Police probe murder after learner is fatally stabbed outside Pretoria school
Boschkop police in the east of Pretoria are currently investigating the murder of a Grade 11 learner who was stabbed to death, allegedly by a Grade 12 learner outside a school in Lethabong, an informal settlement in Donkerhoek.
The incident happened on Tuesday outside of the Lesedi Secondary School, according to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk.
The Gauteng Education Department confirmed the incident, saying police were investigating the tragic incident.
According to Van Dyk, Boschkop police arrived at the school to find the deceased, who was still alive at that time, lying on the ground with a stab wound to his stomach. Preliminary investigations revealed that the incident happened outside the school premises at around 12:35 on Tuesday.
'It is alleged that the 19-year-old learner was on his way home with a friend when he was attacked and stabbed,' explained Van Dyk.
He said, after the victim was stabbed, he managed to run back to school for help, and an ambulance was contacted by the school's staff.
'The victim was later declared dead at Ubuntu Clinic at Lethabong, east of Pretoria,' he added. He said a case of murder was opened at Boschkop police for further investigations.
'No arrests have been made so far,' Van Dyk concluded.
Gauteng education MEC Matome Chiloane said preliminary reports suggested the Grade 12 learner had not attended school that day but allegedly arrived after the school day had ended.
'Just as learners were boarding their scholar transports, the Grade 12 learner proceeded to attack and stab the Grade 11 learner just outside the school yard.'
Chiloane said he was deeply saddened by this tragic incident.
'In response, the Gauteng Department of Education has dispatched a team of psychologists and our School Safety Unit to the school to provide trauma counselling to affected learners and educators, while strengthening safety interventions at the school. No child should ever lose their life in the pursuit of education. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and the school community during this incredibly painful time,' Chiloane said.

Mooiplaats home invasion ends in fatal shooting
A home invasion in Mooiplaats, East of Pretoria, on Friday, June 20, culminated in a shooting between security guards and suspects. According to police spokesperson Johan van Dyk, the events began when a resident heard his dogs barking outside and went to investigate at around 21:30. 'The man was approached by five adult African men armed with pangas,' Van Dyk stated. The men then attacked the victim. Van Dyk confirmed that police are investigating a case of house robbery, murder, possession of stolen property, and possession of house break-in tools. More than R13m worth of counterfeit goods seized near Clairwood THE Hawks members from the Durban Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit executed a search warrant at a Rossburgh container depot near Clairwood, leading to the confiscation of counterfeit goods valued at an estimated R13.8m. The police confiscated the goods recently during a sting operation. 'Brand attorneys subsequently confirmed that the inspected merchandise contained a broad array of counterfeit products bearing well-known brand names, including Adidas, Nike, Lacoste, Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Puma, Batman, Superman, Samsung, Steve Madden and Colgate. 'No arrest has been made at this stage, but the investigation continues,' said Ncane. The KZN Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation provincial head, Major General Lesetja Senona, praised the members for the good work. 'The discovery and confiscation of these counterfeit items represent a significant step forward in the fight against intellectual property infringement and the proliferation of counterfeit goods in KwaZulu-Natal,' he added. Pretoria's Operation Shanela: 297 arrested in major crime crackdown
Multi-disciplinary efforts involving police, other government departments, and community policing forums led to the arrest of nearly 300 individuals as part of ongoing initiatives to combat crime in Pretoria this weekend. A coalition of various crime-fighting organisations resulted in the apprehension of 297 suspects for a range of offences, including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, bribery, and rape, according to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk. Captain van Dyk stated that Saturday's Operation Shanela specifically targeted the Hercules and Pretoria West policing precincts. 'A roadblock with two tactical teams was deployed across the Hercules and Pretoria West areas, resulting in the detention of 33 undocumented foreign nationals, who are currently being processed by immigration authorities,' he explained. During the operation, 544 individuals and 291 vehicles were searched, leading to 14 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol. 'Targeted patrols were conducted at 41 identified crime hotspots, resulting in further arrests and the issuance of fines. This included one person arrested for public drinking, interfering with police duties, and resisting arrest, as well as one suspect found in possession of three zip-lock bags containing crystal meth,' van Dyk added. Traffic enforcement units issued 19 AARTO infringement notices, totalling R13,500 in fines. Liquor compliance inspections were carried out at 12 establishments, resulting in the closure of seven for non-compliance. A total of 272,310 ml of alcohol and 17 cartons of illegal cigarettes were confiscated. The breakdown of other arrests included: – Gender-based violence-related offences: 1 – Murder: 1 – Attempted murder: 1 – Armed robbery: 4 – Kidnapping: 6 – Bribery: 2 – Rape: 8 The operation involved collaboration among various authorities, including SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, the Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, the Department of Correctional Services, the Department of Community Safety, and representatives from local Community Policing Forums. SAPS District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine, expressed gratitude to all participating stakeholders for their ongoing cooperation and commitment to enhancing community safety. He emphasised that such disruptive crime-combatting operations will continue across Tshwane to maintain and restore law and order.
