
Walking Meetings Are a Thing: What Planners Need to Know
Planners are finding that meeting and networking while walking is not just good for your health — it also increases productivity and creativity.
Walking meetings date all the way to Ancient Greece and Apple CEO Steve Jobs known for them around the company's Palo Alto campus. Now they're having a moment at major events.
Destination Canada held a 'Walk 'n Talk' meeting in January during PCMA's Convening Leaders at Houston's Discovery Green park.
The session, which was intended to refresh and inspire attendees, reinforced Destination Canada's brand mission: 'Leave Inspired, Not Tired.' The special guest was Lori McCarthy, a cultural storyteller and founder of Food Culture Place, who led participants through a grounding practice and a discussion on sustainable event planning.
The 60 meeting planner walkers were able to access the session on their phones using the conference app.
Virginie De Visscher, executive director, business events at Destination Canada, said it was such a success that they are discussing hosting similar walks in the future. "It showed how simple design shifts like taking a breakout session outdoors can boost engagement, spark creativity, and leave delegates genuinely recharged.'
Drink 'n Walk
Dianne Heffernan, chief events officer/vice president, CCE Global Meetings & Events, came up with the idea of a walking cocktail reception, with F&B stations placed along the High Line in New York City, for a group of 40 neuroscientists attending a Fellowship Award meeting and dinner.
'We were using The Standard, and as I looked out the window of the event space, I saw the High Line and wanted to do something completely different. I worked with a local tour guide service and a caterer who was willing to come up with NYC-themed hors d' oeuvres.'
Attendees loved it, she said. 'I'm thinking of doing it again for a SITE Northeast chapter event.'
Research from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine points to other benefits as well. Not only do walking meetings contribute to participants' health, but nature and changes of scenery trigger new neuro-pathways in the brain, sparking new ideas and solutions to problems. Walking meetings can also break down boundaries, encourage engagement, and increase productivity.
Some Ground Rules
Anne Bach Krog Iversen, chief DNA & culture officer at TimeXtender, is a fan of walking meetings, but encourages planners to plan ahead as they would for an indoor meeting.
Among her tips:
• Choose a suitable route ahead of time, such as a park or a quiet street, and make sure the path is accessible and safe.
• Record the meeting for attendees who might not be able to physically attend.
• Check the weather and share it with everyone so they can dress appropriately. Remind them to bring comfortable shoes. Have a back-up plan if the weather doesn't cooperate.
• Set a clear agenda and align specific discussion points to landmarks or turns in your route to keep the conversation moving and on track.
• Supply water at the start and don't allow stops for people who might want a coffee or a cold drink.
'Treat this time with the same respect you would if you were in a meeting room,' she said.

Apple is reportedly considering the acquisition of Perplexity AI
Apple's executives are thinking of acquiring Perplexity AI both to get more talent and to be able to offer an AI-based search engine in the future, according to Bloomberg . Adrian Perica, Apple's head of mergers and acquisitions, has reportedly already talked about the idea with services SVP Eddy Cue and the company's top decision-makers with it comes to its AI efforts. It's early stages, however: Apple has yet to talk to Perplexity about a bid, and the internal talks may not even lead to a formal offer. The executives also reportedly discussed an alternative, wherein instead of buying Perplexity outright, it'll team up with the AI company instead. Either way, the idea is to develop an AI search engine powered by Perplexity and to integrate Perplexity's technology into Siri. While Apple has yet to make a formal offer, Bloomberg says it met several times with Perplexity over the past few months. In May, Cue revealed that Apple discussed a possible Safari-integration with Perplexity while on the stand for Google's ongoing Search antitrust case. Cue took the stand due to Apple's long-standing deal with Google to make its search engine the default on the iPhone. (In turn, Apple gets billions of dollars a year — $18 billion in 2021 — from the arrangement.) Cue didn't share any definitive plans, however, including the possibility of an acquisition. If regulators order Apple to end its partnership with Google, purchasing Perplexity would make it easier for the company to develop an AI-based search engine. In addition, it would allow the company to acquire talent needed to be able to catch up with other companies when it comes to artificial intelligence. Apple, like Meta, has been scouting for new AI talent. Bloomberg says it's even competing against the Facebook owner to hire Daniel Gross, the founder of AI company Safe Superintelligence Inc. The company does seem to need help to be able to release the AI features it wants to provide its users. A few months ago, for instance, Apple delayed the rollout of a more powerful Siri that was a key component of its original pitch for Apple Intelligence.

A girl who has spent the first four years of her life learning to manage with just one arm is finally getting her dream come true, as she prepares to get her new prosthetic. Life certainly hasn't been easy for Kaisley Hernandez, 4, who was unexpectedly born with one full arm. On her right side, her upper arm developed, but she doesn't have a forearm. It wasn't caused by amniotic band syndrome, but rather, doctors believe that her arm just stopped developing. Indeed, her mom, Destiny Hernandez, 30, told Newsweek that it came as quite the surprise because "no one knew until she was born." The limb difference didn't show up on any of her scans, so it was only when Kaisley was delivered that doctors announced that "she has a deformity." However, Kaisley, of Lubbock Texas, has refused to let her disability get her down and she has become incredibly resilient in the face of adversity. "We have come across her being bullied, and that was hard to see, but we just tell her that not everyone understands, and some people just aren't kind." Of course, having two arms would make life so much easier, and it turns out that Kaisley is finally getting her wish. In May 2025, the 4-year-old got her "nubby" molded for a brand-new activity prosthetic arm, which is sure to improve her life dramatically. Destiny captured the incredible moment when her daughter got the mold taken and shared the video on TikTok (@dessshernandez). The video has amazed and delighted social media users, leading to more than 13.3 million views and over 1.5 million likes on TikTok at the time of writing. During the appointment, the doctor asked Kaisley who her favorite cartoon character is, and there was only one answer for this Encanto fan: Mirabel. The sheer joy as she told the doctor she'd like Encanto-themed fabric to line her prosthetic left her mom fighting back tears. As the cast was formed around her upper arm, Kaisley was "overwhelmed with emotions." While she did seem nervous, her mom explained that it was just because she couldn't feel her nubby while it was in the mold, and it was such an unknown experience for her to face at such a young age. Thankfully, her mom and brothers were on hand to talk her through it and show her what an exciting opportunity this will be. "She is so excited, and she tells everyone 'I'm getting a robot arm.' For now, we are sticking with the activity arm until she gets older and then she can decide which direction she wants to go—there are so many options to choose from," Destiny said. The family will return on July 14 for the finishing touches. After sharing Kaisley's journey on social media, Destiny has been amazed by the supportive response. She never imagined the video would go viral, but she's glad so many people can learn about her daughter's experience, and they can cheer her on from across the world. "We just want Kaisley to have confidence, and we let her know that it's okay to ask for help," Destiny told Newsweek. Many social media users were brought to tears by Kaisley's reaction to the prosthetic mold, and the online reaction has generated over 7,000 comments on the viral post so far. One comment reads: "Poor baby, she has the best big brothers." Another TikTok user wrote: "You can see the gravity of it all just weighing on her. She's so little, but she understands it means things will be different." While another commenter added: "Bless her little heart.
