Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Etah Shyam Narain Singh said, 'Police had been deployed along a shorter, designated route for the wedding procession, but the barat took a different path through the village.' 'A few individuals from the Thakur community objected. Police reached the spot, intervened, and the procession continued under police protection.'
'After covering a short distance, a loud sound was heard; some believed it could be a gunshot or a stone being thrown. The injured constable was given medical attention and is out of danger,' the SSP added.
Senior officials, including Additional SP Rajkumar Singh, SDM Jaleshwar Bhavana Vimal, and Circle Officer Gyanendra Pratap Singh, reached the village to assess the situation.
'The police force remained in the village until all wedding rituals were completed and the 'vidai' (departure of the bride) took place peacefully,' SSP Singh said.
Station house officer (SHO) Awagarh, Akhilesh Kumar, confirmed that the situation was brought under control quickly. 'Police were immediately dispatched after reports of stone pelting,' he said.
Family members of the groom expressed gratitude to the police administration. The groom's uncle said the wedding was completed without further disturbance due to timely police intervention.

Dhakpura village under Awagarh police station limits in Etah district remained tense on Sunday (June 22, 2025) after a marriage procession of a Dalit family was obstructed and allegedly attacked by some individuals of dominant caste on Saturday (June 21, 2025) night. While passing through the settlement of a particular community (Rajput), verbal altercation took place. Police reached the spot to control the situation. In the melee, someone from the crowd threw stones at the police injuring a constable. We have registered an FIR against both the sides and investigating the matter through video footage. However, the marriage happened peacefully,' said Gyanendra Pratap Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) to The Hindu. People belonging to Dalit community alleged that attempts were made by some individuals from the dominant caste group to forcefully turn back the marriage procession and threatened not to pass through the community settlement, leading to the incident. Local Dalits alleged of threats and demanded police to take action and provide security. In the past too, western and central U.P. districts have seen many such instances where Dalit marriage processions were obstructed by dominant social groups. In multiple occasions, police and administration have intervened to allow the procession pass peacefully.

Bhopal: A shocking case of caste violence and lawlessness has emerged from Lalpur village under Karera tehsil in Shivpuri district, Madhya Pradesh, where four upper-caste men - recently released from jail - allegedly stormed the house of a Dalit former sarpanch. They had fired nine rounds in air, and assaulted a woman and a young man with the butt of a gun, leaving both injured. According to the victim, Ajmer Singh Parihar, the former sarpanch of Lalpur, the attack is rooted in an old rivalry. The men had been in jail after attacking the same family. They launched the current attack after being released on bail. Around a year-and-a-half ago, a dispute erupted between the two families over DJ music during a local event, which has since snowballed into a prolonged feud. Land-related tensions have further escalated the conflict. On the day of the incident, Nahar Singh Thakur, along with his three brothers, arrived at the former sarpanch's home and began indiscriminate firing into the air. Following the gunfire, the assailants reportedly beat up a woman and a young man, using the butt of their firearms. Both sustained injuries and required medical attention. The chilling footage of the firing has intensified public outrage and added to the pressure on local law enforcement. Ajmer Singh told NDTV that this was not the first attack. "They attacked my brother on June 3 as well. We had filed a case under the SC/ST Act, and the police had sent them to jail. But now they're out - and they came back to attack us again." The local police have confirmed that a case has been registered under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and attempt to murder. The authorities have assured that the accused will face strict legal action.
