Google is ready to open the app floodgates for Android Automotive
Android Automotive, Google's OS for cars, will be getting new car-ready apps in February, including video streaming, web browsers, and mobile gaming apps.
Only cars certified with Google built-in will support these new apps, ensuring they meet program requirements.
This change only applies to Android Automotive — Android Auto powered by phones or on third-party devices will not get these new apps until a later date.
If you thought distracted driving was bad already, Android Automotive is undergoing some changes that could make things worse. Starting next month, drivers with cars featuring Google's infotainment OS will be able to watch videos, browse the internet, and even play mobile games.
Google's car-ready mobile apps program will bring more apps to cars with Google built-in (via Android Authority). The program was announced at last year's I/O, and hopes to fill the otherwise barren app landscape on the Play Store for cars with a dizzying array of choices for drivers.
The first apps you'll see are video, gaming, and browser apps. These all need to meet Google's safety and quality guidelines, and must support x86 architecture. Cars equipped with ARM chips need not apply. However, some may still be available through Android Automotive's compatibility mode. All apps must be under 24p to qualify.
The full list of apps that will be available has not yet been released, but we do know AMC+ will be among them, so you can watch The Walking Dead rapidly deteriorate in quality by Season 6, just in case you were not road-ragey enough while driving.
Interestingly, Google's developer page mentions that only cars certified with Google built-in will support these apps. It is unclear which car models this means, but Google says this certification ensures vehicles meet the program requirements.
Android Automotive has gotten off to a slow start, with only a handful of vehicle models using the OS so far. There was excitement at I/O 2024 when Google announced it was finally bringing big updates to the platform, and the car-ready program was one of those.
Although Google said at last year's I/O that car-ready Android Automotive apps would also come to Android Auto on your phone or third-party Android Auto displays, they are not coming yet. Instead, Google now says the Android Auto counterparts to these Android Automotive apps will come "at a later date."
Future plans for Google's car-ready program for Android Automotive include the following:
Bringing the platform to larger screens.
The addition of more app categories.
Including the program in the phone version of Android Auto.
There are few other details about what we can expect next month. The success of this program will depend on the quality and availability of apps. One thing is certain, you've never played Fortnite quite like you will when it is finally available on your car's entertainment console as you cruise down the highway. An earlier version of this story conflated Android Auto with Android Automotive and misreported that these apps are coming to Google's phone-mirroring software for head units (Android Auto) rather than its infotainment operating system (Android Automotive). They may come to Android Auto at a later date, but for now, the car-ready apps program is all about Android Automotive.

Tesla officially launches robotaxis in Austin to a small group of users, charging a $4.20 flat fee per ride
On a balmy Sunday in Austin, Tesla fans awaited the promise of the future. After a few hours of delays, that promise finally came true, and a select group took their first rides, livestreaming their experience. While Tesla robotaxis are meant to be fully autonomous, Tesla employees were still present in the passenger seat of the cars for safety reasons. Earlier this month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk teased the launch of the robotaxi, a driverless Tesla Model Y emblazoned with its namesake in Cybertruck-style font. "Beautifully simple design," Musk wrote on X. "These are unmodified Tesla cars coming straight from the factory, meaning that every Tesla coming out of our factories is capable of unsupervised self-driving," he added. On Sunday, Musk said the first Tesla robotaxi rides would be available for a flat fee of $4.20. A small group of invited users was the first to try them out. Tesla fans buzzed on social media in the lead-up to the official launch, which was initially delayed as users awaited the release of the official Tesla robotaxi app. "We are approaching the window where we expected to have the app and showing everything," Chuck Cook, one of the early invitees to try the Tesla robotaxi, said on X. "There looks like there will be a small delay in the distribution of the app for couple hours." Tesla AI, the division behind the robotaxis, said Sunday on X that Tesla robotaxis will eventually be deployed anywhere they are approved and are designed for "scalability." "It does not require expensive, specialized equipment or extensive mapping of service areas. It just works," the company said. The company launched a website where users can sign up for early access when the service becomes available in their area. It also launched an X feed dedicated to Tesla robotaxis. With the launch of Tesla robotaxis, Austin continued to solidify itself as a new theater for Silicon Valley's race to shape the new age of driverless transportation. In March, Google-backed Waymo launched its autonomous ride-hailing service in partnership with Uber. Waabi, a Canadian startup backed by Uber and Nvidia, is set to launch fully autonomous trucks in Texas this year. Zoox, backed by Amazon, opened its first robotaxi serial production facility in Austin last week. This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

If You Get This Message From Apple Or Google, It's An Attack
Delete all these messages. There's nothing a cyber criminal likes more than highly publicized events, sudden fear and a sense or urgency. And so last week's headlines that 16 billion passwords leaked in the 'largest ever data breach' hit the jackpot. That this 'opened access' to Apple and Google accounts, the most prized of all, just made it all the sweeter. The fact there's no new data breach impacting Google or Apple or Microsoft or Facebook is beside the point. This is an amalgamation of various breaches, collecting data from multiple sources including infostealers on PCs. But users reading the headlines will not realize and will understandably panic. This highlights the weakness in using passwords to secure accounts. Despite what you've read, the answer is not to reset or change all your passwords. It's to enable two-factor authentication on all your key accounts — especially the likes of Apple, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon. Better still, switch to passkeys where you can. But many everyday users are now at risk from attacks, whether or not their user names and passwords were in any of those breached datasets. Attackers will now send out emails pretending to be from Apple, Google or other brands, warning of the breach and linking to the public headlines and password reset advice. And those emails or texts will helpfully include a password reset link or a helpline number to call. We've already seen multiple attacks on Apple and Google users, with fake support emails or calls or texts warning that accounts are compromised and passwords need to be reset. These recent headlines are a surprise gift to those attackers. And so, a timely reminder that no major tech brand — Google, Apple, Microsoft and Facebook included — will ever reach out to you about an account security problem or to reset a password. If you receive any such message or call, it's an attack. Period. Google has asked me in the past to 'please reiterate to your readers that Google will not contact you to reset your password or troubleshoot account issues.' The same is true for all those others. It never happens. As the FBI says, 'legitimate customer, security, or tech support companies will not initiate unsolicited contact with individuals." Even if a message is so plausible that you can't ignore it, you must still delete it and access your account using the usual means. Online or using your app. If there's a password issue you'll be directed to a reset option. There won't be. Similarly, if you receive a call or a message to call back, do not respond. Access your account as normal. Google and Apple account details are the most valuable, granting access to many apps and services and the mobile phones that control our lives. But treat any messages from Microsoft or Facebook or any other brand in the wake of this 'breach' the same way. The key advice — to add 2FA or passkeys — will protect you even if a breach is new. The final advice is to avoid SMS 2FA — use another method if you can.
