Al Khabourah, June 19
The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and thriving in Oman as the global innovation event 'Start-up Weekend' kicks off this weekend at Al Khabourah Vocational College. This internationally renowned competition, licensed by the US-based organisation Techstars, is held under the supervision of the Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (ASMED) for three days.
Yahya bin Ibrahim al Niyadi, Director of Al Khabourah Vocational College, emphasised the importance of the event, saying: 'Hosting Start-up Weekend reflects our commitment to fostering a culture of innovation among students. It's inspiring to see so many young talents working together to create solutions that could shape Oman's future economy. This can be a major step in the entrepreneurial and innovation fields to encourage our youth to show their ideas turning into real projects and meeting expertises.'
Start-up Weekend is no ordinary event, it's an intense, hands-on experience that gathers entrepreneurs, developers, designers and marketers under one roof to transform raw ideas into real start-up concepts.
The participants form teams, develop prototypes and pitch their final projects to a panel of expert judges and all within one weekend. With the theme of 'Innovate, Build, Launch', this year's edition in Oman features the participation of 70 students from leading educational institutions, including Sultan Qaboos University, the University of Technology and Applied Sciences, Nizwa University, the University of Buraimi, A'Sharqiyah University, Oman College of Health Sciences, and vocational colleges from Suhar, Shinas, Al Seeb, Sur and Al Khabourah.
The projects span across vital sectors such as technology, industry, healthcare, sustainability, agriculture, finance, sports and mobile applications, showcasing the depth and diversity of youth-driven innovation in Oman.
The competition will be in four phases: idea pitching, team formation, project development with expert mentorship and final presentations. It not only promotes a strong culture of entrepreneurship, but also builds lasting connections between students and real-world investors, developers and start-up coaches.
As the final day approaches, anticipation grows for the pitch session, where the most promising start-ups will be recognised – not just with prizes, but with the opportunity to move from prototype to product, from dream to enterprise.

Pact to explore sustainable methane pilot project in Oman

MUSCAT: Oman LNG has signed an agreement with Japan-based Kanadevia Corporation (formerly Hitachi Zosen Corp) to carry out a detailed feasibility study for establishing a pilot plant to produce sustainable methane. The initiative marks a significant step toward expanding clean energy technologies in the Sultanate of Oman. The agreement includes two major components: a technical and commercial evaluation of a future commercial plant and a preliminary engineering study for a smaller-scale pilot facility. The commercial facility is expected to produce up to 18,000 standard cubic metres of sustainable methane per hour, while the pilot plant will initially generate around 1,200 standard cubic metres per hour. The proposed pilot project will feature three core elements: a seawater desalination unit, an electrolyser system to produce hydrogen from water, and a methanation system that combines green hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide to synthesise methane. Technologies such as carbon capture and reuse (CCR) and advanced catalysis will be central to the process. The initial phase will involve the preparation of detailed design specifications, cost estimates, and planning for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) activities. Hamad bin Mohammed al Naamany, CEO of Oman LNG, said the project seeks to turn environmental challenges into industrial opportunities by reusing carbon dioxide emissions to produce methane. 'This project leverages cutting-edge carbon capture and reuse technologies and integrates them into LNG operations, aligning with our goals for sustainability and innovation,' he stated. This latest agreement builds upon a Memorandum of Understanding signed in March 2024 between the governments of Oman and Japan, which aims to foster collaboration in hydrogen, ammonia, and carbon recycling technologies. — ONA

Oman's tourism GDP to hit RO3.5bn in 2025

Muscat – Oman's travel and tourism sector is on course to generate RO3.5bn for the national economy in 2025, continuing a steady growth trend that has already pushed the industry beyond pre-pandemic levels, according to the latest data from World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). In 2024, the sector contributed around RO3.3bn to GDP – about 7.7% of the economy – and supported 212,700 jobs. Tourism's GDP share of 7.8% recorded in 2019 (pre-pandemic) is expected to rise to about 8.1% in 2025. Looking ahead, WTTC forecasts the sector's contribution will grow exponentially reaching RO5.2bn by 2035. Employment is also set to grow with total tourism jobs projected to reach 277,700 by 2035, creating around 53,000 new jobs over the next decade. Tourism-related taxes generated about US$669.4mn in 2023, accounting for roughly 1.2% of Oman's government revenue. Spending patterns show a balanced mix of domestic and international demand. Domestic travellers made up about 52% of total tourism spending in 2024, with international visitors contributing the remaining 48%. International tourists spent about RO1.5bn in 2024 which is forecast to reach RO1.6bn this year, slightly ahead of the amount forecast to be spent by domestic travellers (RO1.5bn). Of the total spent in 2024, 65.6% was on leisure trips and 34.4% on business travel. The UAE remains the top source market for inbound visitors (17%), followed by India (12%), the UK (8%), Germany (5%) and Bahrain (4%). The outlook remains strong with WTTC projecting tourism GDP to grow to RO5.2bn by 2035 at an average of 4.1% per year. International visitor spending is expected to rise by 5.2% per year to RO2.7bn by 2035, while domestic spending is projected to increase 1.9% annually, reaching RO1.8bn. WTTC analysts expect the sector's upward trend to continue driven by ongoing investments, promotional efforts and infrastructure improvements aimed at attracting more domestic and international tourists.
