The city of Abilene's Stormwater Services Division regularly works to maintain compliance with state and federal regulations for stormwater management and water quality protection.
Due to these regulations, city employees must make efforts to clean up creeks, streets and drainage systems to prevent pollution to the city's water supply.
Abilene residents pay a monthly stormwater utility fee which pays for maintenance and improvement to the stormwater drainage system and other stormwater activities.
There are numerous scheduled projects for the week of April 19-25, including street sweeping, mowing, tree trimming and drainage maintenance.
Here is an overview of the projects for the upcoming week.
Creek channel maintenance of Buttonwillow Creek from Chimney Rock Road to Robertson Drive.

Lovina completes sewing Verana's wedding dress and focuses on finishing last-minute chores

It is a nice sunny Sunday afternoon with a pleasant temperature of 75 degrees. It is great porch sitting weather. We attended church services this morning hosted by our neighbors. My cousin Lovina, her husband Pete and some of their families were there. It was good to visit with her again. I was surprised to see her. Cousin Lovina's daughter is getting married in July so we both are extra busy in our lives at the moment. I was surprised to hear this is the sixth of her children getting married. She has eighteen grandchildren. I don't know why I forget that while our family is growing, others also have children getting married and having children. It's probably because we don't see each other often and that reality doesn't sink in right away. Lovina's Dad, Chris, was my mother's only brother. We spent a lot of our childhood days together. We would help each other butcher hogs or cook apple butter in large quantities. Lovina and Pete live on Uncle Chris and Lizzie's farm. Lots of memories of years gone by. Yesterday was a busy workday here. A lot of jobs were completed for the upcoming wedding of daughter Verena and Daniel Ray. Daniel Ray's family and all of our family assisted with our work. The house siding was power washed, the pole barn was washed out well, flower and garden beds weeded, and sidewalks, pavement, and cement were all power washed. Windows, doors, cabinets, and walls were cleaned in the pole barn. Basement and breezeway windows were also cleaned. The younger children scrubbed the porch railings. Trimming was done around the fence lines, etc. We sure appreciated all of their help. Joe grilled forty pounds of chicken for lunch. I made creamed potatoes and dinner rolls to go along with that. Desserts were brought in. Friday evening most of our family had supper at daughter Loretta and Dustin's. We enjoyed spaghetti, banana poppers, grilled whole chicken, chips, applesauce, cookies, and cake. I had washed a lot of my clothes that day plus finished with my sewing, so it was a treat to not cook supper. Plus, I got to enjoy some time with my children and grandchildren while not working. Little Kylie is now five months and is at such a fun age. She's a real chatterbox. She weighs thirteen pounds now. She's a petite little girl. I sewed my son Kevin a new pair of pants for the wedding. I finished my dress, cape, and apron and also sewed my daughter Verena's wedding dress. She will wear a colonial blue colored wedding dress with a white cape and apron. The moms will wear dresses in a color called happy teal. The cooks will wear royal blue, and the sisters will wear a peacock color. The table waiter girls will wear aqua. This coming Wednesday my daughters and daughter in-law will come help do the last-minute cleaning. We have a new garage door ordered and the plans are to install it Tuesday evening. We also want to stain the ramp, steps, and the garden beds. Our to-do list is gradually getting jobs crossed off. The cook wagon, cooler, and wedding supply wagon will all come on Friday. On Saturday we will set the tables for the wedding. We usually can seat around 350 at one setting. This is a lot of plates, glasses, silverware, coffee cups, serving bowls, etc. to unpack. The wedding wagon owners usually want you to take a count of how many of each item there is then it is recounted when it's put back in. If anything gets lost or broken, then we have to pay the cost of it. On the bright side though we don't have to borrow dishes, stoves, etc. for the wedding. When Joe and I were married we didn't have the wedding wagons available to rent and everything was borrowed. Daughter Elizabeth will have her thirty-first birthday on Saturday, June 14. I wish her many more happy, healthy years. She was our first born and we named her after my mother. God bless you dear daughter on your birthday and always. On Saturday, Aug. 2, I will be at the Farmer's Market in South Bend, Indiana, from 8 to 11 a.m. for a book signing. I also will have books there to sell. The market is located at 1105 Northside Blvd., South Bend. I will be seated near the main office. I hope to meet some of you there! God bless! Shoppers say this 'fantastic' Columbia rain jacket is 'perfect' for muggy summer days. I put it to the test — and it's on sale

I'm a mom of two, so my summer weekends are spent on jaunts through the woods and bike rides by the lake. My kids don't care if it's pouring rain, super windy or bone-chillingly cold. It's all about "Mama, let's go!" I usually throw on a T-shirt and sunglasses, but on a recent Toronto Harbourfront bike ride, I threw my Columbia Arcadia II windbreaker in my bag — and it ended up saving the day. While it's finally warming up in Ontario, the wind still made things chilly by the lake, so I was grateful for the added protection the lightweight coverup provided. Did I mention it started to rain? I secured the hood over my bike helmet and remained dry and comfortable. And it's not just me who loves this lightweight rain jacket. While visiting a few weeks back, my mom, who lives in New England, borrowed it for a rainy walk and ended up asking if I could order one for her as well. As she handed me her credit card, she said, "You better get one for your sister too, otherwise she's certain to borrow mine indefinitely." Oh, Mom, how well you know us. Since purchasing this waterproof jacket almost a month ago, I've carried it with me frequently. I now understand the rave reviews and why shoppers are in love with this "fantastic" and "perfect" rain jacket that's lightweight enough for wet summer days. The best part? The jacket is currently 25 per cent off — bringing the price down to under $100. This lightweight and breathable jacket is a must-have for summer. The mesh lining of this lightweight jacket offers the perfect amount of breathable protection and comfort in damp weather — even on hot, muggy summer days. It's unique Omni-Tech fabric prevents any moisture from seeping in, ensuring you stay dry all day. The jacket falls slightly below the waist, which means it doesn't ride up, and the adjustable storm hood keeps water out. The drawcord hem and adjustable cuffs offer an even more custom fit, and the chin guard at the top of the zipper helps protect your face from chaffing. Low on space in your carry-on or backpack? No problem. This versatile jacket can be packed into its own pocket for added convenience. Offered in standard sizes from XS to XXL and in plus sizes from 1X-3X, this cute jacket comes in several different colourways. Super convenient: Because the jacket can be easily packed up into its hand pocket, I always toss it in my backpack on walks and bike rides. I even brought it with me on a recent work trip, since it took up virtually no space in my carry on. $90 $120 at Columbia Keeps you dry — but not too warm: Canadians know that even in the summer, weather can change at a moment's notice. This jacket provides a great cozy layer to keep wind or rain out, but it's lightweight enough that it doesn't make you sweat in muggy summer weather (the worst feeling!). Love the fit: I ordered my usual size, an XS, and it's a perfect fit. I can easily wear a sweatshirt or layers underneath without the jacket fitting too snug, but it also looks just as good thrown over a tee or a dress. The hood is a hit: The adjustable hood has a little built in mini-brim which keeps the rain from getting into my eyes. I can also wear it over my baseball cap or bike helmet without feeling any discomfort. Inside pockets would be great: I love an inside zip pocket on an outdoor jacket. It would be a nice addition to this near-perfect one. $90 $120 at Columbia ⭐️ 4.6/5 stars 💬 3,000+ reviews 🏅"Perfect jacket" Columbia shoppers are in love with this jacket. More than 2,300 reviewers have given it a perfect 5-star rating, with one customer calling it the "perfect jacket" that's great for "everyday wear." Another reviewer said it's a "must-have" and a "perfect addition" to their "three-season wardrobe." They especially loved how it "repels wind and rain" and were impressed by how ideal it was was for "layering in cooler weather." $90 $120 at Columbia One reviewer liked the jacket so much that they've purchased two over the years, adding that they never go anywhere without their "fantastic rain jacket." While the majority of shoppers felt the waterproof jacket was a "keeper," one person did say it has "small" arm holes and wasn't great for layering — while I didn't experience this, if you plan to wear this in colder months, you could always size up. This comfortable, compact and lightweight jacket has been with me everywhere over the past few weeks — and IMO, is a great purchase you can really wear year-round, depending on how you layer it. While some shoppers have complained about "small" arm holes and a slim fit, I personally found that it fits true to size with some breathing room. I wish it had an inside zip pocket to store a few bucks or a credit card, but the roomy outer pockets do a pretty stellar job. My favourite part? The breathable mesh lining and adjustable hood, which really make it perfect for whatever Canadian summer throws at you.
