates to approximately Rs 1.8 crore at the current exchange rates to the next of kin. It is unclear whether the Tata offer is in addition to the mandatory payment of Rs 1.8 crore as per law. A few days before the tragic air accident, some passengers of Mumbai's infamous local trains fell off the overcrowded compartments and died. These were daily commuters struggling to make a living in one of the world's most prosperous cities. The Maharashtra government promptly announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs. Railways have remained silent so far, but as per the Railways Act of 1989, the Railways are bound to give a compensation of Rs 8 lakh. For this, the kin of the victim will have to file a claim with the Railway Claims Tribunal, and the compensation may take many years to be fruitful, if at all. On an average, the passengers in an international flights are wealthier than an average commuter in a Mumbai local. The disparity in compensation between the two sets of victims is glaring. All lives are equal, but some lives are more equal in our society. Life is so cheap in India. The victory celebration of the IPL champions claimed many lives in Bengaluru a few weeks ago. Many died in a stampede in Kumbh Mela; we don't even know how many actually died there. The accident in Mumbai local that claimed five lives are in headlines only because they happened together in one tragic accident. It is estimated that on an average seven people die every day in accidents related to Mumbai local. That is around three thousand victims a year. To put things in perspective, total number of terror victims in India last year was 87, including the terrorists killed. In other words, commuting to office or college in a Mumbai local is more dangerous than living in a terror-prone area.
