Abramovich hopes for 'proper goodbye'

Yahoo10-06-2025

Former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich says he wants to return to Stamford Bridge for "a proper goodbye", in his first interview since sanctions forced him to sell the club in 2022.
The oligarch, who the UK Government allege has strong links to Russian president Vladimir Putin, has not spoken since the sale of Chelsea and his last known interview was with Forbes in March 2021.
In an interview in Abu Dhabi in February for the book "Sanctioned" by Nick Purewal, Abramovich ruled out re-investing in Chelsea or, indeed, any other football club.
But he said he wants to return to Stamford Bridge someday.
"Perhaps one day there would be a situation where I could attend a match and say a proper goodbye, but nothing more than that," he is quoted as saying.
He added: "I don't have any interest in any role in a football club, certainly not a professional role."
Abramovich also says he still wants a resolution to the war in Ukraine, insisting his efforts to act as a peacekeeper in talks in Turkey in 2022 were genuine.
This is the first time he has spoken since he sold Chelsea for £2.5bn to Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, who have overseen two underwhelming years before finishing fourth this season to qualify for the Champions League and winning the Conference League.
Boehly, who also part-owns successful baseball franchise the LA Dodgers and basketball team the LA Lakers, said in the book: "If you look at our ambitions for the Dodgers and for the Lakers, you're here to win, and it's our business to win; and we're doing everything we can do to win.
"Our goal with Chelsea is also to win silverware, because we know, and I know, how much it means to the fans. It makes you appreciate again that sport makes people happy, especially when you win. And Chelsea is supposed to win.
"But I really believe that sustained success is an investment, and no matter what business I'm in, or any industry, there are no shortcuts."
Meanwhile, Abramovich's comments have emerged just a week after the UK government threatened to sue him, with proceeds from the sale of the club still stuck in a frozen bank account.
The UK government wants the money to be for Ukrainian humanitarian aid, but "all victims of the war in Ukraine".
Chelsea are also under investigation by the Premier League for alleged irregular payments from Abramovich-era transfer activity.

Flamengo stun Chelsea with comeback victory at Club World Cup as Jackson sees red

After all the hype about Cole Palmer taking the No 10 shirt, it was hard to understand why Enzo Maresca seemed so determined to shackle his best player as Chelsea's hopes of reaching the knockout phase of the Club World Cup as winners of Group D were dented by a second-half implosion in which Nicolas Jackson picked up a rash red card for the second time in his past four appearances. How Flamengo made light of the financial gap. The leaders of the Brazilian league were better and more motivated than their English opponents. Chelsea were dire, with Maresca's tactics weirdly reactive. The Italian compromised Palmer by moving him to the right and defeat leaves Chelsea, who collapsed after taking an early lead, at risk of facing Bayern Munich if they reach the last 16. Advertisement Related: Flamengo v Chelsea: Club World Cup updates – live Chelsea only needed to look at Botafogo's shock win over Paris Saint-Germain to appreciate that this was going to be nothing like their sedate victory over Los Angeles FC in front of a low crowd in Atlanta on Monday. None of the South American teams have been pushovers so far. This tournament has genuine meaning for them and it was no surprise that this felt like a home game for Flamengo, whose fans arrived at Lincoln Financial Field ready to make it theirs for the afternoon. Flamengo, who are coached by the former Chelsea left-back Filipe Luís, were lively and combative from the start. Their press was high, they had plenty of speed on the flanks and anyone trying to work out why they average the highest possession in the Brazilian league only had to look at Jorginho rolling back the years against his old side, the Italian exuding calm as he dropped back to receive the ball and shift the tempo with sudden switches of play and quick passes over the top. Advertisement Chelsea had no control. Instead they suffered for long spells. There was a cautious lineup from Maresca, who brought Malo Gusto in at right-back, moved Reece James into midfield and pushed Palmer to the right flank, and there was little flow to the Premier League side's football. Maresca's system did not work. It forced Chelsea into containment mode and restricted their attacking talents. Palmer looked out of sorts on the wing, Moisés Caicedo and Enzo Fernández both picked up early bookings for late tackles and although Liam Delap had a sight of goal in the fifth minute the striker found it difficult to make an impact on his full debut. Flamengo were the more aggressive side. Gerson was a dynamo in midfield and the only question was whether they could make their dominance count. They were too rushed in the final third at first and fell behind when Danilo's failure to deal with a speculative punt from James allowed Pedro Neto to steal possession, race through on goal and slip a low finish past Agustín Rossi. Yet Chelsea remained short of purpose and cohesion. Flamengo kept pressing and they almost equalised through Gerson, only for Levi Colwill to clear the midfielder's volley off the line. Advertisement The warning signs were obvious long before the game turned in the 62nd minute. Flamengo made a strong start to the second half, whereas Chelsea remained diffident and sluggish. Gerson and Gonzalo Plata both had chances to punish some awful defending. Plata then found space in the area but saw his rising shot tipped over by Robert Sánchez, who at least compensates for his shaky distribution with sharp reflexes. Attention shifted to the benches. Maresca was passive but Luís was proactive with his substitutions. Bruno Henrique came on for Giorgian de Arrascaeta in the 56th minute and soon made his mark. Chelsea were caught square when Gerson chipped a diagonal ball over Gusto, Plata headed across goal and Bruno Henrique ghosted behind Marc Cucurella to convert at the far post. There was still no response from Chelsea. The Flamengo fans erupted and they were bouncing again when Danilo made it 2-1 in the 65th minute, darting to the near post to head a corner past Sánchez. Humiliation beckoned. Chelsea duly lost their heads in the heat. Jackson, who had come on for Delap in between the Flamengo goals, proceeded to disgrace himself. The indiscipline was staggering when the striker took a heavy touch and planted his studs into Ayrton Lucas's shins, leaving his side to play out the closing stages with 10 men. Advertisement Jackson's latest indiscretion will raise further questions over his future. He was similarly foolish when he was sent off against Newcastle last month. Maresca, though, was just as unimpressive. He succeeded in neutering Palmer and then took him off when Chelsea needed a goal. The game was over a minute later. There was joy for Flamengo when another substitute, Wallace Yan, took advantage of another ricochet and fired past Sánchez. Chelsea still have work to do when they face Espérance Tunis in their final group game.

Flamengo fightback floors Chelsea at Club World Cup

Bruno Henrique (C) celebrates with teammates after scoring for Flamengo as the Brazilians came from behind to beat Chelsea 3-1 at the Club World Cup on Friday (FRANCK FIFE) Substitute Bruno Henrique played a starring role as Flamengo came roaring back in the second half to beat Chelsea 3-1 at the Club World Cup on Friday, maintaining an impressive record for South American teams so far at the competition. Pedro Neto had given Chelsea the lead in the first half but Flamengo, roared on by their frenzied supporters who made up the majority of the 54,019 crowd, did not deserve to be behind and produced a stunning fightback after the interval. Advertisement Bruno Henrique came off the bench in the 56th minute and equalised for the Brazilian giants just after the hour mark before setting up Danilo to make it 2-1. Chelsea were stunned, and their hopes of pulling level again were effectively destroyed when substitute Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 68th minute. Wallace Yan, also on as a substitute, then sealed the victory for the Rio de Janeiro club, the Brazilian league leaders, when he made it 3-1 late on. With two wins from two at the tournament, Flamengo are now on the brink of qualification for the last 16 from Group D. Chelsea, meanwhile, were unable to repeat the victory obtained in their opening game against Los Angeles FC but will be hopeful of securing a place in the knockout phase in their final group outing against Esperance of Tunisia. Advertisement The result follows Botafogo's stunning success against European champions Paris Saint-Germain on Thursday, stretching the unbeaten record for South American clubs at the competition to nine matches. Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca made four changes to his line-up following the win over LAFC in Atlanta, with new signing Liam Delap coming in for his first start up front. Delap had an early effort tipped over but it was Neto who gave Chelsea the lead in the 13th minute as he pounced on a slip by Wesley to run through and score a second goal in as many games at FIFA's new competition. - Jackson red card - Advertisement Flamengo applied plenty of pressure in the first half without really looking like scoring, but it was a different story after the break. They nearly drew level on 54 minutes when Gerson pounced on a mistake by Reece James and tried to pick his spot in the corner. His connection was poor, and the arriving Gonzalo Plata could not turn the ball in at the back post. The 34-year-old Bruno Henrique, capped twice by Brazil earlier in his career, then came on as the pendulum swung further towards Flamengo. Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez tipped over a shot by Plata just before the equaliser came on 62 minutes. Advertisement A Gerson cross was headed back across goal by Plata and Bruno Henrique was there to turn it in, sparking wild celebrations among the Brazilian fans clad in red and black at Lincoln Financial Field. Three minutes later Flamengo were ahead as a corner was headed down by Bruno Henrique and former Real Madrid, Manchester City and Juventus defender Danilo converted. Jackson then saw red for raking his studs into the shin of Ayrton Lucas leaving Chelsea to finish the game a man short. Enzo Fernandez was not far away from equalising, but then Flamengo wrapped up the win seven minutes from time as a Plata shot struck Wallace Yan and the ball fell kindly for the substitute to fire in. as/ea
