Iskandar Confirms BAM Approach For Coaching Role

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Bernama) -- Ireland badminton team's singles head coach Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin has confirmed that he has been approached by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to join their ranks.
However, the former Malaysian men's singles player could not confirm the position offered to him by the national governing body.
'Someone (from BAM) did contact me, but let's see how things go. I still have a contract (with Ireland) until 2028.

'I need to consider what my goals are. Nhat Nguyen (Ireland's men's singles shuttler) is still young. I also need to discuss with my family, as they are all in Ireland, and I have to see what's best,' he said when met at the Malaysia Masters 2025 at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, yesterday.
Iskandar, 33, said he is determined to prove himself as a coach, especially after raising Nguyen's level of play to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Iskandar, who has been coaching in Ireland since 2022, also hopes to produce players capable of winning medals at future European Badminton Championships.
If he serves out his contract, he wants to help Ireland break the European badminton dominance long held by Denmark, England and France.
'We've also started a junior programme, with players training in the morning and evening. I hope with this development programme, we can go further,' he said.

'For me, it was a good start when we played against Cape Verde. I was there at the stadium and I saw a high-quality level of football and this had some impact when we played against Vietnam,' he said. Although Harimau Malaya lost the second match against Cape Verde behind closed doors, Zainal believes the lessons learned were crucial, as evidenced by their dominant win against Vietnam in the World Cup Qualifier at Bukit Jalil just days later. 'So with more matches like these, because I have lived through those eras where I played against the best teams. Liek Hou battles through pain for two Asian Para badminton titles

KUALA LUMPUR: Cheah Liek Hou bagged a brilliant double at the Asian Para Championships once again but not without a major scare in the men's singles final against long-time rival Dheva Anrimusthi in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Sunday. Liek Hou, a two-time Paralympic champion, held his nerve to edge the Indonesian 21-19, 15-21, 21-19 in a tense SU5 final, surviving a late fightback that saw Dheva save four match points before the Malaysian finally sealed it. Despite struggling with a right heel injury, Liek Hou later returned to the court to partner Fareez Anuar and clinch the men's doubles title with a 21-14, 21-18 win over India's Hardik Makkar-Ruthick Ragupathi. It marked his 10th career title at the Asian Championships — a quadrennial event last held in 2016 and cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. "I picked up the heel injury last year and have been getting treatment since, but I haven't stopped competing," said Liek Hou. "It gets painful after tough tournaments like this, but I'm coping well.
