By Kevin Buckland TOKYO (Reuters) -The Japanese yen, normally one of the most sought after safe havens in times of geopolitical stress, has dropped 2.4% against the U.S. dollar and 1.4% against the Swiss franc since Israel launched missile attacks against Iranian nuclear and military targets on June 13. CONTEXT Japan imports almost all its oil, meaning the spike in crude since the start of the conflict threatens to worsen the country's trade balance, diminishing the yen's appeal. When Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the yen weakened against the dollar on the same day and then lost some 11.5% over March and April. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Speculative positioning is still heavily skewed towards a stronger yen, potentially foreshadowing a major shift by hedge funds as they cover those positions. The yen exchange rate has a knock-on effect for Japanese stocks as well, with a weaker yen tending to support the market because it increases the value of overseas revenue for the country's heavyweight exporters. However, the effect may be short-lived because of the jump in manufacturing costs from higher energy prices. For Japan's unpopular government too, a weak yen fans inflation when people are already struggling with higher prices, particularly for rice. That's not a good omen ahead of crucial upper house elections next month. KEY QUOTES "A rise in crude oil prices causes a deterioration not only in Japan's trade balance but also its terms of trade, so it fundamentally acts to weaken the yen," Citi analysts wrote in a recent client note, while reiterating forecasts for the yen to weaken to 150 per dollar by September. In the U.K., supply levels have been significantly better, with more frequent Switch 2 restocks, some of which have lasted for hours, if not multiple days. U.K. gamers shouldn't have much trouble buying a Switch this week. The Nintendo Switch 2 costs $449 / £395 standalone or $499 / £429 bundled with a copy of the popular launch game, Mario Kart World. My Nintendo Store is using an invite system to allocate its available Switch 2 stock. You will need to meet specific criteria, including having a Nintendo Switch Online account and then be selected and sent an invite to order the console. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Nintendo Store Antonline's Switch 2 listings have a "coming soon" message. This could be a sign that the tech retailer is planning to restock the console in the near future, though that message has been there quite a while now, so it's a little puzzling. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Antonline Newegg's Nintendo Switch 2 pages are live, but there's currently no stock. Newegg may restock the console soon, but nothing is confirmed yet, so this is another one to watch closely for now. Mario Kart Bundle: $499 @ Newegg Sam's Club has a listing page for the Nintendo Switch 2, which currently advises the console is "coming soon." This could be an indication that the retailer is planning to take Switch 2 orders in the near future, so be sure to watch this space. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is practically guaranteed to be the most in-demand Switch 2 accessory, and it packs a suitable upgrade over its predecessor adding a headphone jack, the new "C" button, and customizable back buttons.
