Abramovich hopes for 'proper goodbye'

Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich says he wants to return to Stamford Bridge for "a proper goodbye", in his first interview since sanctions forced him to sell the club in 2022.
The oligarch, who the UK Government allege has strong links to Russian president Vladimir Putin, has not spoken since the sale of Chelsea and his last known interview was with Forbes in March 2021.
In an interview in Abu Dhabi in February for the book "Sanctioned" by Nick Purewal, Abramovich ruled out re-investing in Chelsea or, indeed, any other football club.
But he said he wants to return to Stamford Bridge someday.
"Perhaps one day there would be a situation where I could attend a match and say a proper goodbye, but nothing more than that," he is quoted as saying.
He added: "I don't have any interest in any role in a football club, certainly not a professional role."
Abramovich also says he still wants a resolution to the war in Ukraine, insisting his efforts to act as a peacekeeper in talks in Turkey in 2022 were genuine.
This is the first time he has spoken since he sold Chelsea for £2.5bn to Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, who have overseen two underwhelming years before finishing fourth this season to qualify for the Champions League and winning the Conference League.
Boehly, who also part-owns successful baseball franchise the LA Dodgers and basketball team the LA Lakers, said in the book: "If you look at our ambitions for the Dodgers and for the Lakers, you're here to win, and it's our business to win; and we're doing everything we can do to win.
"Our goal with Chelsea is also to win silverware, because we know, and I know, how much it means to the fans. It makes you appreciate again that sport makes people happy, especially when you win. And Chelsea is supposed to win.
"But I really believe that sustained success is an investment, and no matter what business I'm in, or any industry, there are no shortcuts."
Meanwhile, Abramovich's comments have emerged just a week after the UK government threatened to sue him, with proceeds from the sale of the club still stuck in a frozen bank account.
The UK government wants the money to be for Ukrainian humanitarian aid, but "all victims of the war in Ukraine".
Chelsea are also under investigation by the Premier League for alleged irregular payments from Abramovich-era transfer activity.

After all the hype about Cole Palmer taking the No 10 shirt, it was hard to understand why Enzo Maresca seemed so determined to shackle his best player as Chelsea's hopes of reaching the knockout phase of the Club World Cup as winners of Group D were dented by a second-half implosion in which Nicolas Jackson picked up a rash red card for the second time in his past four appearances. Chelsea were dire, with Maresca's tactics weirdly reactive. The Italian compromised Palmer by moving him to the right and defeat leaves Chelsea, who collapsed after taking an early lead, at risk of facing Bayern Munich if they reach the last 16. Maresca's system did not work. It forced Chelsea into containment mode and restricted their attacking talents. Palmer looked out of sorts on the wing, Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández both picked up early bookings for late tackles and although Liam Delap had a sight of goal in the fifth minute the striker found it difficult to make an impact on his full debut. Flamengo were the more aggressive side. Gerson was a dynamo in midfield and the only question was whether they could make their dominance count. They were too rushed in the final third at first and fell behind when Danilo's failure to deal with a speculative punt from James allowed Pedro Neto to steal possession, race through on goal and slip a low finish past Agustín Rossi. Yet Chelsea remained short of purpose and cohesion. Flamengo kept pressing and they almost equalised through Gerson, only for Levi Colwill to clear the midfielder's volley off the line. Advertisement The warning signs were obvious long before the game turned in the 62nd minute. Flamengo made a strong start to the second half, whereas Chelsea remained diffident and sluggish. Gerson and Gonzalo Plata both had chances to punish some awful defending. Plata then found space in the area but saw his rising shot tipped over by Robert Sánchez, who at least compensates for his shaky distribution with sharp reflexes. Attention shifted to the benches. Maresca was passive but Luís was proactive with his substitutions. Bruno Henrique came on for Giorgian de Arrascaeta in the 56th minute and soon made his mark. Chelsea were caught square when Gerson chipped a diagonal ball over Gusto, Plata headed across goal and Bruno Henrique ghosted behind Marc Cucurella to convert at the far post. There was still no response from Chelsea. The Flamengo fans erupted and they were bouncing again when Danilo made it 2-1 in the 65th minute, darting to the near post to head a corner past Sánchez. Humiliation beckoned. Chelsea duly lost their heads in the heat. Jackson, who had come on for Delap in between the Flamengo goals, proceeded to disgrace himself. The indiscipline was staggering when the striker took a heavy touch and planted his studs into Ayrton Lucas's shins, leaving his side to play out the closing stages with 10 men. Chelsea still have work to do when they face Espérance Tunis in their final group game.
