Meet Mulan and Aladdin star Lea Salonga's trans son Nic Chien: at 19, he's following his mum into musical theatre and will appear alongside Salonga in Into the Woods

Broadway legend Lea Salonga is opening up about her relationship with her trans son Nic Chien, 19, who she shares with husband Robert Chien. Speaking to People, the
Filipina star got candid about Nic's transition journey, advising parents to 'meet your kid where they are'. Nic was assigned female at birth, came out as transmasculine at 14, and began taking testosterone in January. Throughout the process, Salonga was a pillar of support for her child, although she at first thought he might be non-binary. Calling this response an 'OK reaction', Nic shared that because his family is 'very accepting', he wasn't 'super afraid' to come out.

Meanwhile, Salonga – who provided the singing voice for Jasmine in the original Aladdin (1992), and for the titular character in Mulan (1998) and Mulan II (2004) – is back on Broadway with Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends. The revue features several numbers dedicated to the late musical theatre icon, but the Miss Saigon star has made one her own. 'Loving You', she says, reminds her of her son, and she dresses in a purple jacket for the performance as a nod to Nic's favourite colour.

US woman sues Singapore Airlines over alleged allergy oversight that led to emergency landing

Singapore Airlines is facing a lawsuit in the United States after a New York paediatrician claimed she suffered a severe allergic reaction mid-flight when she was served shrimp despite having warned cabin crew of her shellfish allergy. The incident forced the aircraft to divert to Paris for emergency medical care. In a complaint filed on Tuesday in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York, Dr Doreen Benary alleged that her explicit allergy disclosure was overlooked during meal service on Singapore Airlines flight SQ026 from Frankfurt to New York on October 8. Benary, 41, was flying business class and had informed the crew of her allergy to shrimp after boarding, according to the court filing. Nonetheless, she was allegedly served a dish containing the allergen and became ill shortly after eating it. 'Nearly immediately after ingesting a portion of said meal, Plaintiff detected the presence of shrimp and began to feel ill,' the complaint states. When she questioned the crew, a flight attendant 'admitted that she had made an error and apologised'. The flight was subsequently diverted to Paris, where Benary was taken by ambulance and treated at two different medical facilities. Filed under the Montreal Convention – the international treaty that governs liability in international air travel – the lawsuit accuses Singapore Airlines of negligence, arguing the incident meets the legal threshold of an 'accident', defined as an 'unexpected or unusual event or occurrence external to the passenger'.

F1: The Movie review – Brad Pitt in fun but clichéd motor-racing drama

3/5 stars Watching F1: The Movie is like being hurled back into 1980s Hollywood, for better and for worse. The film, about a veteran driver and a rookie in a failing F1 team, sees producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Days of Thunder) and director Joseph Kosinski reunited after Top Gun: Maverick , starring Tom Cruise. But instead of Cruise, this new film stars Brad Pitt. Play Pitt plays Sonny Hayes, a former F1 driver who disappeared from the circuit following a crash at the 1993 Spanish Grand Prix. In the years since, he has scraped by as a New York cabby, developed a gambling habit and had numerous failed marriages. He gets another shot at the big time when his former teammate Ruben (Javier Bardem) invites him to drive for his failing F1 team, APX GP. Sonny, it turns out, has retained his skill and proves to be a fantastic driver who plays by his own rules.
