Inquiry committee submits report on VS illegal trials to Ahmedabad municipal commissioner
Ahmedabad: A five-member AMC committee completed its investigation into the alleged illegal clinical trials at VS Hospital and submitted a report, implicating top doctors in a multi-crore scam. Between 2021 and 2025, 58 unauthorized trials were conducted on over 500 patients in complete violation of rules, with payments from pharmaceutical companies routed to the accounts of senior doctors, instead of the hospital, said sources citing the report. The panel, led by the head of the AMC vigilance department, has reportedly recommended disciplinary action against all responsible parties. The municipal commissioner is now reviewing the report to decide whether a police complaint should be filed. After conducting a preliminary investigation, the municipal commissioner then formed a special five-member inquiry panel on April 19. However, after questions were raised about one panel member's credibility, AMC's in-charge health officer Dr Bhavin Solanki was included in the committee. The probe was overseen by Hina Bhathawala, AMC's vigilance department chief. Earlier, eight doctors, including Dr Rana, were suspended, and a notice was served to the retired hospital superintendent. The committee also recorded statements from Dr Patel, Dr Rana, and other implicated personnel. A source, citing the inquiry report, said, "Over four years, 58 pharmaceutical companies conducted various unregulated vaccine and drug clinical research on more than 500 patients. The companies legally paid Rs 17 to 20 crore, none of which reached the hospital's official accounts. Instead, they were deposited into accounts belonging to Dr Patel, Dr Rana, Dr Shukla, their spouses, and even family HUF accounts. Some payments were allegedly made in cash. "The clinical trials were allegedly conducted using the approval of a private ethical committee instead of seeking clearance from the AMC, the hospital's management board, or the Medical Education Trust." Documents pertaining to these trials were either poorly maintained or deliberately concealed, said sources, drawing from the report. Despite a claim from Dr Patel that Rs 6 crore was deposited into the hospital account, the committee found no supporting documentation.

Chellanam residents intensify protest seeking permanent solution for sea erosion
Kochi: Hundreds of Chellanam residents took out two protest rallies on Friday demanding immediate measures to prevent sea erosion. Expressing solidarity with the people, priests from the Alappuzha and Kochi dioceses held a hunger strike near the Thoppumpady BOT bridge, demanding the construction of a sea wall from Kannamally to Fort Kochi as an immediate solution to the issue. As the monsoon showers intensified, Chellanam experienced the highest ever sea surge in recent years. As more than 500 houses were affected by sea surge, the residents of Kannamaly and Puthanthodu regions of the Chellanam panchayat held a protest on Monday. The protesters also staged a blockade on the Alappuzha-Fort Kochi state highway. The rallies and the hunger strike on Friday were the continuation of these protests under the banner of 'Care Chellanam' collective. The mass rallies that commenced at 3.30pm from Palluruthy and Thoppumpady Santhom Junction concluded at the venue of the hunger strike. While the hunger strike which began at 10am at the BOT Junction was inaugurated by Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council vice-president Joseph Jude, a rally by priests from St Sebastian Church, Thoppumpady, was inaugurated by Kripasanam director Joseph Valiyaveettil. Following coastal residents' protests, the govt allocated Rs 340 crore for constructing a 12.5km sea wall from Chellanam fishing harbour towards the north, but only 7.35km was completed. The area from Puthenthode to Fort Kochi is currently experiencing intense sea erosion and construction has been completely halted. "Many homes here are either partially or completely destroyed, making them uninhabitable. We are expecting high waves next week as the sea becomes more powerful with the new moon. If authorities now send back people from relief camps to homes, they will have to return to the camp again next week. Since the temporary sandbags and geo bags were completely destroyed in the recent sea surge, the high waves expected during the new moon will severely affect the area," said general convenor of Chellanam-Kochi People's Forum V T Sebastian. Forum members also demanded that the govt should provide rental houses or pay rent for those living in damaged houses. The rallies were flagged off by KCBC secretary general Rev Thomas Tharayil and Kerala Latin Catholic Association state president Sherry J Thomas. The concluding meeting was inaugurated by Kottapuram diocese bishop Rev Ambrose Puthenveettil.

Technology will gradually take over manual cleaning work: Minister
Mysuru: In the coming years, technology will gradually take over manual cleaning work, much like how wars are now fought with technology, said HC Mahadevappa, minister for social welfare and Mysuru district minister. Addressing a gathering at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) auditorium on Friday, he urged pourakarmikas (civic workers) to ensure their children are well-educated and aim for higher positions in society. The occasion marked the distribution of permanent appointment order letters to pourakarmikas who are now permanent employees. Out of 10,000 pourakarmikas made permanent across Karnataka, 219 belong to the Mysuru City Corporation. Highlighting the transformation, the minister said that these workers, who earlier earned around Rs 17,000 per month, will now receive double the salary along with full govt benefits. "This permanent status will help workers lead a more dignified life and elevate their families socially and economically," he said.
