Labuan students make island proud with world-topping IGCSE maths scores

LABUAN: Labuan students have made the island proud as two of its achievers, Sharaneshri Saravanan and Nicole Chia Xin Dong earned the 'Top in the World' title for International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Mathematics in the November 2024 exam series, each securing a flawless 100 percent score.
The two high achievers are students of Labuan International School (LIS), with Nicole having been part of the school since primary level, while Sharaneshri began her academic journey there in Kindergarten.
The awards ceremony took place yesterday at Sunway University, Selangor, where the honours were presented by Kanjna Paranthaman, Country Regional Director for Southeast Asia and Pacific, International Education, Cambridge University Press & Assessment.
LIS principle Fadlin Aimuni said their exceptional performance not only highlights individual excellence but also underscores the school's strong academic foundation.
"The prestigious award is conferred by Cambridge Assessment International Education to students who achieve the highest standard mark globally in a single subject.
"Both students are exemplary role models, excelling not only in academics but also in sports, music, and debate, actively representing LIS in various competitions.
"Their achievements reflect the school's holistic approach to education that nurtures excellence across mind, body, and character," she told Bernama.
She said this record-setting milestone has set a new standard of achievement for LIS and serves as a powerful inspiration to the next generation of learners in Labuan.
"This is more than just a top academic result, it's a moment of pride for the whole LIS community.

Original Structure Of Kota Melaka Fortress Unearthed At Taman Larangan

MELAKA, June 18 (Bernama) -- The legendary Kota Melayu Melaka, long celebrated in historical accounts and Malay-Nusantara chronicles as a grand and formidable Malay fort city, has once again come to light following the discovery of the original alignment of the Bastion Hendrica Louisa wall at Bukit Melaka. Registered archaeologist from the Department of National Heritage, Drs Mohd Nasruddin Rahman, said the discovery was made during an excavation at the base of the Taman Larangan stairs, located in front of the Melaka Sultanate Palace in Banda Hilir. The uncovered structure is believed to be part of the original fort, which was later buried beneath new fortifications built by the Portuguese and later upgraded by the Dutch and British during the colonial period. 'This discovery is significant as it confirms the existence of the original Melaka Fort and helps trace the early layout of its walls. The remains include part of the Bastion Hendrica Louisa, which once served as a key southern defence point against attacks from both land and sea. 'Interestingly, the fort was also protected by a moat surrounding the outer wall, estimated to be about five metres wide and deep,' he told Bernama. The excavation, carried out from May 22 to 30, also revealed structural features consistent with bastion designs found in 18th-century Dutch maps. Drs Mohd Nasruddin stressed the importance of protecting the site from being lost to modern development, especially in the Banda Hilir area. He called for strong cooperation from the state government, the Melaka Museum Corporation (Perzim), the Department of National Heritage (JWN), and local authorities. 'This effort aligns with the vision of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, who is committed to ensuring that Melaka's historical legacy is properly documented, preserved, and shared with the public to highlight the glory of the Melaka Sultanate before colonisation,' he said. He also recommended further archaeological work to fully uncover the oval-shaped bastion wall and suggested partially reconstructing a section of the fort wall, similar to what was done at Middlesbrough Bastion.

BUKIT MERTAJAM, June 21 (Bernama) -- Two youngsters who got lost in the forest while hiking at Bukit Cherok Tok Kun, famed for its biggest buttress trees in Penang, here today were swiftly rescued by the fire brigade, thanks to a handy smartphone. Assistant operations director of the Penang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), John Sagun Francis, said the victims sent their location via WhatsApp at 1.16 pm to his department. 'A team from the Bukit Mertajam Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) was deployed to the location, where five personnel were involved in the search and rescue operation for the teenagers, with the assistance of the public.
