Government hopeful to finalise early deal with U.S. by July 9, on track for broader deal by fall
The government is on track and hopeful to complete an initial tranche of the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement by the deadline of July 9, and a wider first tranche of the Agreement by Fall of this year, according to officials in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
'On the India-US BTA, the US team was here in India for six days of negotiations from June 6-11,' Rajesh Agrawal, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Chief Negotiator on India's behalf in the India-U.S. BTA negotiations, said at a press briefing. 'We are progressing towards our target of finalising tranche one by Fall of 2025.'
The Fall deadline — which is typically September to November in the U.S. — was first mentioned in a joint statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump following Mr. Modi's trip to the U.S. in February this year.
Regarding an early, abridged tranche of the deal, Commerce Secretary Sunil Berthwal said the government was hopeful of completing it by July 9, after which Mr. Trump's reciprocal tariffs would kick in again.
'We are working out the early tranche, and as you are aware that there is a day, July 9, before that we would like to conclude the early tranche,' Mr. Berthwal said. 'Both the teams are visiting each other. We visited the U.S. twice and the U.S. team has visited India twice, so the progress has been good. We are hopeful that this would be done within the timelines.'
On the India-U.K. Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the negotiations for which concluded in early May, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce L. Satya Srinivas said the two sides were on track to complete the legal scrubbing of the text and finalise it in three months since negotiations ended. The India-EU FTA talks, too, were gaining momentum, he said.
'On the EU FTA, there are some tracks that are working this week together, and we have our next round which is scheduled on July 7,' Mr. Srinivas explained. 'The momentum has picked up regarding the EU talks and the frequency of meetings has increased. Earlier we used to have rounds that were spread across a quarter or even more, but now the time period between meetings has reduced.'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a massive International Yoga Day event in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, on Saturday. As the stage is set for the grand programme, the Visakhapatnam City Police has imposed traffic and drone restrictions, reported PTI. According to the police, around 5 lakh people are expected to participate in the International Yoga Day celebrations. The event is being organised in a 26-km-long corridor from RK Beach to Bhogapuram in the port city of Visakhapatnam. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has said the event, scheduled from 6:30 am to 8:00 am, will be organised to get recognition and set records, including a Guinness World Record. City Police Commissioner Sanka Batra Bagchi said elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure the smooth conduct of the event. Bagchi said, as quoted by ANI, "Five lakh people will participate in the World Yoga Day celebration. We are making arrangements accordingly." He added that the police enforced vehicle movement restrictions on key routes, especially near the Beach Road area, from June 20 afternoon till the evening of June 21. "There are traffic restrictions in Visakhapatnam from today till the evening of the 21st. There will be restrictions on the movement of vehicles on Beach Road from NTR Circle to Park Hotel," the commissioner said. Bagchi advised residents to use alternative routes. He said, "City residents should use alternative routes on Beach Road. There will be restrictions on the movement of vehicles from Park Hotel to Bhimili Beach." 1) Restrictions are imposed on the movement of vehicles from Park Hotel to Bhimili Beach. 2) Buses coming from Vizianagaram for the celebration should come towards Boyapalem. 3) Buses coming from the Alluri district for the celebration should come from Vepagunta. 4) Heavy vehicles from Srikakulam should not come towards Thagarapu Valasa-Anandapuram as they will be barred. From Anakapalle to Anandapuram, the heavy vehicles will have to go towards Srikakulam. 5) As many as 9,500 personnel will be deployed to maintain order during the large-scale event. 6) Use of drones in specific zones has been banned from 20 to 21 June. The ban applied within a 5-kilometre radius of sensitive locations, including INS Chola, Andhra University grounds, Kali Mata temple, and INS Kalinga. The 11th International Yoga Day, celebrated by several countries worldwide, has been themed 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'.

India Becoming Powerful Player In Science And Tech: UK Minister
London: The UK must harness scientific and academic relationships with India as it becomes an increasingly powerful player in the science and technology space, Britain's minister for science, research and innovation has said. During a session on 'Unlocking UK-India Collaboration for a New Era of Innovation' at India Global Forum's Future Frontiers Forum at the Science Museum in London on Thursday, Lord Patrick Vallance called for greater mobility of high-skilled professionals through the Global Talent Visa and the need to tap into complementary skills across all sectors. The minister revealed the UK government's much-anticipated Industrial Strategy would be released in a few weeks, forming the blueprint for focus areas for such a partnership with India. "There is already a strong relationship between India and the UK, and I think it's growing," said Vallance. "But government-to-government relationships on science aren't actually what drives everything. It has to be a scientist and a scientist as well. There are important academic links. I'd like to see more of that as India becomes an increasingly powerful player in the science and tech space," he said. The forum was addressed by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal earlier on the sector-wide benefits of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) struck between the two countries, as it "adds value to science and technology and innovation". "A Free Trade Agreement demonstrates to the world that the two countries are friends, allies, and plan to work together closely; they trust each other," said Goyal. Vallance concurred and highlighted: "India has its focus areas, we have ours, now we need to create opportunities across those sectors." Lord Ara Darzi, the British surgeon behind a seminal review of the National Health Service (NHS) and much-needed areas of reform, hailed India's "transformative health solutions" as the "intellectual and production power" the UK must collaborate with. The forum also included a 'Pitchers and Punters' curated showcase of Indian start-ups pitching to a jury of international investors.
