Sheffield city centre begging and street drinking ban to begin
A ban on city centre street drinking, begging and other anti-social behaviour in Sheffield is set to begin.The public space protection order (PSPO), which was approved by the council last year, comes into force on Monday.Under the rules, those caught indulging in certain activities in a defined area, such as urinating in the street, drug use and loitering, could be fined up to £100.Supt Paul Ferguson, from South Yorkshire Police, said existing legislation meant issues in the city could not be challenged "robustly".
He said the new powers would "be used proportionately and progressively with the aim of preventing harm to individuals and the wider community".A report to Sheffield City Council last year suggested a PSPO was needed for the "continuous and unreasonable" anti-social behaviour in parts of the city centre.Just over two thirds of 1,205 individuals surveyed supported the introduction of the order, along with 67 out of 77 organisations.Kurtis Crossland, chair of the council leisure committee, said: "[The order] is about protecting people and stopping anti-social behaviour that might make anyone feel unsafe or insecure."Tim Renshaw, of the Archer Project, previously said the homeless charity was working with the council and police around the PSPO.He said: "We are working with them to say, 'how can we make it a support system rather than something just about enforced displacement?'"Is it an opportunity to build support, or is it just going to become something to stop people from seeing anti-social behaviour - we'll see."

Police name man wanted over death of teenager in Sheffield hit-and-run
Police have named a man wanted on suspicion of murdering a teenager in a hit-and-run crash who they say is "actively evading" capture. Detectives want to speak to Zain Ahmed, 22, following the death of 16-year-old Abdullah Yaser Abdullah Al Yazidi on 4 June. Abdullah was walking along Staniforth Road, in Darnall, Sheffield, when he was hit by a car which left the scene. He died in hospital. A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: "Extensive work to locate Ahmed has been carried out, including enquiries with his family members and associates, visits to more than a dozen addresses, and numerous other tactics. "We are now wanting to hear from one anyone who has seen or spoken to him recently, or knows where may be staying. "We believe Ahmed knows he is wanted and is actively evading our officers." Three men have already been charged with Abdullah's murder and three counts of attempted murder in relation to claims the car was driven at three e-bike riders before it collided with Abdullah. One of the riders, an 18-year-old man, suffered serious injuries after being hit. Ahmed, from Sheffield, is Asian, thin, with dark medium length hair and a short beard. He has links to Sheffield, Worksop and Birmingham.

CCTV images appeal in Sheffield Tinsley Canal murder probe
CCTV images of a man who was later found dead in a canal in Sheffield have been released by police as they try to trace his last body of the 39-year-old man was recovered from the Tinsley Canal near Staniforth Road in Darnall at about 19:15 BST on Tuesday 10 June.A 35-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of his murder had since been released on bail, a South Yorkshire Police spokesperson Ch Insp Mark Oughton said it was hoped the images of the man, pictured wearing a grey jacket and trousers, light coloured trainers, and carrying a dark Nike rucksack, "may help jog the memory of anyone who was in the area at the time and might have seen the man". "If you were on the canal towpath or the surrounding area between Shirland Lane and Staniforth Road between 16:00 BST and 19:15 BST on Tuesday last week and have any information, please come forward," he said."No piece of information is too small. It could be a vital piece of information that could help our team of detectives progress this investigation."Police said the man who was found dead had attended a police inquiry desk earlier on Tuesday 10 a result, and in line with normal procedure, a referral was made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), the force spokesperson assessment, the IOPC had referred it back to South Yorkshire Police for local investigation, they with information which could help officers investigating the man's death was asked to contact police. Woman jailed after stabbing shop worker during charity box theft
