2009 NFL re-draft shakes up history of the Houston Texans with selection of DB
The Houston Texans didn't with three picks in the 2009 draft.
Linebacker Brian Cushing became a Pro Bowler and all-time leader in tackles for Houston before retiring in 2017. Connor Barwin was one of the league's better No. 2 pass rushers for several seasons in both Houston and Philadelphia. And Glover Quin eventually transformed into a Pro Bowl and All-Pro defensive back when he left for Detroit.
If history could be revisited, how many players would land in Houston a second time? Overall, one.
In a recently published 2009 NFL re-draft, Pro Football Focus had two of Houston's picks that year going off the board in the first round. While both Cushing and Quin were on the board, PFF has the Texans going with Quinn because of his potential in coverage.
"While Brian Cushing was often the heart and soul of Houston's defense, the Texans instead select a player they originally drafted in the fourth round in Glover Quin. He made the Pro Bowl in 2014 after leading the league with seven interceptions. Quin earned an 88.0 PFF overall grade for his career."
Quin spent four seasons in Houston, totaling six interceptions and 47 pass deflections. Once he left for Detroit, everything changed. During his six seasons in the Motor City, he led the league in interceptions (seven) and ranked second in pass deflections (10) during 2014.
Quin retired after the 2018 season, totaling 24 interceptions and 84 pass deflections. Cushing, who was selected 20th overall in the re-draft, finished with 644 tackles, 30 pass breakups, eight interceptions and 13.5 sacks.

Developing Dart: Giants' Fate Hinges on One Trait

Developing Dart: Giants' Fate Hinges on One Trait originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The process of trading back into Round 1 for a franchise quarterback is a good one, but opinions were split when the New York Giants took Mississippi quarterback Jaxson Dart. Advertisement Coming from Lane Kiffin's offense, Dart had a sizable jump waiting for him in the NFL. Every offense was going to be a change of pace from the RPO-laden, play-action-heavy scheme he ran in the SEC. Nevertheless, New York wouldn't have taken Dart without believing in him, and head coach Brian Daboll is tasked with ensuring his development goes smoothly. The team has helped provide an encouraging environment for Dart, starting with two veteran quarterbacks. In signing Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, general manager Joe Schoen made sure that the rookie wouldn't start until he's ready. He also gave him over two decades of experience to learn from. The one trait key to the Giants developing Dart successfully is his aggressiveness, which he spoke about at minicamp. Advertisement 'I'm an aggressive player as is, so I think that's definitely something that I have to continue to learn,' Dart told reporters on Wednesday. 'I think this practice setting is a great time for me to do it. Then obviously you make mistakes, you do some really good things and you get to go back and watch the tape and pick up on the things that you need to improve on.' Offseason workouts give Dart the opportunity to see what he can get away with against NFL defenses, testing new windows against elite athletes. Dart has a gunslinger's mentality, and at times flashes the arm talent to warrant it. But he was more prone to turnover-worthy plays without the benefits of play-action passes. He took more sacks and was less efficient, too. He'll have to maintain the aggressiveness that makes him dangerous without committing the turnovers that threaten New York's offense. Advertisement 'I think you kind of have to be, that's the only way that you're going to get better as a quarterback,' Dart said. 'You can ask the best to ever do it, what was their biggest reason of how they're able to improve and develop. Making mistakes and being able to watch it, look back on it, and have a lot of humility in your mistakes. Being able to say I was wrong in this, or I was wrong in that and then being able to be proud of the good plays that you make as well.' Dart's intangibles made him a polarizing prospect, but those same traits are the easiest to misevaluate. If he can prove New York right and make good on his draft capital, that same aggressiveness is bound to create plenty of highlights. Why Giants Can Make Commanders-Like Leap in 2025

Why Giants Can Make Commanders-Like Leap in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Giants have the toughest schedule in football this season. That does not mean they are - as many critics think - doomed. Advertisement Few teams were able to improve their roster across the board this offseason like the Giants were able to do. They have a top young receiver in Malik Nabers, a good young running back in Tyrone Tracy, and a defense that looks far different than in recent years. As always, it comes down to the quarterback. Whether it is Russell Wilson or 25th overall pick Jaxson Dart who gets the starts, the Giants need to find a quarterback who can win games for the franchise. Head coach Brian Daboll understands that well. If he cannot improve off of New York's three wins last season, he may get fired after four years with the team. That is the situation right now. Win and save the jobs of people around the organization. Lose, and a lot of changes are coming. Advertisement There is reason for hope outside of just the roster, though. The Giants have to follow a similar blueprint to what their NFC East rival, Washington Commanders, ran for their rebuild last season. In 2024, the Commanders improved their win total by eight games and reached the conference title game. A big part of that was because they played a last-place schedule after winning just four games in 2023. Washington's opponent list last season was far easier than what the Giants have to deal with. Things change from year to year, though. The hard schedule that New York is set to face may not be so daunting by the end of it. They have a defense that can make life miserable for any offense in the league. Advertisement If the coaching staff can operate similarly to how the Commanders did last season, then the Giants could avoid 'doom' and make a Washington-like leap in 2025. Giants' Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston Having 'More Giggles' in New York

Giants' Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston Having 'More Giggles' in New York originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With all of the flack that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson has been getting over the last few seasons, playing football has most likely not been as fun for him as it used to be. Advertisement But now that he is with the New York Giants, it seems that things may have changed for Wilson. The 36-year-old field general recently spoke with the media, and he talked a bit about how fun his time in New York has already been with his new teammates. "Man, it's been a joy," Wilson said. "I think if I had to describe it, just the joy to be able to do what I love to do, number one – and number two, to do it with the people that you really want to be around... Just being here and the extra time that we've put in watching film, doing all the necessary things to be great. I think that's been the joy of it, man. That's why you love the game, the obsession of it all. That's the good part." Giants backup quarterback Jameis Winston recently gave the team a new motto of "more giggles, more laughter, more fun," and that seems to be the case so far for Wilson in the Big Apple. The Giants were dead last in the NFC East in 2024 with a 3-14 record, but Winston also said that this team does not have the look of that kind of team. Wilson finished this past season with 16 touchdowns on just five interceptions with the Pittsburgh Steelers, so he showed that he can still get the job done. Advertisement New York has only made the playoffs twice in the last 10 seasons, so Wilson and Winston will be looking to help lead the team back to the postseason.
