ASEAN's Strength Lies In Neutrality And Engagement, Says Anwar

Barnama15-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said ASEAN's ability to maintain neutrality and engage all major powers without being drawn into geopolitical rivalry is rooted in mutual respect and inclusive diplomacy.
This approach, he noted, has enabled the region to remain peaceful and economically resilient amid rising global tensions.
'ASEAN, as a whole, adopts a policy of centrality. We trade with all, and we should be friends with all,' he said during a question-and-answer session following his public lecture titled 'ASEAN in a Multipolar World: Perspectives from Malaysia' at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) on Thursday.

The session was streamed on Anwar's Facebook page.
Anwar added that ASEAN must remain confident in charting its path while upholding a consistent foreign policy approach in dealing with the United States (US), China and other global players.
He also noted Malaysia's approach to overlapping maritime claims in the region, including in the South China Sea, was anchored in peaceful dialogue and cooperation.
'We have issues with several countries -- Thailand, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam -- but we resolve them through negotiations or joint development efforts. We don't go to war,' he said.
Meanwhile, Anwar said Malaysia had written to US President Donald Trump and China's leadership to propose holding ASEAN-US and ASEAN-China summits during Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship.
'That is what geopolitical relations are about -- engaging with all,' he said.

Top adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader says uranium stockpile intact despite US strikes

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump said American forces bombed Iran's Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites. 23 Jun 2025 08:59am This handout satellite image courtesy of Maxar Technologies shows cargo trucks postioned near an underground entrance to Iran's Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant (FFEP), in Fordo, Iran on June 19, 2025. (Photo by Satellite image ©2025 Maxar Technologies / AFP) ISTANBUL - A senior adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei confirmed Sunday that Iran's stockpile of enriched uranium is still intact despite US attacks on three nuclear sites, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. "Even if nuclear sites are destroyed, game isn't over, enriched materials, indigenous knowledge, political will remain,' Ali Shamkhani wrote on X. (Photo by / AFP) "With legitimate defence right, political and operational initiative is now with the side that plays smart, avoids blind strikes. Surprises will continue!' he added. The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), Iran's official radio and television broadcaster, reported Sunday that targeted sites had been evacuated before the attack and sensitive nuclear materials were moved to safe locations, without providing details. Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump said American forces bombed Iran's Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites. The US targeted the sites with six bunker-buster bombs dropped on the Fordo facility with B-2 stealth bombers, along with dozens of submarine-launched cruise missile strikes on the Natanz and Isfahan facilities. The attacks came as the latest escalation in a US-backed Israeli military assault on Iran since June 13, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory attacks on Israel. Both sides have reported fatalities and injuries in the exchange of airstrikes. - BERNAMA-ANADOLU More Like This

Malaysians in Iran rely on SMS amid roaming shutdown

Malaysia's Ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar, who led the group, told the media they had to travel by land for about 1,000 kilometres to exit Tehran. 23 Jun 2025 11:04am Malaysia's Ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar (second, left) said roaming services in the country, including WhatsApp, are currently blocked. - Bernama photo SEPANG - As tensions in Iran escalated following Israel's retaliatory strikes, residents in the country were forced to rely on the old-school Short Message Service (SMS) to stay in touch with family members and relevant parties. Malaysia's Ambassador to Iran, Khairi Omar, said roaming services in the country, including WhatsApp, are currently blocked. A group of 24 individuals, including 17 Malaysians, safely touched down at KLIA Terminal 1 after being evacuated from Iran amidst escalating conflict. - Bernama photo "In Iran, SMS communication is still open between local Iranian numbers. Domestically, people can still stay in touch. However, if we try to call an Iranian number from here, it won't go through, as roaming services have been shut down. But calls from Iran to outside the country are still possible. So, we've resorted to the old-fashioned way, text messages, which not many people use anymore. "WhatsApp messages and similar platforms were completely inaccessible, though I believe some access is gradually returning, but still tightly controlled to ensure that sensitive information related to security issues isn't leaked,' he spoke to reporters last night. He arrived from Iran with a group of 24 individuals, comprising 17 Malaysians, six Iranian dependents of Malaysian citizens, and one Singaporean. Khairi said the situation in Iran was volatile, with both foreign nationals and locals equally shocked by the severity of the attack, which he described as drastic. "After a day or two, we began to observe a pattern in the attacks. They were more intense at night, while during the day, it seemed as though both sides had come to a mutual understanding to scale back the assaults. "As we all know, they already identified the targets, and if one side launched a strike on certain facilities, the other side would respond. But we were always on high alert because if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, you could easily find yourself in a situation you definitely wouldn't want to be in,' he said. The government ordered the temporary closure of the Malaysian Embassy in Iran, instructing all embassy personnel in the country to return home immediately. Meanwhile, a trader, Fadhil Yusni, 33, expressed his gratitude at being reunited with his wife, Zainab Ganood, an Iranian national who was visiting her parents. "I panicked because I couldn't reach my wife. Alhamdulillah, tonight I feel grateful. Thank you to the government and the Foreign Ministry for evacuating my wife out of Iran,' he said, adding that he is now finding the best way to help his wife's family leave the conflict-stricken country safely. Tensions erupted on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on several locations across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to retaliate. - BERNAMA
