India Post helps transform geolocation with DIGIPIN
More than 50 years after six-digit Postal Index Number revolutionised mail delivery in India, the Department of Post has rolled out a 10-digit alpha numeric Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN). 'The DIGIPIN is like online maps but only more accurate. Its geolocation is accurate up to 4 metres as it generates latitude and longitude. While the PIN code covered a large area (average area of around 170 sq. km per Pincode), the DIGIPIN narrows it down to a narrow grid,' Chief Post Master of General Post Office, Hyderabad Circle, Y. Prasad explained. The 10- digit alpha-numeric code represents geographic coordinates, developed by creating a uniform 4x4 metre grid of the country. The DIGIPIN is a collaborative effort of India Post, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad, National Remote Sensing Centre and Indian Space Research Organisation. 'The PIN code was used for sorting mail. But its usage was limited as many people did not care to write it down and much of the addressing and delivery was down to local knowledge and information. The DIGIPIN is a machine-readable code that can help mail delivery even when drones will be deployed for the purpose,' said Mr. Prasad. With enhanced location accuracy, DIGIPIN is expected to be very useful during emergencies as it can generate precise geographic coordinates ensuring faster response times. However, as the DIGIPIN is a latitude and longitude based grid its use for multi-storeyed building complexes in urban areas is likely to be a challenge. The DIGIPIN is part of the IT 2.0 rollout of the India Post where it will be integrated with mobile devices provided to the staff for carrying out online postal, financial and insurance transactions. In the pipeline is a digital address layer, similar to the UPI ID, which has helped eliminate the recall and use of banking information. The digital address is expected to allow users to generate unique and customised labels (such as username@domain) to represent their DIGIPIN and descriptive addresses and manage this information. Interestingly, the 4 X 4 grid of India encompasses areas in neighbouring countries of Pakistan, Myanmar and Bangladesh and generates the DIGIPIN for areas in those countries as well.

Push for integration of India Post's DIGIPIN into key govt. departments
Hyderabad Chief Postmaster General of Telangana Postal Circle P.V.S. Reddy met Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao on Friday, and proposed the integration of India Post's DIGIPIN platform into key government departments to improve services, particularly in rural and underserved areas. Mr. Reddy spoke about 'Know Your PIN Code' and 'Know Your DIGIPIN' initiatives and urged the government to embed DIGIPIN into the operational frameworks of departments such as Disaster Response, Health, Police, Civil Supplies, and Revenue. He emphasised its robustness and cited scenarios such as highway accidents, where the 4m x 4m geo-coding enabled by DIGIPIN allows emergency responders to pinpoint exact location, when callers are unable to describe them, ensuring timely assistance. In flood relief operations, the platform helps authorities accurately tag and reach affected households, enabling targeted delivery of essentials without ambiguity. He touched upon the ongoing co-location of post offices in Gram Panchayats. Thus far, 1,014 have been co-located, and he requested further instructions to District Collectors to facilitate relocation of the remaining 4,429. He also called for expedited land mutation of Postal Department properties. The Chief Secretary responded positively.

How India Post found a money-spinner in Goa tourism
In north Goa, India's first such pick-up service on wheels for collection of consignments and parcels dispatched by international tourists has generated revenues of over Rs 24.73 lakh for the department of posts. The pilot project launched on January 14 had handled 594 international and 637 domestic consignments by the end of May.A senior official from India Post says international tourists who spend time in Goa choose to send clothes, handicrafts and other purchases back home using postal services. 'We send the van to their doorstep to collect the parcel and pack it,' he adds. The van has a crew of two—a driver and a booking staff. Every week, from Monday to Saturday, they follow a designated route that includes Candolim, Calangute, Anjuna, Morjim, Arambol and Assagao in north the service was initially meant to cover foreign tourists, the response was so encouraging that it was extended to domestic consignments as well.R.P. Patil, director, postal services, Goa region, says the response to the pilot project was good. A bulk of the foreign tourists who have used the initiative to send parcels abroad are from Russia, followed by those from countries like Israel and the United Kingdom. The department has kept the service running even after the tourist season ended in May because of the persisting demand at some collection points. International tourists usually stay in Goa from October to May. Before launching the service, the authorities distributed pamphlets door-to-door to build awareness on the initiative. In an experimental run from April 24 to May 27, 2024, 58 parcels were picked up, including 25 international consignments, which brought in revenue of Rs 2.44 lakh, and 31 domestic parcels that generated revenue of Rs 23, officials also conducted a market survey with potential vendors, shopkeepers, packaging agents, resorts and small exporters. Marketing executives also visited offices, houses and shops of such customers before launching the pilot adds that they plan to launch this service in south Goa, too, around October- November this year and had begun testing the waters. Officials say this could cover tourist spots like Colva, Benaulim and 2023, Goa saw 8.1 million domestic and 453,000 foreign tourists. The numbers went up to 9.94 million domestic tourists and around 468,000 international tourists in 2024. 'While domestic tourist footfall increased by 22 per cent, foreign tourist footfall increased by 3 per cent. These statistics unmistakably indicate a robust growth in Goa's tourism sector, reaffirming its position as a most preferred tourist destination.'The department of tourism has said tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2025 have grown by 10.5 per cent year on year as compared to the same period in 2024.
